3 1WELCOME WELCOME TO 127KGS If you re reading this, then you ve already taken the first step. Congratulations and welcome! Now, let s get down to business and start making the changes that will build a healthier, more awesome you. I m Shane, creator of 127kgs, and I know that losing weight and getting healthy can be difficult. BUT, once you get started and start forming some new habits, it s not nearly as hard as you think it s going to be. Trust me I ve been there. That s me in 2012 and that s also me, nearly 60kg lighter. I created this resource to help you avoid the mistakes I made and get you to your goals faster and more efficiently than I did.
4 2ALL THE WRONG REASONS MISTAKE NO. 1 When I first set out on my own mission to lose weight and get healthy, it was for all the wrong reasons. I knew it had to happen but I guess I just wasn t ready. My family kept reminding me what the doctors had told me and eventually they just started drawing up exercise and meal plans for me. It was more peer pressure than it was active decision. The result? A false start. I lost some weight and promptly put it all back on. ARE YOU TRULY READY TO MAKE A CHANGE? If the answer is hell yeah! Then you ve just jumped the biggest hurdle.
5 3GOING ALL IN MISTAKE NO. 2 I started with all guns blazing! I was going to drastically change my life and it was going to happen ASAP. I started running, I was eating salad twice a day, I was a new man! My new found transformation lasted a few weeks and then it all fell apart. I was hating it and I was exhausted. Turns out I (we) have a finite amount of willpower and there s a limit to the number of changes you can successfully make all at once. The Solution: I ve sinced learned that it takes about a month to form a new habit and every day it gets a little bit easier. Realising that you CAN form new habits is important. 127kgs is all about systematically forming new habits. Start with small things and build upon them. Try this: If you want to start exercising, try starting with a 5-10 minute walk every day. I cover this here: Losing Weight - Getting Started & Not Looking Back.
6 4THE ONE BIG GOAL MISTAKE NO. 3 After going all in hadn t worked, I figured it was time to set some goals. Actually just 1 goal. I had an ideal weight in mind and decided to write it down. This would be my target. 85kg. I had friends that were roughly my height and they weighed about 85kg, so it seemed like a good number. The PROBLEM with picking an ideal number is that you know bugger all about it. You don t what it ll take to get there, you don t know if it s the right number for you; depending on your body composition it might be an impossible target. Most of all- IT S TOO FAR AWAY! My ideal number meant I needed to lose 42kg, that s gonna take a long time! Progress and success keep you motivated, but when your target is in a distant land far, far away, nearly all progress seems insignificant. The Solution: Just pick smaller goals! Don t pick an end goal, just hit smaller targets regularly. Start with a goal of losing 2kg. Nail it, feel good about it and then aim for another 2kg. Nail that and then bump it up to 5kg.
7 5BECOMING A RUNNER MISTAKE NO. 4 Even after my previous experiences with running, I still thought it was a prerequisite for losing weight and looking good. The problem: There s a couple. Unless I m playing sport and in a competitive environment, I actually don t like running. If it s a scramble for the ball, or I m defending the line I will run my arse off and take you out in a heartbeat. But running round the block?! I hate that shit. The other problem? Obesity. When you re big time overweight, running is just painful. Your gut and moobs (man boobs) are bouncing around and feel like they re being sheared off with a butter knife. The solution: Walking. Start with just a few minutes and walk every day. Over the last two years I ve diversified my workouts a lot but walking is my constant. I started with just a few minutes from the bus to my front door and now I walk 8 kms to and from work everyday. Walking has played a huge part in my 60kg weight loss.
8 6DUD ADVICE MISTAKE NO. 5 I started to do some research. Most of the time the internet is your friend, but when it comes to weight loss there s some bad, bad people out there. Unfortunately most of them want to sell you something you absolutely don t need. I was schooling myself up on bullshit like; the fat-burning zone, minimum heart rate needed to lose weight, super foods, how bread is evil. You don t need any of this stuff! Just start with Eat Better, Do More. It really is as simple as that to get started. Follow the advice in this article: Harden Up! Stop Dieting and Lose Weight by Eating.
9 7PUNY MUSCLES MISTAKE NO. 6 I ignored strength training for waaaay too long. I thought I needed to get small before I started to build muscle. It was dumb and probably my only regret. Let s face it, life must be easier when you re strong! AND strength training burns fat and builds muscle! Actually the benefits are HUGE. Now I m not suggesting you hit the shopping channel and tick up a home gym on your credit card. The Solution: Get a barbell. A barbell with a couple of 5 and 10 kilogram weights is incredibly versatile. Squats, bicep curls and bench presses; these are just a few exercises that will help reshape your body. You don t want to get bulky? Get over it. It s a myth! You ll only lose inches and gradually get toned. Bodybuilding is something entirely different and it takes huge amounts of food, huge weights and a lot of supplements.
10 8GET STARTED. GOOD LUCK! GET STARTED TODAY At this point I ve given you the 6 biggest mistakes I made when I was trying to lose weight. If there s just one lesson you take away from this, it should be: GET STARTED TODAY!
