2 The 6 Sources of Acting Career Information Unfortunately at times it can seem like some actors don't want to share with you what they have done to get an agent or to get noticed. It almost seems like many don't want to share that with you, because they are afraid that if they do and you apply what they say, that you might make it big before they do and that would really upset them. So, they just tell you as little as possible. There are different sources from which you can get the information you need to start your acting career. Source #1 You can get information from people on your same level. When I say "you", I'm really talking in general terms about anyone who wants to start an acting career, but who doesn't know how to do it. Often times, people who want to start out go and look for websites with forums with people on them who participate and who give advice, but who really don't know themselves what to do to start an acting career. They only know what they have heard works or what someone has told them and that they sometimes try themselves, but don t get anywhere and furthermore don t know why. Are these the people you really want to learn from? No. Source #2 You can also get information from people who have enjoyed some modest success as an actor such as finding an occasional audition or getting an occasional acting job, but who have not had that coveted breakthrough yet. In other words, maybe stillnot agent or they are not to the point yet where they have a lot of industry contacts and have a proven method of getting regular auditions that lead to regular acting work. In this group you could find a few people who are eager to share information and who are willing to tell you what worked for them. My experience is that there are a lot of people in this group who don't want to share "too much", for fear that you might make it before they do. You might find that for you it could be similar you might find a lot of people willing to share information. The question remains, are these the people you can really learn from to get a successful start to your acting career, when they themselves haven t yet done it? Probably not. 2

3 Source #3 Full- time working actors are sometimes willing to share information with you about what to do to get started. What's difficult in getting in contact with this group is that they are busy and are often trying to "smooz" with people, with whom they are starting to have contact so that they can take their careers to the next level. The smart ones usually spend more time with other working actors that they themselves can learn from. From my own personal experience, they will give you advice, but it can also be limited. One: because they might not feel that you have "put in the time, hard work and sacrifice" to be worthy of their advice and so they don't want to waste their time. Two: because of that, they don't want to tell you too much, because if you take that information and make something out of it and get lucky and "make it", they will be very bitter, because you haven t worked for it and paid your dues like they have. Three: because they would rather spend their time, doing something that will help them get to the next level and not talking too long to a new actor. Are these the kind of people you want to learn from? Yes, but will they be willing to spend the time to teach you or will they just give you tidbits of information here and there? Source #4 Getting advice from stars or really successful working actors or listening to their stories can be interesting and invigorating. Their stories can wow you at times! The problem with relying solely on this source of information is that you have to know how to interpret what they say into your reality. You also have to realized that if you listen to Denzel Washington or Al Pacino and what they say about starting an acting career, you also have to realize that it has been several decades since they have been brand new actors. Not that you can t learn from them. Don t get me wrong, but like I said, you have to know how to translate what they say into your own reality. Plus, it s tough getting in contact with stars, much less getting advice from them. Most of the time, when new or up- coming actors get in touch with someone like this, they use the contact in the wrong way. Instead of asking for advice, they try and make friends so that they can get introduced to someone else in the industry. Not that that is wrong, but often times the new actor doesn't have the experience or the credibility to be introduced to someone big in the industry. Are these the kind of people you want to get information from? Yes, but it s probably not a good idea to rely solely on their stories and then you need to interpret and translate. 3

4 Source #5 Someone who has a lot of knowledge and experience in the industry, who maybe writes a book and gives seminars on different aspects of starting an acting career could be one of the much better sources of information for starting an acting career. Once again, you will need to translate what they say, figure it out in most cases and then apply it. In addition, you will need to be able to make the distinction between a good book or seminar that will actually give you the information you need in the way you need to receive it, so that it makes the steps easy for you. Informational websites fall into this category as well. There are two potential problems with books, seminars and informational websites. One: My estimate is that 80% of the people who read books and take seminars don't apply what they've learned in the right way. They either don't apply it as it was meant to be applied possibly because they didn t understand it, or they don't apply it at all. The excitement and enthusiasm after a good seminar or after reading a good book can be exhilarating. The problem is that when you come down of that "high" and get back into daily life, you forget or don t have time and just don't apply what you've learned. Two: Many, many, many people who write books and who conduct seminars may have a great deal of knowledge, but they don't know how to package it to make the learning experience "effective". Anyone can get up in front of a group of people and talk and anyone can write a book. The challenge is to make it simple, easily understandable, digestible and set people up to take action right away. Most of the time after a seminar, you have so much information, but you don't know where to start. You get home and you have to figure it all out. That's one reason why most people don't apply what they've learned. They don't know how to put together an action plan for themselves that works and that will get them results! So, are books, seminars and websites a good source of information to help you start your acting career? Yes, but you first have to get the right source and then you have to be diligent and apply what you learned. 4

5 Source #6 The ultimate source! This is where you have a mentor to help you through the process and who has those five characteristics that I talked about in the videos on this page link: Characteristic number one: The mentor already HAS EXPERIENCED OR IS EXPERIENCING WHAT YOU ARE TRYING TO ACHIEVE. They may or may not still be active. They might have tried and lost interest or realized that it wasn t for them, but have a desire to help others. More importantly though, before they quit, they got results, which in this case means that they got auditions and acting work regularly at least for some period of time. They are still passionate about this particular area of business and about helping people. There could be different reasons why they might not still be active in the business. Characteristic number two: He/she HAS GREAT KNOWLEDGE of the area that you want to know more about! In other words, they have great and vast knowledge about the acting industry and what it takes to be able to start an acting career. Characteristic number three: Your mentor has the ABILITY to teach you, just like I talked about here above in Level 5. Characteristic number four: He/she HAS THE DESIRE AND THE TIME to do that for you, to take you under their wing so to speak and to teach you what you need to know about starting an acting career, however long it takes and to show you exactly how to do it step- by- step in a way that is easy for you to understand. Characteristic number five: Your mentor is SOMEONE YOU CAN TRUST to give you the best information possible or, if he/she doesn't have it, they will help you get it. How to find a mentor First of all, your guide to finding a mentor is those five points above. Those are the five things you look for when looking for your mentor. If they are missing one of those things, you could be at risk of not getting what you need or only getting it partially. For example if you find someone who is willing to help you, but who doesn t have the ability to teach and help you understand in a clear way what you need to do, then you are at risk of not achieving what you want. Another example could be finding someone who is intelligent and who is willing to teach you, but who hasn t actually started an acting career himself at any time in his 5

6 life and really doesn t know how. Maybe what he is really willing to do is to help you figure it out. That s not what you want. Where can you find a good mentor? Acting schools: other actors, acting teachers and staff members of acting schools Casting directors: it s rare, but there are some casting directors who now coach for a fee Agents: who have coaching and mentoring businesses Industry professionals: former actors, agents, personal managers, casting directors, directors, producers, etc. Career mentoring programs: some acting schools and universities have business courses for actors in their curriculum Acting career coaches: usually they are part of the groups above A good mentoring program for you should be able to help you get the following results and more. Go from: finding that occasional casting website that calls you in for an audition once ever six months trying to find someone to introduce you to a casting director asking someone to introduce you to their agent and hoping for the best not knowing the steps you need to take to start your acting career to to to to getting auditions regularly! actually getting casting directors to call you in for auditions by bypassing completely your agent learning a proven method that will actually get agents to call you in for an interview, which then can lead to getting representation. not only knowing everything you need to do to start your acting career, but more importantly, BEING SHOWN EXACTLY HOW TO DO IT! 6

7 So what are your chances for success in getting information from the different sources we discussed? The diagram below shows how each source of information is directly related to the level of success that you can expect to have from it. As you can see, relying on information you get from people who are in your same boat and who don t know how to start an acting career themselves is virtually worthless and will only have you wasting time. By the same token, the most reliable and best source of information for you to help you start your acting career is that of getting a mentor with those five characteristics we talked about here above. 7

8 My personal experience with two websites I built A few years ago, as you may know I built ActingCareerStartUp.com. It is a website that has literally hundreds of pages of information about just about any aspect you can imagine that has to do with starting an acting career. The information is free and what I have found is that most people come to the site looking for specific information, get it in the form of an article, video or whatever and then leave. Many of those people ask me questions. I can tell by the questions they ask me that they are looking for a quick fix. They also tell me the things they have been trying to start their acting careers, but that aren t working for them and so they ask me for help. After answering more than some four thousand questions over the last few years (That s true!), I came to a conclusion. In spite of the fact that I built a website to help people start their acting careers, it wasn t helping them as I had envisioned. Most people I discovered weren t able to take that information and really do with it what needed to be done so that they could start getting acting work. Yes, there are success stories of people who have taken my information and gotten results, gotten an agent, more auditions and acting work, but most of the people who come to that site don t get those kinds of results. Not because the information isn t good quality information, but because they still didn t know the steps.
