Spreadsheets for Autosomal DNA Presentation to Family History Center 5/7/2016 Conference 5 May 2018 by Jim Bartlett jim4bartletts@verizon.net
Agenda Audience Survey 1. Managing atdna data 2. Downloading data 3. Additional data 4. Master Spreadsheet 5. Updating 6. Using a Spreadsheet 7. Chromosome Mapping! Summary jim4bartletts@verizon.net
Quick Audience Survey How many of you have. [show of hands] taken an autosomal DNA (atdna) test? struggled with all the DNA data? used an Excel spreadsheet?
DISCLAIMERS 1. Unexpected Results can come from DNA testing. [see also: ] 2. My opinions are my very own, - I am not representing any company. I am a volunteer (unpaid) Administrator with FTDNA; and I am a volunteer (unpaid) helper/advisor at GEDmatch. I ve tested at all three companies. jim4bartletts@verizon.net
Managing Data 1 You Have to Manage Your Data With Colonial Ancestry, you will get data: (cm threshold) - FTDNA: over 4,000 Matches (7.9cM+) - 23andMe: 2,000 Matches invite them to share - AncestryDNA: over 50,000 Matches (6cM+) - MyHeritage: over 7,000 Matches (8cM+) - GEDmatch: 20,000+ Matches, s, segment data With Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry: many more than above jim4bartletts@verizon.net
Managing Data 2 Select a Method to Manage Data: 1. Use your pages at testing companies - Each has way to keep notes by Match 2. Paper 8.5x11 or 4x6 notecards - A ream of paper is 500 sheets. 3. Third Party programs: DNAGedcom, DNAMatch, GEDmatch, GemoneMatePro, ADSA, etc - See: 4. Spreadsheet this presentation!! 5. Relational Database pretty complex jim4bartletts@verizon.net
Managing Data 3 Main Purposes: 1. Inventory of stuff [Matches; Segments; etc.] 2. Find various data [Control-F] 3. Various Sorts [always sort whole file] - by Match names or s - by Company - by Chr & Start (for Triangulation) - by side (after TGs established) 4. Track - Communications both send and receive - Keep up-to-date with new Matches jim4bartletts@verizon.net
Managing Data 4 Broad Considerations: 1. Match List w/ POC, , ID, nickname, company, GEDmatch#, match date 2. Segment Data Chr, Start, End, cm, SNP 3. Common Ancestor(s), Ahnentafel, cousinship 4. Links: Trees, messages, Profiles, 5. Communication: to and from 6. Triangulation: matching segments => TG ID 7. Close relatives matching 8. Notes/Remarks 9. Other. jim4bartletts@verizon.net
Downloading Data Main Issues: FTDNA: offers.cvs download files* 23andMe: offers.cvs download files MyHeritage: offers.cvs download files* * Match data & segment data are separate; must combine, sort and merge files; use 3 rd party AncestryDNA: no segment data - use DNAGedcom to download Match data GEDmatch: copy report and paste to spreadsheet - Tier 1 Segment Match has Match & segment jim4bartletts@verizon.net
Download: General Download Match data and Segment data files Combine into one spreadsheet -tedius process; experiment with 3 rd party tools If you use one company use that spreadsheet! If you use multiple companies and/or GEDmatch: -Decide on a header row -Rearrange download spreadsheets per header -Combine: Add them together to make Master Hack make a Match row for each segment Hack pick a segment threshold - Beginners use 20cM at first; 15cM later NEXT: Screen Shots jim4bartletts@verizon.net
Download: FTDNA Download Matches from Matches page Download Segments fm Chromosome Browser Sort and delete segments under 7cM Rearrange columns Combine and sort spreadsheets Merge data (drag segments to Match line) If multiple segments: - Make copies of Match lines - Copy segment data to Match lines NEXT: Screen Shots jim4bartletts@verizon.net

Additional Data Items you may want to add (NB: you have to enter this data) Kin Alternate Name Segment/TG ID# Cousinship Tree URL Send Reply Notes/Remarks Side MRCA Qual Other Close relatives who Triangulate used at Ancestry, GEDmatch, etc to group Matches & Chromosome Mapping based on Common Ancestors (e.g. 3C1R for 3rd cousin once removed) for links to web Trees and sites to track communications you send to track communications you receive for whatever you want M and P (or Ahnentafel 2 and 3); for grouping, sorting for Common Ancestor (I use surnames) Quality factor (e.g. 1 if you are possitive, 2 pretty sure, 5 for guess) Various items you may want to track or sort on jim4bartletts@verizon.net
Master Spreadsheet Combine all data into one spreadsheet: 1. Make a backup of your Master OFTEN 2. Align all columns with your Master 3. Combine all spreadsheets into one - Tip: Do all maneuvering in a scratch spreadsheet - Copy all rows to Master when all is good 4. Sort entire Master by Chr & Start - This groups all segments for Triangulation jim4bartletts@verizon.net
Master Spreadsheet Tips & Tricks: 1. Add one column for Company Initials - I use FF for FTDNA, 23 = 23andMe, AD = Ancestry, MH = MyHeritage and Gm for GEDmatch - You may want to look at each Company separately 2. Add one column for your initials - Keep your data identified separate from others 3. If there is no date, add one (today s) date - You may want know latest Match added 4. Divide Start/End values by 1,000, Mbp is much easier to read than bp - It s just as accurate for genealogy and triangulation jim4bartletts@verizon.net

Spreadsheet Updates Three options: 1. Download all data - arrange columns & append to spreadsheet - delete duplicates 2. Download only new data - arrange columns & append to spreadsheet - easy at FTDNA with dates 3. Type in new data - I do this at GEDmatch and 23andMe - I like getting to know each new Match jim4bartletts@verizon.net
Using Spreadsheet Things to do with a spreadsheet 1. Sort on Chr & Start - This is my main usage analyzing overlapping segments - Grouping into Triangulated Groups (TGs) - Adjusting TG Start/End use summary/roll-up TG rows - individuals, or small groups, to determine CA 2. Sort on Names (first and/or last) - Eliminate duplicates; find families 3. Sort on s - Find family groups maybe cousins point to CA 4. Combine spreadsheets of close relatives - Analyze TG areas: who s in or out of a TG 5. Track MRCAs found and cousinships 6. Analysis - Statistics of TGs; by company; percent mapped - Chromosome Mapping of TGs jim4bartletts@verizon.net
Spreadsheet Insights 1. Triangulated Groups (TGs) are powerful tools -All ~full-segment Matches are from same Common Ancestor (CA) -Partial-TG-segment Matches usually from Ancestors of CA -Small segments (6-15 or 20cM) are probably 10-20th cousins. -Some larger segments may span two segments 2. A Triangulated segment is equivalent to phased data -Your and Matches segments should have the same SNPs 3. All your DNA (and TGs) came from one parent or the other -Mom or Dad they got that DNA from their parents, etc. 4. A few shared segments in a TG may be false (on the Match s side) -Your DNA is pretty solid in a TG with several Matches -Match s shared segment, below 15cM, may be false -If important, form a TG around the Match s segment 5. Spreadsheets and all 3 rd party tools => same analysis/results jim4bartletts@verizon.net
Chrosmosome Map Easy from a spreadsheet! 1. Follow directions carefully, and leave a tip for Kitty jim4bartletts@verizon.net
Mapping from Spreadsheet Chromosome Mapping now 98%
More Tips 1. Take a spreadsheet class, if you need to - On line or community college; from your kids 2. Always sort the whole spreadsheet -unless you are very careful 3. Make regular backups - I use: atdna jvb MASTER and save with a new date every few days 4. Correspond with your Matches - You can learn a little by lurking/viewing Trees - You can learn a lot through personal contact 5. Use your spreadsheet it s a great tool! jim4bartletts@verizon.net
More Tips 2 Shortcuts: Control-C = copy [highlighted area to clipboard] Control-V = paste [what s on clipboard] Control-X = cut [highlighted area; put on clipboard] Control-S = SAVE [do this often] Control-F = Find [search] locate name, Control-B = bold [highlighted area] Control-U = underline [highlighted area] Alt-ii; Control-V; enter = insert copied hyperlink jim4bartletts@verizon.net
Summary 1. You must manage your atdna data 2. Choose from several methods 3. Download initial data to spreadsheets 4. Combine into one Master 5. Use your Master spreadsheet 6. Keep it up-to-date 7. ~Everything can be in spreadsheet 8. Correspond with Matches!
Questions?
My atdna Results In the past seven years for me: -1800/FF; 2700/RF; 5,000/Gm; 50K/ADNA -Common Ancestors with over 650 Matches -range: 2 nd to 12 th cousins; 5 are 10 th -from me through over 250 ancestors -95 different surnames! -8/8 G-gpar; 14/16 2G-gpar; 24/32 -Helped several adoptees jim4bartletts@verizon.net
