R E M B E R I N G AL RIEL- C H A R T E R M E M B E R Al was one of Mt. Diablo Genealogical Society s earliest members and served as President, Treasurer and Board Member for many years. Al was an expert in French-Canadian research. Laura Sanchez, states My first memories of Al was his telling me about the volumes of French Canadian Genealogy in the Heritage Room at the Contra Costa Library in Pleasant Hill. The volumes of marriage records, which listed both bride and groom, enabled me to trace one line of my family back to the 1600 s in France. She also spoke of MDGS s Tradition of having a Christmas potluck in the meeting room of US Bank in Rossmoor Shopping Center in lieu of a regular December meeting. Part of that Tradition was Al s delicious baked beans in a crock pot (see page 2 for the recipe) along with the decorations provided by the Bedecarres. She said Al was a sweet man, always wanting to help and had stories he liked to tell the group! John Bedecarre says He was quite a talker and loved to recount stories of his WWII days aboard a destroyer in the thick of the Pacific battles. (You can read his interview at The Library of Congress>American Folklife Center>Veterans History Project at vhp/story/loc.natlib.afc / transcript?id=sr0001 He told of one incident when their ship opened fire on one of our own planes, fortunately they missed. Their Captain received a message from Admiral Halsey thanking them on their lousy shooting in this case. Al s destroyer flotilla received a commendation for a dash into Tokyo Bay just prior to Japan s surrender. (continued on page 2)

2 Page 2 (continued on page 1) We are thankful that Al was such a big part of making Mt. Diablo Genealogical Society so successful in the early days and that he was so enthusiastic about genealogy. We will miss you! From a past Digger in 2005 By Request AL RIEL S BEAN RECIPE Sauté 1 large diced onion in butter until soft. Brown 1 lb. hamburger Cook & crumble 1 lb. bacon Combine meat, bacon and onion with: 1 can drained lima beans 1 can drained garbanzo beans 2 cans drained kidney beans 1 large can B&M baked beans, drained 4 tbs. bacon drippings Cook in crock pot on low 4 to 5 hours. It may not be a low fat, low calorie dish, but it sure is a delicious cold weather casserole.

To present educational programs including meetings, seminars, lectures and publications to assist individuals in the study of genealogy and genealogical research.
