TRIO TRIBUNE Dear TRIO students, April 2018 This is always an exciting issue of the TRIO Tribune because we honor the graduates! We also get a peek at their plans post-graduation. Hard to believe that we are saying farewell and good luck to a group of students who, it seems, just entered Viterbo yesterday okay, a few yesterdays ago! For those of you moving forward but not yet graduating, please take a moment to gain energy and inspiration from the wonderful opportunities these graduates are making happen. Graduates, congratulations from all your advisors! We wish you life s best and ask that you keep in touch with us as your life plans emerge and grow. We are so very proud of each of you! Warm Viterbo wishes for all of life s best, Jane 1
SENIORS FINAL THOUGHTS Kelly Ahrens Psychology; Substance Abuse Counseling minor To participate in class discussions. Professors will more likely be able to help your understanding and will more likely be able to be a professional reference if they know you. The preparedness for employment and insight that I learned about world issues. Reputable employment What is one experience you recommend every student have while at VU- After Dark When you look back in 5 years, what will you remember most about your Friends that I made while in the dorms What benefits of being in the SSS/TRIO program have made a difference to Discounted tickets and support along the way Moving to North Dakota and starting a new job as an RN! Kayla Romatowski Nursing Adrian Salazar Criminal Justice; Spanish minor They will have a fair chance of passing their classes if they use their resources. Viterbo and the professors offer so much time and so many resources to help students pass their classes. Viterbo and the professors actually care about their students passing their classes and making sure they get all the help they need. I didn't grow up with a lot. What I realized was there were so many people giving me a helping hand when they knew nothing about me. I wouldn't be the person I am today or graduating if it wasn't for Viterbo's faculty. It kept me on track of my stuff. Having meetings helped me talk to faculty about what I was struggling with and fix those situations quickly. I plan on obtaining my masters degree. 2
Karly Gonnering Nursing; Art, Psychology minors What is one experience you recommend every student have while at Take advantage of every opportunity! Viterbo offers so many great things that will help you in your education, career, and life - one of the benefits of a small school. You worked hard to get to where you are and you are paying to be here, so take advantage of it! When you look back in 5 years, what will you remember most about your Viterbo has been like a second home to me. I have met so many amazing people that truly care about my dreams and aspirations. I am so passionate about being a nurse and so thankful to have had the opportunity to pursue my dream, and I have a lot of people to thank for that. I truly believe that I would not be where I am today if it weren't for the people I have met and the support that Viterbo has given me along the way. to The SSS/TRIO program helped me adjust to college in so many ways. The staff at the ARC have been absolutely amazing in helping me with accommodations, testing, tutoring, and additional resources and support that have contributed to my success over the last 6 years. I can finally say after 6 years that I will be graduating with my Bachelor of Science in Nursing. I look forward to working as a nurse because I cannot see myself doing anything else! I am hoping to work in the La Crosse area and continue to care for and help people in need. I am looking forward to traveling, continuing to learn, and trying new things. I am excited to see where my nursing career takes me. I recommend spending at least one year on campus. It helps you meet other people and learn how to live on your own! When you look back in 5 years, what will you remember most about your I will remember the close relationships I made with peers as well as professors, and the baristas at Einstein's! to It gave me a lot of resources for things on campus that I would otherwise pass up, such as plays and speakers. I am currently at a job I love, and I look forward to getting a job in the future when I'm more settled down and ready to stay at a job for an extended period of time! Clara Bass Nursing Hannah Reedy Dietetics The amazing friends I have made. Knowing that I always have an extra support system available to me if I need it. I have accepted a registered nurse position in Mayo - Rochester. 3
Fran Halama Marketing Get to know your professors. They are cool. The professors/advisors that helped me along the way. Having Jane Eddy as my advisor. Traveling, meeting new people. Tylor Fenstermacher Management & Leadership; Marketing minor Join a club The friends Traveling Susan Taddy Social Work; Gerontology minor Study abroad Practicum (social work field placement) Having an extra group for support and knowledge Finding a job in my discipline and traveling Jennifer Guzman Psychology Engage in school activities and clubs. All the professors who encouraged me to see my potential. Also the relationship that was genuine with professors. I plan to continue furthering my education here at Viterbo in the Masters program. 4
Brandi Shramek English; Biology minor I would recommend every student obtain at least one semester of internship experience. I've been an intern for four semesters, and it has helped me gain experience for a future career. time here? I'll remember the Viterbo community and its hospitality. I'll always be appreciative of the professors and staff who went above and beyond to make a difference in my life. By being in the SSS/TRIO program, it was reassuring to know that my SSS advisor was always looking out for me. I also appreciated the support of being able to get tickets to shows in the FAC. After graduation, I am excited to pursue my lifelong dream of travelling outside of the United States. Lauren Lammers Social Work; Gerontology, Family Studies minors Taking a class with Tom Thibodeau. I will remember most how Viterbo was my second home: all the new friendships built, advisors and professors that truly care about your success, and my personal and professional growth. Having another mentor on campus who cared about my success and knowing I am not alone in this new college experience. To find a job that both intrigues and challenges me in a profession I absolutely love! Taylor Crapp Nursing I think that every student should attend the end of the year celebration! I will remember how genuine and nice the people are at Viterbo! I thought it was awesome to have another person on campus who cared about my success here! I am excited to start a full time job as a registered nurse! 5
Kayla King Criminal Justice; Psychology minor I think every student at Viterbo should participate in at least one Service Saturday event. There is a lot to learn from volunteering and serving others. When I look back in 5 years, I will remember all the good times I had while being a part of the track and field team. One benefit I think really made a difference to me was being able to attend theatrical shows at Viterbo at no cost at all because sometimes I would not have money to buy a ticket, but SSS made it possible for me to attend. After graduating, I will be attending the police academy, and this bring me a huge step closer to being a law enforcement officer. I am really excited to pursue this goal. Danielle Ducklow Sports Management & Leadership; Accounting minor Attend Courtyard Carni!!! I will remember all of the friendships made and the laughs shared. I was greatly informed of all the resources available on campus and I built relationships with the Academic Resource Center staff. I am excited to pursue my Master's in Sport Management and hope to work within a collegiate athletic department someday! Elizabeth Boardman Elementary Education; Cross Categorical Special Education, Early Childhood Education minors Go on a campus ministry mission trip! When I look back in 5 years, I will remember the friends I made and the memories I made with them. to The SSS/TRIO program has given me a support system. I am excited to pursue a career in teaching! 6
Anne Peterson Nursing Join a club or organization, or just participate in campus events. It is great to meet your peers and get involved with what is going on around campus. time here? I will remember all the people I have met in my years at Viterbo. Everyone has such an awesome story to tell, and it's great to get to know people from various backgrounds. It is great to have someone checking in on you. If you're not one to seek help when you need it, SSS is great in that they will see how you're doing and whether there's anything they can do to help. I'll be working in my hometown, so I am thankful I will be learning to be a nurse while being close to my family and friends. I am also very excited to get married in October. Ammie Jergenson Theater; English Writing minor Enjoy all of the arts on campus! time here? The friendliness of all of the students and employees on campus. The free tickets have been so beneficial, and just knowing that I have more support from SSS has been so helpful. I plan to take a year off to work and write before going to graduate school for playwriting. Courtney Moskal Nursing; Gerontology, Ethics minors One experience I recommend that every student has at Viterbo is to attend a volunteer event. Whether it is a Service Saturday or fundraising for a club or local organization, I believe it helps develop character and reminds students that they can make a change in someone's life. In five years, I will look back at my time at Viterbo and remember all the relationships I made with my peers, professors, and advisors. I will remember all their words of encouragement that helped me excel in nursing school and pushed me to be my very best. I have used many benefits through the SSS/TRIO program. I have been able to get free tickets to the FAC. I have been refunded for student activities; one activity was a ski trip through VU After Dark. I have also been able to push myself as a leader through SSS by becoming a peer mentor. Lastly, having Melissa as another advisor has been a huge support for me throughout my four years at Viterbo. I am excited to move closer to home and start my career as a Registered Nurse! I also look forward to traveling, having more time to relax, and spending quality time with my family. 7
Nicole Mikshowsky Nursing; Spanish for the Professions minor I recommend that every student partake in opportunities to join a club or association. Being a part of something bigger and engaging at a higher level has great advantages, such as creating friendships, working towards a cause, and of course, resume building! When you look back in 5 years, what will you remember most about your When I look back in 5 years, I will remember the feel of the Viterbo campus. It is a smaller, beautiful campus that incorporates a lot of meaning. ALSO, my nursing trip to Haiti! to The support I've received from instructors and other staff members have definitely made a difference in my success as well as guidance to achieving all that was possible. Ask them for help! I am excited to move into the RN role from my current Nurse Intern position. I began on the Medical Specialties unit at Gundersen working with patients who were withdrawing from drugs/alcohol, chaptered, behavioral/ psych patients with medical needs and med-surg overflow. I then switched to the Cardiopulmonary unit, where I will be transitioning into the RN role after graduation. I've gotten to scrub in for various procedures and see/participate in all sorts of nursing related tasks. They offered me a RN job before my senior year. I highly recommend their internship program! Katie Austin Nursing; Spanish for Professions minor Studying abroad was one of the greatest experiences I ever had at Viterbo. I suggest the South Africa trip, but I may be a bit biased! :) When you look back in 5 years, what will you remember most about your I will remember the great relationships I made and, most importantly, how to be a compassionate contributor to our community. to I loved being a peer coach and helping others adjust to the drastic change of college. I also really appreciated having a separate adviser with whom I felt comfortable discussing financial and academic issues. My husband and I are building a home, and I accepted a position at Mayo Clinic in Rochester! We are also taking a trip to Italy after graduation, which isn't a bad way to celebrate! 8
Megan Poulos Nursing I would recommend getting a tutor. They are great mentors and really help you understand the material! How holistic Viterbo is. Not only do the faculty focus on our education, they also care about us as students. to I have benefitted from the free tickets to the Fine Arts programs. It is such a blessing to be able to enjoy the shows at no cost! I am looking forward to seeing and traveling the world! With my nursing degree, it allows me to go all over, and I am excited to see where it takes me. Erica Trost Psychology Utilizing the ARC for testing and their various other resources When you look back in 5 years, what will you remember most about your The passion and general energy that Viterbo has towards their students and their students success to The extra guidance provided Masters in Social Work Karlie Schneider Nursing; Psychology minor Mariah Johnson Biopsychology; Chemistry minor Madeline Harvey Nursing Quincy Quiring Nursing; Psychology minor Nicole Sebastian Nursing 9
