He married Anna Maria (Mary) Schwartz 26 Sep 1859 in Schroeppel, Oswego County, New York, daughter of Fred Schwartz and Mary. She was born 09 Jan 1839 in Germany, and died 15 Aug 1908 in Wausau, Marathon County, Wisconsin. Notes for Jacob Adam Kiehl: Jacob's death certificate indicates he was born in Rhinefalls, Germany. Rhinefalls is a misspelling (or the English representation) of Rheinpfalz, also called Pfalz, an area that is part of what is now the territory of Rheinland-Pfalz (a couple of territories west of Bavaria). Rheinpfalz (or Pfalz) was owned for a time by the Kingdom of Bavaria prior to German unification in Jacob's death certificate indicated he was born on the 22nd of February, while his birth record indicated the 21st. While living in Fond Du Lac County, Wisconsin, he petitioned for citizenship in 1869, stating that he was a native of Bavaria (Rheinpfalz, Germany) and had arrived at the Port of New York in January of He indicated that he hadn't filed a declaration of intent for citizenship (usually a first step in applying for citizenship) because he was 17 years old when he arrived. His age supposedly shouldn't have precluded him from declaring first; it's possible he and/or the clerk were confused. Several sources conflict as to the date when he came to the U.S. In his citizenship petition, he said he arrived at the Port of New York in January According to the 1900 Census, he immigrated to the U.S. in 1854, his obituary says he immigrated in 1855, and an Athens, Wisconsin Centennial book says he came in 1853 (which also erroneously said he was born in Heidleburg, Germany). At this point, I have been unable to find the passenger list for Jacob and/or his brother John that shows when they came over from Germany. After coming to America, Jacob settled in Syracuse, N.Y., where he worked at day labor. Jacob's pension file indicated both Schroeppel and Phoenix in New York for Jacob and Maria's location of marriage. Jacob said Phoenix in response to some questions asked by the Bureau of Pensions in 1898, while a witness to the marriage ceremony indicated Schroeppel in an affidavit he answered in 1904 as part of Jacob's request for a pension. Mary also testified in an affidavit in 1904 (for Jacob's pension) that she and Jacob were Jul 2008

11 married in Schroeppel. Also, in response to the Bureau's questions, Jacob indicated he and Mary were married by a minister by the name of David L(?) Ridemiler(? Riceminder maybe). The questionaire and Jacob's answers are in his pension file. The minister also wrote a note in 1904 (also in the pension file), swearing to the marriage. He indicated that Jacob and Mary were both from Schroeppel at the time of the marriage, but he didn't say where it took place, only when. Jacob enlisted in the Civil War, serving as a Private in New York's 21st Independent Battery of Light Artillery, commanded by a Capt. Barnes. He enrolled in the war August 22, 1862 and was honorably discharged at Syracuse, New York, September 9, Shortly after being mustered out, he moved his family to Fond Du Lac County, Wisconsin, where he engaged in farming. Sometime around 1880, he purchased a farm in the town of Holton (which was spelled Holeton until about 1895), Marathon County, Wisconsin, where he lived with his family until his death. While living in Holton, Jacob served as a member of the county board for about 12 years at different times and was also a member of the soldiers' relief commission. He was Town Chairman at some point in time. According to a profile on Jacob, pioneers coming to Black Creek Falls (in or near Athens, WI) would take the train to Dorchester where Jacob would meet them and take them to Black Creek Falls. Travelers would often spend their first night in the Kiehl Home before going on to the new settlement. He applied for an invalid pension in 1890, saying he was unable to earn a living as a result of Chronic Rheumatism and Piles (hemorrhoids), which he claimed were a result of exposure and hard service in the war. He said the Rheumatism resulted from him falling into the Mississippi River in April of 1863 and that the piles were caused by chronic diarrhea while on the march. Jacob's claim was approved under the Congressional Act of June 27, 1890, and he was awarded a pension of $12 per month. Jacob died at home of cancer of the throat. According to his obituary, he had been ill for about a year and confined to his home since the Christmas before his death. According to a Holton Centennial book, Jacob, Mary, and two children were buried on the home farm plot, and in about 1912, these remains were removed and reburied in a Dorchester Cemetery. [According to an unconfirmed story I've seen, Jacob's son Lawrence sold the 160 acre family farm, minus a small area reserved for cemetery purposes, in The Kiehl property bordered on the District of Bruckerville, and the family cemetery was across the road from the Bruckerville school. The state had to move the bodies when the road was widened in 1919.] Further research found that they are buried in the Dorchester Memorial Cemetery in Dorchester, Wisconsin. A headstone for Jacob was supplied by the Veteran's Administration, which only indicates Mary as "wife" and doesn't seem to acknowledge the 2 children; they may be buried elsewhere or in the same plot and unlisted. According to his pension file, Jacob was 5ft, 5in tall and had light hair and blue eyes. Strangely, Jacob and his family (not all the kids though) are listed in both Fond Du Lac County and Marathon County for the 1880 Federal Census for Wisconsin. According to the 1900 Federal Census, Mary immigrated to the U.S. in 1854 and was naturalized; however, her obituaries stated that she came to America in Mary had 11 children, 9 of whom survived to adulthood. At the time of Jacob's death in 1904, all 9 were still alive; at the time of Mary's death in 1908, 8 of the children were still living. Mary was listed as widowed in the 1905 Wisconsin state census under her son Lawrence Sr's entry. At the time of her own death, she was living with her daughter and son-in-law Mary K. and William Gehrke in Wausau, apparently since the time her husband Jacob had died in Mary never remarried after Jacob's death. Mary died of cancer of the face, though her Wausau obituary says it was cancer of the neck. Mary is buried with her husband in Dorchester Memorial Cemetery in Dorchester, Wisconsin. A headstone for Jacob was supplied by the Veteran's Administration, which only indicated Mary as "wife". Her father listed her as Emma when he listed his children in response to a Bureau of Pensions questionaire in 1898 (the questionaire became part of his pension file). Emily was listed as a schoolteacher for the Draper School (Holton, Marathon County, Wisconsin) in 1886 in a Holton Centennial Book (the name was spelled "Emilie"). Emily was listed living with her sister and brother-in-law Mary and William Gehrke in Wausau, Wisconsin at the time of the 1900 Census. Her husband was not included on the list but Emily's status was 'married'. According to her parents' obituaries, Emily was living with her husband in Whatcom, Washington State at the time of her father's death in 1904 and in San Francisco, California at the time of her mother's death in Father's Obituary, Wisconsin River Pilot (Wisconsin), March 29, 1904, page 4 Mother's Obituaries, Wisconsin River Pilot, August 18, 1908, page 1 and Wausau Daily Record Herald (Wisconsin), August 15, 1908, page 2 Federal Censuses for Wisconsin - Fond Du Lac County (1880), Marathon County (1880, 1900) Father's Civil War Pension File, National Archives Holton Centennial Book (Marathon County, Wisconsin) Notes for Charles H. Paulina Kiehl, born Abt in Wisconsin; died Bef She married Donahue; died Unknown. Notes for Paulina Kiehl: Pauline was listed as a schoolteacher for the Draper School (Holton, Marathon County, Wisconsin) in 1892 in a Holton Centennial Book. She appeared to be married to someone named W.M. Donohoo (or Denohoo, possibly Donahue) and living in Chicago, Illinois in 1904, according to her father's obituary. She was not listed among the living children in her mother's obituaries in In fact, her father's obituary specifically states 9 children were living at the time (in 1904) and her mother's obituaries state 8 children were still living in Holton Centennial Book (Marathon County, Wisconsin) Father's Obituary, Wisconsin River Pilot (Wisconsin), March 29, 1904, page 4 Mother's obituaries, Wisconsin River Pilot, August 18, 1908, page 1 and Wausau Daily Record Herald (Wisconsin), August 15, 1908, page 2 Federal Censuses for Wisconsin - Fond Du Lac County (1880), Marathon County (1880) Father's Civil War Pension File, National Archives Notes for Donahue: It's not certain at this time if the name is Donahoo, Denohoo, or Donahue. Father-in-law's obituary, Wisconsin River Pilot (Wisconsin), March 29, 1904, page xi. Jacob S. Kiehl, born Abt in Wisconsin; died Unknown. 37. Johann Georg (John George) 8 Kiehl (Johannes 7, Johann Georg 6, Johann Christian 5, Johann Adam 4, Johann Jacob 3, Johann 2, Christian 1 ) was born 05 Feb 1848 in Morbach, Rheinpfalz, Germany, and died 18 Mar 1914 in Spokane, Washington State. He married Mary Rosina Wagner 02 Jun 1872 in Fond Du Lac County, Wisconsin. She was born 20 May 1852 in Fond Du Lac County, Wisconsin, and died Unknown in Glendive, Montana. Notes for Johann Georg (John George) Kiehl: John's given name was Johann Georg on his baptism record and he appeared to americanize it to John George. According to John's great-grandson Robert Kiehl, a now-deceased relative told him that John and his brother (name unknown) lived in Germany (location unknown) with their father, who was a schoolteacher and very stern. The brothers left Germany together to get away from their father (nothing was known about the mother) and settled in the Schenectady (sp?) NY area before going to Wisconsin. Robert believed that John and Jacob were brothers based on the above information, plus the fact that the two men lived in the same area in Fond Du Lac Wisconsin at the same time and that Jacob was a witness at John's wedding as noted on the marriage certificate. He contacted me through after finding my genealogy website and we Jul 2008

15 began comparing notes. We were then able to find the birth/christening records for John and Jacob and their siblings. Given the information collected so far, it's pretty much a foregone conclusion that the two were brothers. It's not clear yet what year the brothers immigrated, or even if they came over separately or together. Various sources on brother Jacob list various years and the 1900 Federal Census for John says he immigrated in For some reason unknown to Robert, John and Mary separated, though it didn't seem to have anything to do with them not getting along (he believes it may have been for economic reasons). John was listed living alone in the 1900 Census. John eventually ended up in Spokane, Washington. When Mary learned that John had died, she made the arrangements to bring his body back to Montana. Robert thought that when John and Mary separated, Emma went with her father and Nellie stayed in Montana with Mary. John's baptism record and his entry in the 1900 Federal Census lists his year of birth as 1848, while Bob's information had it as He was christened on Feb 18, John is buried in Glendive, Montana. Some information on John's family supplied by his great-grandson Robert Kiehl (descended through his son Jacob) Baptism record, Evangelische Kirsche Niederkirchen (Rheinpfalz [Germany]), Kirchenbuch (church book) , Taufen (baptisms) , FHL film# Marriage certificate (transcription), Fond Du Lac County, Wisconsin (data supplied by Robert Kiehl) Federal Censuses for Minnesota - Chippewa County (1880) Federal Censuses for Montana - Yellowstone County (1900) Notes for Mary Rosina Wagner: Federal Censuses for Minnesota - Chippewa County (1880) Federal Censuses for Montana - Dawson County (1900) Children of Johann Kiehl and Mary Wagner are: + 51 i. She married Frank M. Kelley; died Unknown. Notes for Nellie Amelia Kiehl: says Nellie was born in Minnesota, while the 1900 Census says she was born in Wisconsin. Federal Censuses for Minnesota - Chippewa County (1880) Federal Censuses for Montana - Dawson County (1900) Generation No Elizabeth 9 Kiehl (Jacob Adam 8, Johannes 7, Johann Georg 6, Johann Christian 5, Johann Adam 4, Johann Jacob 3, Johann 2, Christian 1 ) was born 28 Aug 1859 in New York, and died 29 Jul 1926 in Fresno, Fresno County, Jul 2008

16 California. She married Emil Kutter 01 Jun 1884 in Brucker, Marathon County, Wisconsin, son of August Kutter and Charlotte Etusk. He was born 31 Aug 1860 in Germany, and died 02 May 1944 in Dinuba, Tulare County, California. Notes for Elizabeth Kiehl: I'm not entirely clear whether Elizabeth or her brother Charles is the oldest child, although I'm leaning towards Elizabeth. For Charles, I've seen references to 1858 (including his death certificate), 1859, and 1860 (including an Athens, Wisconsin Centennial book); for Elizabeth, her tombstone says she was born in 1858, conflicting with other records which say The censuses where they are listed together seem to indicate that Elizabeth is older, but ages on census records aren't always accurate. However, Charles was not listed on the 1860 Census for New York but Elizabeth was, implying that he hadn't been born yet (or his birth had missed the census deadline for being listed). Elizabeth's name on her marriage certificate was Elisabetha For some odd reason, her father did not include her when he listed his children in response to a Bureau of Pensions questionaire in 1898 (which is part of his pension file). Cause of death: Diabetes. She is buried in Washington Colony Cemetery in Fresno, California Marriage certificate, Marathon County, Wisconsin Obituary, Fresno Bee (California), July 31, 1926, Page 9 Death certificate, Fresno County, California Washington Colony Cemetery records, Fresno, California Federal Censuses for New York - Oswego County (1860) Federal Censuses for Wisconsin - Fond Du Lac County (1870, 1880), Marathon County (1880, 1900) Federal Censuses for California - Fresno County (1910, 1920) Father's Civil War Pension File, National Archives Mother's obituaries, Wisconsin River Pilot (Wisconsin), August 18, 1908, page 1, and Wausau Daily Record Herald (Wisconsin), Aug 15, 1908, p2 Father's obituary, Wisconsin River Pilot, March 29, 1904, page 4 Notes for Emil Kutter: According to his death certificate, Emil came to the U.S. about 1877; the 1900 and 1920 Federal Censuses say he came in The 1820 Census indicates he was naturalized in According to the index "Germans to America, ", it appears Emil came to the U.S from Germany on Nov 24, 1876 at age 16 with his parents August (age 50) and Charlotte (age 47) ; the ship's name was "Neckar" and the captain's name was Willigarod. Other Kutter names on the same voyage: Henriette, age 26; Louise, age 14; Maria, age 8, Oskar, age 7; and Threodore (could have been a misprint), age 9. Further research is required to confirm this information. Emil had been a farmer/rancher and was retired at the time of his death. Emil and his wife and kids were listed as living next door to wife Elizabeth's parents in Holton, Wisconsin in the 1900 Census. According to his obituary and his death certificate, Emil and his family came to California in He operated a ranch in the Easton District from 1901 to 1918 and then moved to Fresno, where he lived until At some point after 1928, he moved to Dinuba, California (his wife Elizabeth had died in 1926). Emil died in a Dinuba hospital of Myocardial Decomposition due to old age. He was living with his daughter Mattie and her husband in Dinuba at the time of his death. Emil is buried in the Washington Colony Cemetery in Fresno, California. Notes for Ottillie Kutter: I'm unsure about the month and year of birth listed for Ottillie on the 1900 Census, as the information was very hard to read. I was able to read her age (18 years) though, so the year is close. According to her mother's obituary in 1926, Ottillie and her husband were living in Fresno, California. Kutter: I'm not entirely sure about this name from the 1900 Census, as the census listed this person as a daughter and the name is a little hard to make out clearly; the sex is kind of hard to make out, but it looks to be "M" (for male), based on comparison with other entries. I'm not completely sure about Jacob's month and year of birth from the 1900 Census, as it was hard to make out, but I was able to make out that he was 10.
