1 Coach-In-Training Version INNER ALIGNMENT Visual Map & Step-by-Step Directions Merkley Map The SHIFT-IT Visual Coaching Process Produced by: SHIFT-IT Coach, Inc. 2 THE SHIFT-IT VISUAL COACHING PROCESS This Merkley Map is part of a larger Visual Coaching process called SHIFT-IT. SHIFT-IT is a seven-stage process to assist individuals in doing their own personal visioning and planning work. There are 17 visual templates in the process (called Merkley Maps ). These tools can be used in order, or separately to supplement other coaching or personal development work. The Inner Alignment exercise falls into: Trouble at the Border. 1. At the Crossroads 2-5. 3 PURPOSE OF MAP: To Gather Baseline Data On Your Current Self And Situation (Before Engaging In Personal Visioning And Planning Work). To Uncover Resistance To Your Personal Vision. To More Fully Understand The Roots Of Your Resistance. To Negotiate A New Role For Your Resistance That Is In Alignment With Your Vision. To Create Inner Alignment (Remove Internal Barriers To Vision). DESCRIPTION: The Inner Alignment Exercise is another tool designed to help you deal with your Trouble at the Border issues the things that are in the way of you and the Vision you want to manifest for yourself. The trick after creating a Personal Vision is to be able to allow it. To be able to fully believe it is possible and possible for you. Sometimes there are glitches in being able to believe. Different people have different glitches in different areas. One way to access and re-align those glitches is to investigate your sub-personalities --- those different parts of you that are somehow resistant to the Vision you have created for yourself. There Is No Such Thing As No In This Vibrational Universe. Everything Is Yes! So When You Look At Something Wanted And Shout Yes At It, You Are Including Something Wanted In Your Vibration. But When You Look At Something Not Wanted, And You Shout, No, You Are Including Something Not Wanted In Your Vibration. And That, Right There, Is The Basis Of All Resistance. Looking At Unwanted Things And Saying No, No, No, I Want Not That; Is The Very Thing That Holds You In Vibrational Discord With That Which You Do Want. Abraham Hicks 3

4 What are Sub-Personalities? People are complex beings. We have many different parts to us. Parts that are creative. Parts that are analytical. Parts that are wise. Immature. Smart. Doubtful. Skeptical. Spontaneous. Trusting. Wary. And so on. These parts are created as we grow and develop and are shaped by what happens to us and how we interpret (or apply meaning) to those events. There is nothing weird or abnormal about sub-personalities --- we aren t talking about split personality or other kinds of personality disorders popularized by books like Sybil, etc. Or the amazing things that the human mind can do to protect itself from trauma and abuse. We are merely talking about varying aspects of ourselves and our overall personality. Aspects that come and go depending on what we encounter. How Sub-Personalities Can Impact Your Vision: When you create a Vision for yourself, you are claiming or calling out what you really, really want. In the process of creating a Vision it is very normal to stimulate different reactions within yourself. You will most likely have many pleasurable reactions that feel good: excitement, enthusiasm, desire, etc. And, you will most likely have at least a few uncomfortable reactions that feel bad: doubt, fear, skepticism, guilt, etc. The pleasurable reactions will aid you in reaching your Vision. The uncomfortable reactions will block or at least slow you in reaching your Vision. One way of getting into and playing with and shifting the uncomfortable reactions to your Vision is to do sub-personality work --- to identify which sub-personalities are creating your uncomfortable reactions and why. To do this we personalize or personify your reactions --- we literally imagine that these reactions are indeed separate little people or characters within us. Once we ve got a reaction personified, we can interact with it just like it was an individual. We can talk to it, ask it questions, gain information, educate and update it --- and, with enough authentic appreciation and understanding we can shift its energy. Shift it from being a block or obstacle to your Vision to being a support and being in service of your Vision. Aligning your inner resources for outer success. 4

6 OVERVIEW OF MAP: Angel: Part of you that wants your goal and believes it is possible. Devil: Part of you that doesn t want your goal; it is resisting it. Summary/Statement: Main objection to goal. Theme: Personify this part of you that objects... ask/find out its name (sub-personality). Skills/Abilities: List of the things that this sub-personality does well. Update: Negotiate a new role for this sub-personality. Goal: Specific vision component or goal you are having trouble believing in (allowing). Purpose: Find out how this subpersonality is actually trying to help / serve you. Name Change: Determine if this sub-personality wants a new name to go with its new role? Reactions: List of objections/negative reactions to your goal. Thank and Educate: Thank your sub-personality (sincerely) for its service and educate it about your new vision. 6

7 STEP BY STEP DIRECTIONS: STEP 1: GATHER MATERIALS AND CREATE A QUIET SPACE: BEFORE YOU BEGIN SET ASIDE 30 MINUTES Find or create a quiet, peaceful place for yourself where you aren t likely to be interrupted. Minimize distractions as much as possible (phones off, away from the door, etc). Set aside at least 30 minutes to complete this exercise. ASSEMBLE MATERIALS You ll need your Inner Alignment Map, this worksheet, and a pen. If you have completed your Magnetism Map (Personal Vision) have it within easy access. USE PEN OR MARKER: Using pens or markers as opposed to pencils is recommended, as ink will last longer than pencil (you may want to preserve these maps for a while). 8 STEP 2: IDENTIFY GOAL OR ISSUE TO WORK WITH: Your first step is to determine what you want to use this Map on. You have two basic options: 1. If You Have Created A Magnetism Map: Use it on one of your Vision elements from your Magnetism Map that you were not able to fully allow (one where you circled the X when asked if you can fully allow/believe it). Examples: I Have Doubled My Income I Have a Compatible and Loving Partner I Am in Excellent Physical Health / Have Reached Goal Weight 2. If You Haven t Created A Magnetism Map: Use it on a goal or on something specific that you desire that you are having problems manifesting or believing you can have. On something that you want that you are having a tough time creating or getting in your life. Examples: Home Ownership A New Vehicle Increasing Clients By Certain Amount Having A Certain Kind Of Relationship Weighing A Certain Amount Increasing Income To Certain Amount Moving To Certain Locale Fitness Or Exercise Goals Be sure to write your goal as something you are moving towards as opposed to something you are moving away from. For example, instead of leaving a certain field or profession (I want to leave law), focus instead on what your true goal is (I want to create a new career in the travel writing industry). When You Have Determined What Subject Area You Would Like To Focus This Map On, Write It In The Goal Circle On The Left Hand Side Of The Page. 8

9 STEP 3: MAKE CONTACT WITH RESISTING SUB-PERSONALITY: Now that you have identified the subject area (goal) you are focusing on, it is time to contact the most significant sub-personality connected with this goal (for more complicated goals, there may be lesser sub-personalities involved that may require you using the Map a second or third time to work with them). Our Conflicted Beliefs (Angel and Devil): We have conflicted beliefs about our goal. One side of us wants our goal and believes it s a good thing for us to have. And the other side of us doesn t want it and doesn t believe it is a good thing for us to have. A simple way to think of this conflict is an angel and a devil. We aren t so concerned with the angel, as its energy is working in support of our goal. We are most concerned with the devil, as its energy is working against our goal. It is currently acting as a stubborn barrier or obstacle. Please note: While it is easy and convenient to think of the these two sides as angel and devil, the devil side is really an angel too, just a bit in disguise. As you come to understand its perspective in more detail, you will see that it is trying to help and protect you in some way, it is just working off of old, outdated information. Listen to the Negative Reactions: To initiate contact with the sub-personality that is objecting to your goal first focus on the goal itself. Repeat your goal inside of your head a few times or actually say it out loud. Listen and watch for a negative reaction. This negative reaction may show up in a number of ways. Negative Talk: You may begin to hear some negative talk. Something that counters your goal perhaps it is saying something like yeah right, or how are you going to do that or as if you can have that. If so, begin to write down what you are hearing in the reactions section of the template. As the talk slows, ask it what else it thinks and listen for a response. Continue to ask what else? until you have filled the reactions space and feel free to spill onto another sheet of paper if you need to. Note: It is fine if you feel a bit self-conscious at this point and are wondering if you are making it all up. At one level you are, so go with it. You can t do it wrong. Whatever you come up with is right for you. So just go with what emerges and just write it down. 9

10 Body Sensations: If you don t hear negative talk or a voice in your head, you may instead feel some sort of body sensation or reaction when you repeat your goal. For example, you might feel a bit queasy in your stomach, or notice a cringe in your shoulders, or feel something somewhere else in your body. This is a signal or clue to you about where your sub-personality lives. It lives in that place in your body that you are having a reaction. To make contact with your sub-personality, imagine that this place in your body where you are having discomfort has a mouth and can talk. Or imagine that a little person or character lives there and can talk to you. If you are having a queasy stomach, then focus on your stomach and ask it to speak about the reaction it is having to your goal. Ask it why it objects. What does it find objectionable? What are its reactions? Write These Reactions In Reactions Section Of The Template. Again, Feel Free To Spill Onto Another Sheet Of Paper If You Need To. The Important Thing Is To Collect The Initial Negative Reactions To Your Goal. Summarize the Main Theme: When you have gathered a list of the initial reactions to the goal, create an overall statement that summarizes the main point or theme that this sub-personality is making. Or the reaction they made which has the most impact on you, or the one which feels the most powerful. Write This Summary Statement In The Big Quote Bubble On The Map. Some Examples: Goal: Quote: I Have Doubled My Income You ll Have To Work Too Hard Goal: Quote: I Have A Compatible And Loving Partner Relationships Are Awful, I Like Being Alone Goal: Quote: I Am In Excellent Physical Health / Have Reached Goal Weight It s Too Hard; I m Not Doing It 10

11 Examples of Common Sub-Personalities: Money Sub-personalities: Loser/Poor One: I ve Never Had Any, I Always Lose It, We Are Poor Unworthy One: Who Am I To Have Money, I Don t Deserve It, I m Bad Spiritual Objector: Money is Bad, The Root of All Evil, Rich are Selfish Scared Kid: Rich People Are Mean, Owners Are Bad Relationship Sub-personalities: Mr./Ms. Picky: Nobody Measures Up, Can t Find Perfection, Beneath Me Hurt One / Victim: Relationships Suck, I Always Get Left, Love Hurts Mr./Ms Independence: Can t Count on Anyone, Better Alone, Don t Need Hopeless Romantic: Perfection, Will Solve Everything, Make Me Whole Health / Body Sub-personalities: Saboteur: Why Bother, Who Needs This, I Can Eat It, I Can Skip It Image Seeker: Be Perfect, Measure Up, Impossible Standards Slacker: I Can t, Too Hard, Too Tired, And Too Old Rebel: I Won t, Can t Make Me, Says Who, No, *!#! You! One Of The Principles Of Your Universe Is That Every Situation In Your Life Is Teaching You How To Love. You Cannot Leave Something Until You Love It. You Are Tied To Things You Don t Like. If You Hate Something, You Will Be Drawn To It Again And Again (Even Though The Person And Form May Have Change) Until You Love It. Once You Love It, You Are Free From It. Sanaya Roman 11

12 STEP 4: DETERMINE HOW SUB-PERSONALITY HAS ACTUALLY BEEN SERVING YOU: Somehow, your sub-personality has been serving you. Even though at first it may seem that it has been working against you and your wishes. Take a moment now to consider how this subpersonality may have actually been working on your side, working for you instead of against you although probably in a bit of a misguided way. How Has Your Sub-personality Been Trying To Help You? How Has Its Actions Been Trying To Serve You In Some Way? How Has It Somehow Been Trying To Protect You Or Keep You Safe? Perhaps it has been working off of old, outdated information. Perhaps it was created many years ago, back when you were in different situations than you are now. Back when you were younger. Take a moment to consider your sub-personality s purpose. Why Was This Sub-personality Created? What Is Its Overall Purpose? At Its Root, What Is Its Job Or Role In Your Life? If you are not able to figure out the answers on your own, ask your sub-personality the questions and listen for a response. It can probably tell you quite easily how it has been trying to help you and why. It knows what its role is and what its purpose in your life is. At least how they view it (and that is what is most important). Write Your Understanding Of What Your Subpersonality s Role Is And What It Is Trying To Do In Your Life In The Outdated Purpose & Intent Section Of The Template. 12

13 STEP 5: IDENTIFY NATURAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Your sub-personality has many natural skills and abilities --- skills and abilities that you want working for your goal instead of against it. Take a moment to identify your sub-personality s skills and abilities. What Are The Things That This Sub-personality Does Really Well? What Is It Good At? What Natural Skills Does It Have? In Order To Perform Its Current Role, What Abilities Does It Use? Examples Of Skills And Abilities: Watcher/Observer Good Listener Protector Judger Gets Angry Runs Away Analytical Rational Calm Hard Worker Fun Seeker Organized Good at Lists Strong Intuitive Good Student Obeys Rules Breaks Rules Be sure to ask your sub-personality what its opinion is: What Do You Feel Your Best Skills Are? What Are Your Talents? What Do You Like About Your Current Role? What Are You Best At? What Do You Most Like To Do? Write All Of Your Data About Your Sub-personality s Natural Skills And Abilities In The Valuable Skills And Abilities Section Of The Template. 13

14 STEP 6: AUTHENTICALLY THANK AND APPRECIATE: As you have learned, your sub-personality has been valiantly working to serve and protect you for perhaps many, many years. It has been toiling away without any appreciation or acknowledgement from you in fact, from its perspective, it has been very misunderstood and perhaps even maligned by you. You haven t fully understood what it is trying to do for you and why. Take a moment now to genuinely find some appreciation and gratitude for this part of you. Even though it may have been working off of old, outdated information it has valiantly been trying to serve you in its own misinformed (or maybe very informed) way. Authentically find a way to thank this sub-personality for the role it has been playing. Acknowledge what it has been doing for you and for how long. Imagine it in front of you and imagine thanking it --- perhaps giving it a handshake or a hug or an embrace. Imagine giving it a medal. Hosting a celebration for it. Putting its name in neon lights. Whatever authentically feels right for you. Imagine that happening. Your sub-personality is not stupid or dumb. It knows when you are being honest or authentic. You need to really authentically appreciate its role in your life and authentically thank it. Your sub-personality needs to feel your appreciation and gratitude. It needs to know that its service has not been in vain. You will know your sub-personality has heard and received your thanks when you feel a distinct shift or relaxation inside of you. Your stomach may relax. Your shoulders may come down. You will feel some sort of subtle positive difference that indicates a shift of some sort has occurred. We all like to be thanked and acknowledged for our efforts, your sub-personality is no different. Take A Moment To Authentically Thank And Acknowledge The Efforts Of Your Sub-personality Up Until The Present Time. 14

15 STEP 7: NEGOTIATE A NEW AND IMPROVED ALLIANCE: Now that you have authentically thanked your sub-personality for its efforts to date, you can begin to negotiate a new role for it --- a role that will work in concert with your goal. Start by explaining to your sub-personality that you value it and would like to figure out a way to work together on your goal. Your sub-personality may still be very resistant to your Goal, so you will need to do a better job of explaining why you want to accomplish it and how this goal will be of benefit. Educate Your Sub-Personality About Your Goal: For example, if you want more financial abundance, you might explain that abundance will allow you to do what you want and carry out meaningful things to you. That money is helpful, good and desirable. That your success helps many people while your failure helps no one. You might explain what you want to do with your money. How you are worthy of that. Why it is fine to do and want that. If you want a relationship or partnership, you might explain that having a partner will help you manifest certain aspects of yourself that you can t on your own. Or, that you are ready for a new or different kind of relationship than you have manifested in the past. That you are capable of it and are sure that you can manifest something that really works for you and for the other person. For health or body related aspects, you might share with your sub-personality that you are wanting fitness to improve your health and longevity, to be around to enjoy your children and to be part of their lives, or to manifest the real you that has been lying underneath years of neglect or non-care --- that you are serious about improving your health and looking after yourself. That you are committed to the work and discipline that will be involved and are prepared to pay that price. Whatever your goal is, take a moment to more fully explain it to your sub-personality. If you have completed a Magnetism Map, you might imagine yourself sharing your Map with your sub-personality and explaining why you have selected these things for yourself. Explaining how they will benefit you and why they are important to you. Be Gentle and Be Patient: You may need to go back and forth with your sub-personality for quite a while. Educating it about what you want and why. Listening to its objections. Correcting its faulty thinking. Bearing with its twisted logic and old ways of viewing things. What you resist persists. So be gentle and take your time. You can t make your sub-personality do anything it doesn t want to do. So to shift its energy you must find a win-win solution --- something that works for both of you. 15

16 Create a New Role and Purpose: Work with your sub-personality to create it a new role and purpose --- that is aligned with your goal. Think of ways it can use its skills in a new context. If it is a good observer, perhaps it can be on the look out for people and situations that support your goal. If it is strong and is good at standing up for itself, perhaps you can get its support in helping you stand up to critics or obstacles along your path. Take a moment to tell your sub-personality how important it is to you and how you want to find a way that the two of you can work together. Ask for its opinions and input: Now that you understand how my goal fits into my overall vision; How Can We Work Together On It? How Would You Like To Work With Me? What Things Would You Like To Be Responsible For? If You Were To Create A New Role For Yourself, What Would It Be? What Would Like Your Purpose To Be? Would You Like To Retire? Or Would You Like To Keep Working? Work with your sub-personality until you can negotiate an arrangement that works for both of you. When you have figured it out, write it in the Updated Role and Purpose section of your template. Determine If Your Sub-Personality Would Like a New Name: After going through this process with your sub-personality you may find that the original name you (or it) created, no longer seems appropriate. Ask your sub-personality if it would like its name to be changed. It is fine for it to keep its original name if it wants to but oftentimes a new name feels appropriate given the changes it has gone through. Would You Like To Change Your Name? What Name Would You Like To Be Called By Now? How Should I Refer To You If I Need To Get In Touch With You? If There Is A Name Change, Write It In The Name Change Section Of The Template. 16

17 STEP 8: CONCLUDE FOR NOW: You and your sub-personality have worked hard to establish an understanding and a new, more improved alliance. Ideally your sub-personality is now onboard and aligned with your goal and overall Vision and is operating as a help rather than a hindrance. Take a moment to thank your sub-personality for being willing to appear and share with you and for being willing to create a new alliance with you. Your sub-personality will be working with you now. It is a valuable part of you (always has been). While your negotiating work is complete, at least for now, you will always be able to access your sub-personality if you need to. By using its name, you will be able to easily contact it to check in with it, ask its advice, or to course correct if either of you feels the need. Your sub-personality is now a member of your Inner Team. It is working to support your goal and overall Vision. It is available to you at any time; all you need to do is call its name in order to interact with it again. Take a moment to thank your Sub-personality for its participation and allow it to return peacefully back to its place within you. Remind Yourself That The Part Of You That Feels The Fearful Feelings Is Only A Small Part Of Who You Are. Send Love As If To A Small, Frightened Child Once You Love And Release Your Fears, You Will Be Able To Move Forward And Claim The Abundance That Is Your Right Much More Rapidly. Sanaya Roman 17

This facilitator in her 60s worked with her resistance to charge as much as her male colleagues uncovering and negotiating with the part of herself that was uncomfortable in doing so. 19 NEXT STEPS: Previous Move: FLIP IT, FLIP IT GOOD: Trouble at the Border --- Discover what you really think about your Vision and your ability to manifest and receive. Extract your negative thoughts and beliefs so you can see what your vibrational set point naturally is and then flip it for the better. Get the Law of Attraction working for you. Shift your energy to a more positive place. Current Move: INNER ALIGNMENT: Trouble at the Border --- Identify and work with your internal resistance and self-sabotage the thoughts, attitudes and beliefs that inhibit and block manifestation of your Vision. Discover and work with sub-personalities that object to what you now want for yourself. Educate, persuade and negotiate new roles for these valuable inner aspects of yourself. Get them on your side, working with you instead of against you. Next Move: ARCHEOLOGY OF BELIEFS: Harvest Your History --- Take a look at your bigger, evolutionary picture. Understand the larger context of your family and cultural background. Identify influential beliefs that may be impacting your ability to manifest what you really, really want. 19

20 PRESERVE YOUR INSIGHTS: You have taken the time to do this deep and thoughtful work so be sure to preserve it for ongoing and future reference. Create a SHIFT-IT file folder or binder to collect and keep your notes and manuals. If you are working through the full SHIFT-IT process, each Merkley Map will become a page in your Visual Coaching report. Simply work through all 17 templates in order, then staple them together. For more lasting preservation, go to your local stationary or office supply store and have them bound together into a formal report (with a clear (transparent) front cover and a sturdy, cardstock, back cover). Or scan your maps into digital files that you can save and share. SHIFT-IT is an ongoing experience that you may wish to do again and again. Preserve your early experiences so you can compare with your later ones: witness your changes and progress and more clearly see the evolutionary flow of your life. 20
