1 August 19, :24:52 AM PDT Charles, No I don't have a copy of that book written by Levi Hilligoss in Some guy here loaned it to me so I could get the information and copy the pictures I wanted to. I don't believe you can purchase a copy I have looked but no luck. How do you come down from Margaret Hilligoss and Ira Curry Steele?? Take me on down to you and your wife. I can share what I have with you if you want. No I don't have back farther then Hans Peter Hillegas & Anna Regina Triegels. Where do you live? I live in Anderson Indiana. What is your last name?? My was Haygood, I was married once to Davis then div. and now rem. for 10 yrs Sept. 1 to Martin. We are celebrating by going fishing!! We were going to go to Vegas but remodeling the bathroom came first so we think we may go next spring. Fishing is fine with me. I grew up hunting and fishing so that's alright with me to do that. I have a handwritten letter by some woman named Lillian Hilligoss who said in the letter she was the last one in Rush Co. bec. her brother died like two weeks or so ago I forget I'd have to go through it again. Anyway, it says the letter was written in 1901 but that can't be true bec. it mentions my grandma Dorothy (d/o Samuel M. Hilligoss & Cynthia Gates) and she wasn't born until So I am wondering if the woman who wrote it accidentally wrote 1901 instead of 1910???? I don't know and I have never been able to find out who she was. I sure would like to know who she was. I will have to go over to Rushville and see if I can find anything out about her. Either she never married or she signed this letter under her maiden name. Let me know your line the rest of the way down to you. Keep in touch! Ira Curry Steele, but actually Margaret was their grandaughter through Silas Hilligoss & Elizabeth Smiley then Margaret who mar. Ira Steele.

2 We are 5th cousins, we share Jacob Hilligoss & Barbary Gilbert as 4th gr grandparents. Like I said, I don't think that Lillian Hilligoss wrote that letter in 1901 like it states. She either transposed her numbers or something. I'd have to go see the real one, but I think it's just a copy like the one I have. But I know it wasn't written in 1901 bec. like I said my grandma is mentioned in there. If you have a copy you will see where Isaac Hilligoss' son Samuel McCircle is mentioned and then his son Robert mar. Leora Harless and had so on including my grandma Dorothy. I say Lillian wrote her letter after Levi wrote out his info bec. the next child born in my grandma's family was Elsie in 1912 and she died at birth. The next child was b and she was not mentioned in that letter written by Lillian. That leads me to believe she wrote it in 1912 or after but bef or else she didn't know abt. the next child in my grandma's family. That could be so bec. they moved to Madison Co and all the children were born here. I only have one Lillian Hilligoss in my file and she was b. in Iowa in The only other one was b and one b (which we know doesn't fit). Anyway, neither one of the one's mentioned would fit this woman. If she was going to be 90 or 91, she would have had to be born in 1811 or so if she wrote the letter in 1901 (which I say she didn't bec. of my grandma's birthdate) or she would have been b or so if she wrote the letter in 1912 or so. Hans Peter Hillegas b. 10/1649 d. 10/12/1719 (Germany for both birth came from book Our Hugenot Ancestors Generation I to IV) married Anna Regina Triegels b d. 9/7/1708 (Germany for both) mar. in Germany abt I don't have any sources for Anna. And we know they DID NOT COME TO AMERICA!! They had 6 sons: I. Johann Fredrick Hillegas b. 11/24/1865 Germany (Records 1st Reformed Church of Lancaster PA & Hilligoss History by Levi Hilligoss & Huguenot Ancestors gen. I to IV) d. 1/6/1765 PA (Hilligoss History & Huguenot book)

3 Emigration 1724 on Ship William & Sarah from Rotterdam to America (Hilligoss History) married on 8/23/1712 Eppingen Reformed Church in Baden Germany (no source) to Elizabeth Barbara Triegels b. 10/24/1694 Germany (no source) d. 3/4/1759 PA (Hilligoss History) They had 10 children you'll see on list! II. Georg Peter Hillegas b. 11/17/1689 (Records 1st Reformed Church Lancaster Co PA) d PA (Hilligoss History) Emigrated 1724 (poss on same ship as Johann Fredrick but Hilligoss History & Huguenot Ancestors doesn't state name of ship at least I didn't put it down if it did!!) mar. Anna Margaretha UNKNOWN before 1715 in Germany. They had 9 children. III. John Jacob Hillegas b. 1/12/1693 Germany (Hilligoss History & Huguenot Ancestors) d. UNKNOWN TO ME and I don't have an emigration time for him) married abt Germany (year questionable). I have only one child for them GEORGE ALBRECHT HILLEGAS b. 9/5/1723 Germany (Rec. 1st Ref. Church PA & Huguenot Ancestors) d. 8/19/1814 KY Emigrated uncertain as my source was History of Rush Co. Indiana and it states George Hillegas & wife Lizzie Clavel emigrated to America shortly bef. the Revolutionary War. Now didn't the rev. war go from ?? If so shortly bef. is hardly 29 years (if he came over in 1746!!! That's 29 yrs bef. the war??) Of course I may be wrong on the date of the war but the paper in front of me which has all the wars on it states The American Revolution so on and so on!! So I am guessing George Albrecht came to America sometime bef but close to it!! Again I and the History of Rush Co. IN could be wrong!! I have some other George Hillegas/Hilligoss' but none would fit this description as far as coming over in 1746 or !! George Albrecht Hillegas supposedly mar. 1st to Catherine Reichart abt in Germany and had 3 children all b. Germany the third being b. in 1752, if this is true then he wasn't the one who came over in 1746 unless he went back and came back again!! And since the History of Rush Co IN (if it's correct) states that George and his wife Lizzie Clavel (they called Elizabeth Hester Clavel "Lizzie") came over to America shortly bef. the Rev. War, the they mar. in Germany also. Now George and Lizzie Clavel had 7 kids: One being Jacob that mar. Barbary Shetterly!!! And I assume since they just came over shortly bef. the War that the first 3 children: William b ; Elizabeth b and Jacob b. 3/15/1770 were born in Germany. The first child b. in PA must have been John W. b (give or take) and the rest of the children. Now I am thinking from what you said and now that I look at the time the war was on. That the George Albrecht Hillegas who was Drum Major under Geo. Washington was actually George Albrecht II (son of George Albrecht I and Catherine

4 Reichart!!) This George A. II was b Germany d/ 12/12/1806 Washington Co PA mar. to Elizabeth Young (I have no more info on them) This George would have been only 28 at the time of the war (1775) and his father Geo. Albrecht I would have been 52!! So this makes more sense. We would need to look into it further to prove it but I am changing mine to read that the Geo. II was the one who was in the Rev. War under Geo. Washington. But then again maybe George A. I was in the war at age 52 we may never know for sure. Maybe that's why he was a drum major?? Wonder how we can figure out which George Albrecht it was George the 1st or 2nd?? OK so I won't finish with the children of Hans Peter Hillegas & Anna Regina Triegels bec. I only wanted to tell you about John Jacob Hillegas b being father of George Albrecht Hillegas I and so on. I will send you complete file on Hillegas for what I have to date. I haven't worked on it for quite some time. Only to add bits and pieces as I come across or someone sends me. It will be almost 300 pgs. so be prepared. It might take you a while to go through it. Don't take everything to heart as we are all prone to mistakes. I want someday to go back over stuff and make sure I have all sources correct, but that may be a long way off!! The file is forthcoming and as long as you have ADOBE it should come out ok. If I were you I wouldn't waste ink printing it out, I would just put it on a disc or make a new Family Tree File out of it and bring it up when you want to look at it (as long as you have enough memory on your computer!) We also have a zerox copy of the handwritten document by Lillian. Amazing recollection for a women of age 91 or so. It turns out that Levi plagiarized from her; entire sections of the book are word for word copies of Lillian's document. Of course the book has all the great pictures. On the other hand if Lillian wrote the document after 1912, then maybe she copied from Levi. Anyway, I do not find Lillian in the book, so I

5 do not know where she fits in. On a web page somewhere, I remember seeing that the original of her document is at the library or court house in Rush County. My complete line from Jacob is: Jacob Hilligoss and Barbara Gilbert (picture in book) daughter Margaret (picture in book) married Ira Curry Steele son Silas Hilligoss Steele, married (sorry I don't have this with me here) son Ira Silas, married (sorry I don't have this with me here) son Edwin Silas Steele, married Lora Ruth Walker son (me) Charles Richard Steele (born 1933), married (2cd too) Marie-Louise Buehler (35 years ago) four sons 3 granddaughters (and 5 grandchildren from daughters in law with previous marriages) Since by brother does not have children, it appears that this Steele male line will disappear. But there are now more than enough children in the world. Amazing how one can get hooked into the genealogy. When we were in Germany, we got together with two of my wife's cousins, who had extensive family records. So I was able to enter all that into my Reunion program. I also have most of the Hilligoss book information in the program as well. But we still have tons of old photos and records that I want to get into the program. Great to get acquainted with you.
