3 1 INTRODUCTION This is my work placement report. I was working for Shoptilt Ltd from 12 th of May 2014 to 15 th of August Altogether I worked for 500 hours which gives me 20 credits. 2 INFORMATION OF THE COMPANY Shoptilt Ltd. is an e-commerce specialist company established in I was working with their three online stores: Blippo, PolarPanda and KawaiiBox. Blippo and KawaiiBox are related to Japanese popculture and PolarPanda sells small electronics and gadgets. The company operates in Hong Kong but all the stores ship worldwide. 3 OBJECTIVES OF MY WORK PLACEMENT I was working as a marketing and communications intern for the period of three months. My tasks included daily customer support via , updating and creating content for social media such as Facebook, Tumblr, Instagram and Twitter and writing product descriptions to the online stores. I was also communicating with the company s marketing partners, doing marketing research, competitor evaluations and reacting to customer reviews online. I also had attended a local expo/fair for new product ideas. 4 LEARNING OUTCOMES Before going to Hong Kong I really didn t know what to expect. I knew what my tasks would be but what surprised me was how much I actually learned during my time in Hong Kong. Working for Shoptilt allowed me to work right next to the CEO of the company and see through all the operations that are required while running an online store. Even though I wasn t working in the warehouse, I learned a lot about how ERP systems and the stock keeping works. Working closely with social media taught me how to optimize Google results and how to involve the customers and create awareness of the company and how important it is to keep up a good profile for an online store. Working with bloggers taught me how much of exposure you can actually collect just by sending a few cheap products to a blogger. While I was working with Shoptilt, they had just recently released a new subscription service called KawaiiBox. It was really interesting to see the service start from a scratch and how the customers found it and we started to get more and more orders. 1

4 5 REFLECTION Although I was scared before going to Hong Kong, I must say that it was one of the best decisions of my life. Not only did I gain a lot of important knowledge and competence from Shoptilt, but I also got a chance to see how the whole international business scene in a huge metropolitan like Hong Kong looks like. Meeting new people who were all working in different branches taught me how different methods companies use. I value the knowledge I gained from my new contacts who are not only my friends but also people who I m sure going to work with one day. Before this work placement I really thought I could never be an entrepreneur but these three months really opened my eyes and gave me an idea of my future. I m definitely interested in being an entrepreneur. After working in such a close contact with social media and especially bloggers who influence thousands of people, I was also inspired to try running my own blog and it worked I have managed to create a successful blog in less than two months. What also surprised me was how much I learned about myself as a person after moving to a whole new country without knowing anyone in advance. I gained more confidence and learned to appreciate myself and that working hard really pays off. I loved working in Hong Kong and I was left with so much more than just a job certificate: Friends for life, new competences, important work experience and the best thing so far an idea of what I want to do once I graduate. 2
