6 CHAPTER 1 HOW TO STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD It s so easy to get lost in the crowd of millions of people on LinkedIn. So the question then becomes, How does one stand out on LinkedIn so that you become the #1 recognized individual within your field? Truthfully, it s not that hard. I m speaking from experience my own and my clients! Let me tell you how I ve been able to use LinkedIn in my business and how it has been able to serve me so you can get a better understanding of why I m so passionate about this platform. I ve spent several years in Corporate America working as a Corporate Recruiter for Top Fort 500 companies helping their companies gain outstanding excellence, from there I ended up working for companies on Wall Street bringing FORT 500 companies to their largest IPO of the year! 6 P a g e

7 After serving so many years in Corporate America I decided to go into business for myself in order to better serve the marketplace in a broader way. I had already earned international awards and recognition for my work, but I no longer wanted to be under a glass ceiling, and be subjected to someone else s rules of instruction. I wanted to build my business to the beat of my own drum and help people in a more meaningful way. So I knew that I needed to reach a larger population of people fast. That s when I turned to LinkedIn. Within a matter of 6 months of me being in business, I was able to go international. The reason I tell this story is to show you the powerful effect of this platform. Now, how was I able to do that and how are you able to do the same thing? #1 FIND A PROBLEM AND CREATE THE SOLUTION 7 P a g e

8 The key to success is you find out what 98% of the population is doing and you run in the opposite direction. Why? Because 98% of the population is failing! 2% is succeeding rapidly. You find the 2%er s and you model what they do. I was told to find someone who is successful and model what they do. So what I did is research my industry to find where the BIGGEST problems were and I created a solution several of them as a matter of fact! So what you need to do, whether you are in business for yourself, looking for a career, in career transition, or trying to reinvent yourself Is look at your industry and find where the BIGGEST problem is and FUFILL that NEED! Find out what people NEED, not what they WANT. A WANT is different than a NEED. A NEED is something that people can t live WITHOUT. A WANT often times is nothing more than a FAD. (FADs come and go), but NEEDS are often HERE to STAY! So I figured out what people needed and I created a brand around it. #2 CREATE A BRAND Now you might be saying to yourself, Well, how do I create a brand if I m an employee? Let me give you this revelation. You are marketing yourself. What unique values do you bring to the table that NO-ONE else within your ranking can? From that one question alone you need to create a brand for yourself. This is how you stand out from everyone else in the marketplace. You begin to speak the language of what the companies are looking for. And why? Because you first found out what 8 P a g e

9 their problem was, how you can become a solution to it and where their biggest needs are! When you have that down and you learn to brand yourself to the marketplace you will become unstoppable! That is when people come running after you Much easier than you having to chase down every single person, cold call companies, cold call your ideal client, beg people to work with you, and convince them you re the #1 guy/gal for the position! 2 very different ways of thinking: shoving it down their throat or creating an eager desire for them to want what you have! #3 CREATING A UNIQUE VALUE PROPOSITION 9 P a g e

10 Once you create a brand you must know how to present who you are, what you offer, and the unique skills you bring to the table and explain what your value is worth! You don t want to look like your average Joe. That will not set you apart from the crowd to make you look like the shining star! Your message needs to be crafted just for you. Just like your thumb-print is molded just to you. It s your personal DNA. (No two people are alike) No two messages, branding, and identity in your unique craft are alike either. You re messaging needs to answer these questions: Who are you? What problems do you solve? Who are you looking to target? How do you help others? Example: I help individuals looking for employment, in transition or looking to build their existing company to be seen, be heard, and get hired by their next ideal company or client so they can understand the use of digital technology in order to stand out in today s over crowded marketplace! This answers, right in the beginning, who I serve, what I do, what you will gain, and how! Very simple. You want them to ask you, Ok,well, in what ways do you do that? Giving away too much information up front leaves the person confused. The more simple the better! 10 P a g e

11 CHAPTER 2 LET S SHOW THEM YOU VE GOT WHAT IT TAKES! Often times when clients come to me and they want my expert advice on how they can stand apart from everyone else on LinkedIn, the very first question I ask them is this: What makes you so unique and different from the next person within your industry? The reason I ask this question is because I m truly looking for them to convey a story to me to make me really believe that they have something so uniquely different from the next guy within their niche market. 11 P a g e

12 The funny thing is that when I m on the phone with the person they can tell me in words what they do, why they do it, what their biggest passion is about what they do, how they can go conquer the world and so forth and so on. However, here is the biggest mistake I see most people make within their LinkedIn profile and it MUST come to an END if you ever want to get BIG results from your ideal audience. You must be willing to convey your story on paper. In words. In black and white print. Otherwise you will not win over ANYONE. What I see on LinkedIn is people convey what makes them so great. All their wonderful awards, achievements, degrees, how they created the best thing ever and how it will solve every problem under the sun from generation y to generation forever and beyond! That message will drive people further away from you vs draw them in. Why do you say that you might ask? Because there is no personal relationship building. All it does is tell them how good you are vs tell them what it can do for the other person involved who is your potential customer! Your goal is to be able to convey a story so that it builds what I like to call me too s points of connection where your ideal audience can relate to the message you re conveying and say oh yes I can relate to that, me too. I ve been there, done that, and would love to learn more about how this can truly benefit my life in some way. When you tell your story it draws them to say: hey they have something that I want and I must learn more about what this person has to offer! So the point here is: when you are writing your LinkedIn summary you don t only want 1-3 sentences and you most certainly don t want to convey a message that when done reading it that someone needs to give you an award for your hard work. 12 P a g e

13 Simply share your story of how you got to where you are, why you are where you are today, the meaning behind what you bring to the world, perhaps the people who helped make your journey possible etc. Everyone has a journey and yours is worth sharing with the world. Don t hide it. It is worth more than you know and I m sure you ve paid a very expensive price to get to where you are today! Here are some simple tips that I recommend when writing your LinkedIn summary so that you convey your message as a story and come across as a true professional. #1. Do not be fake. People can read fake. Be real. No one wants to read a Hollywood drama. Be true to who you are. #2 Don t bunch all your sentences together into big paragraphs. This is what we call Direct Response Sales Copy. You want the most important content to grab the attention of the reader s eye right away! Here are some tips to help you do that: -You can t bold, italicize or underline on LinkedIn, but you can use icons and symbols listed below: Stars: Arrows:» Traditional bullets: Ticks: 13 P a g e

14 Phone: Lines: Make sure that you space out all your paragraphs so that they are not all bunched together. Your summary should consist of all 1500 characters and spaces. This is LinkedIn s maximum requirement! #3 Make sure that you use proper grammar and spelling. This is so important. Have an expert look over your document. So many times I read through peoples profiles and find a ton of errors. This may sound elementary, but it s the truth: You only have one shot to impress your audience and you want to make it a great lasting 1 st impression. #4 Not everyone is the best writer or story teller - so a good way to start off your story is with a quote, phrase or anecdote. For example: List a bunch of skill sets that you bring to the table and then state something like this: Without these skill-sets, one will be devoured alive like a young tree in the midst of a ferocious hurricane. Not a pretty sight and to be avoided at all costs! Another example is: What makes someone like me stand apart from others within the Technical Analysis and Production Research fields is that I am not only able to hold firm through the winds of change, but I am also able to adapt and change effectively with elements of the new landscape. #5 Another great way to share your story, if you are at a loss for words, is to do a cross comparison like.. I m a person that loves numbers, sorry, but I just can t help it! What do you expect, I m an accountant. When I first began following the economy I was 10 years old. Can you believe that I was writing down the monthly 14 P a g e

15 unemployment rates, inflation rate, interest rates and quarterly GDP? But I'm not just a numbers guy. Many people have a preconceived idea of what an accountant is he s the guy that has his desk filled with spreadsheets, calculators and pencils. Right? Well, that s not me at all. Let me tell you my story in a nutshell I truly hope that these tips help you in being able to create your profile summary so that you can stand out in an overcrowded marketplace and attract your ideal audience. You are very unique in your own special way and the world needs to hear about the special gifts that only you have to offer. CONCLUSION I truly feel that if you apply these simple steps to your regular social media activity you will get faster results than you started with. Social Media is consistently changing and if you don t keep up with the high demands you will simply be left out of the action. My goal is to make sure that you stand out above your competitors so that you can BE SEEN, BE HEARD AND GET HIRED regardless of your education, knowledge, experience or talent. You have everything already built inside of you in order to create success it s just a matter of bringing that talent to the for front and letting it be exposed so others can get a feel for the greatness you bring to the world.
