7 Instructions for the Family Tree Outline The family tree outline is really more of an output format. However, everyone likes something different. So I decided to try this format for input. It can be useful. Always start with the Date, Created by, and the other info outlined in the red boxes at the top of the page. Let s start with how to fill in the information on the people. The first 3 people already have the Person No. filled in because they have to exist to fill in this chart. Anyone after Person No. 3 is optional so as you fill in those people, give them a number. The wife of Person No. 3 is Person No. 4. Their first child is Person No. 5 and so on. Person No. ; Name / ; Sex M / F; ; + Person No. ; Name / ; son / daughter of After the Person No. enter Name. At the end of the blank for Name is a /. The blank after the / is for the source number of where you found the Name. For instance say I found Person No. 5 in the obituary for Jackson Smith. Jackson Smith is Person No. 3. So I might make Source 5 the obituary. Then I would put Michael Smith in as Person No. 5 (the son of Jackson Smith). Finally I would put a 5 after the / so that I know Source 5 provided that information. Okay, so now you find the rest of the information for Person No. 5, Michael Smith. After every / you put the number of the source for the information. Then you enter his wife, Sally Jones, as Person No. 6. You circle the word daughter since she is female. The next set of blanks is for the names of her parents. Her father is Samuel Jones and her mother is Christina Jones. Christina s maiden name is Doe. Doe goes in the parenthesis. It would look like this daughter of Samuel & Christina (Doe) Jones / X. The X would be for the source where you found Christina s parents names. The rest of the information is about Christina. The example Person No. 5; Name _Michael Smith /_5_; Sex M / F; Born _1 Jan 1922 /_8 in Somewhere, County, OK_/ 8 ; Died _3 Mar 1980_/_10_ in _Anywhere, County, NE / 10_; Married _6 Dec 1940_/_6 in _Uptown, Coco, WY /_6 ; + Person No. _6_; Name _Sally Jones / 15 ; son / daughter of _Samuel & _Christina (_Doe_) _Jones_/ 15 ; Born _8 Oct 1922 /_16 in _Nowhere, County, IA /_16 ; Died _2 Nov 1985_/_17_ in _Another Place, Another County, OR /_17_ Then you would go on to Jackson Smith s next child and so on.
