3 What is Venture? Venture will equip you with the skills and knowledge to start-up your own business, enter self-employment, freelance or innovate within an organisation; a valuable skill employers are looking for. It s not just for Business students. It s for all students who are developing knowledge or skills at University who are thinking about working for themselves. How does Venture work? Venture is here to inspire you and support you to be enterprising. It s a three level programme designed to help you at different stages of your journey. It s also purposely messy - there are no rules here. You are in control. You can come along to any event, in any order and you don t have to follow a certain process, or do one thing before you re allowed to do another. You can drop in at any stage and essentially it is a pick and mix programme. Lots of students and graduates get involved at all levels and combine them to create a bespoke programme of support according to what they need. Which sessions should I go to? 5 CREATE How Entrepreneurial Are you? 26th October 1-2pm, Careers Self- Employment Q&A 30th November 1-2pm, Careers Can you name three entrepreneurs? Why are they good at what they do? Entrepreneurial people tend to have things in common. We ll uncover these so you can see which traits you share with the Richard Bransons of this world. From there, you ll be much more self-aware of your own ability to be entrepreneurial. You ll leave with the motivation to explore this career path more fully and/or with some fantastic examples of times you ve been entrepreneurial for your CV. It s a skill top employers are looking for! What is it really like being your own boss? Why did you decide to work for yourself? How do you structure your day? What are the best bits? This is your chance to ask those who took the brave leap into self-employment your burning questions in this open, candid Q&A to explore the world of working for yourself and help you decide whether it is right for you. Self- Employment: Are you ready? 16th November 1-2pm, Careers Knowing what to do next: Setting goals and reaching them 14th December 1-2pm, Careers You apply for, and are offered, a job. If someone said Come in, and we ll tell you all the good bits and all the bad bits before you start you would probably think that is a pretty amazing opportunity. Then, you could weigh it all up and figure out whether you actually want to do it! You would certainly be more prepared. The good news is that we can tell you what selfemployment entails, the common barriers people face and the advantages and disadvantages. You can then decide whether this is something you would consider. If it s a yes, woohoo, you have an option! If it s a no, that s fine, lucky escape at least you know now! Come along and find out. When you re trying to build a business, freelance or work for yourself, you are in the driving seat. If you don t have a plan, or goals, you re drifting. Goals help you get to where you need to be and give you the motivation for getting there. So, how do you set goals? How do you make sure you reach them? Let us give you the practical tools for knowing what to do next.
6 CREATE Boost Confidence in Yourself and Your Business 18th January 1-2pm, Binks 106/1 How to Think Outside the Box 15th February 1-3pm, Careers When you re working for yourself, there are good days and there are bad days. Ask anyone who has just set up a business and they will testify that there are times when they feel like giving up. Often you re on your own, so it is really important to know how to deal with stress and change so you feel motivated and committed to taking your brilliant business forward rather than packing it all in. It all starts with confidence; in yourself and in your business and we can help you to develop ways to build this. This session is seriously good. Like, really good. It s your chance to come along and meet serial entrepreneur Paul McKie. Paul knows that in order to make your business succeed, you ll need to think outside the box and have good ideas. So, are you going to wait for light bulb moments? Or, are you going to take control and find out how you can be creative when you need to be? In this thought-provoking and interactive session, Paul gives you the tools to do just that. Managing Your Time and Being Productive 1st February 1-2pm, Careers It s Crunch Time! It s all about managing your time so you are being productive. Katy Carlisle was shortlisted for Freelancer of the Year 2016 and knows a thing or two about balancing demands. She ll share her tips and techniques so you can get stuff done. They say the average adult makes about 35,000 decisions a day. Being decisive is a skill, and even more so when you re running your own business or working for yourself. All those small or sometimes big decisions can have an impact on your business. So, how do you know you re making the right one? Enter, the Six Thinking Hats.
