6 INTRODUCTION Create your dream life Every successful person in this world is goal-oriented. They know what they want in life and they are focused on achieving it. The main reason for their great success is clear, specific, measurable goals written down and accompanied by a burning desire to accomplish them. Truly knowing exactly what you want dramatically increases the chances that you will get it. If you are vague and unsure about what you want you will likely be unhappy and unsuccessful in life. And then there are people who know what they want, but then get sidetracked from accomplishing the things they want to get done. It s a lot less likely to happen if you have a plan for achieving the things you want to accomplish. All successful people have a goal. No one can get anywhere unless he knows where he wants to go and what he wants to be or do. - Norman Vincent Peale The way to achieve success is first to have a definite, clear practical ideal a goal, an objective. 7 Understand why goal setting is important Success is not an overnight accomplishment it takes planning and hard work. You have to have a roadmap that will help you stay focused on where you want go. If you don t know where you are going, you will never get there. If you aim at nothing, you re sure to hit it. You may work hard and keep busy, but if you do not set goals you will soon find yourself working hard without any meaningful results. Without goals, we wander aimlessly throughout life. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Any plan is better than no plan at all. You must have an aim, a vision, a goal. Most people stay in their boring job not because they want to, but because they are so used to it. Even though it is boring and the pay is miserable at least they know what to expect. They can live with it. It is the fear of the unknown that stops people from even daring to dream. They would rather stay in the rut than not knowing what the future holds. Most people are afraid to venture into uncharted territory but there is where the excitement is. Stretch yourself and enter the world of endless possibilities! 11 THE 5 STEPS IN GOAL SETTING There are 5 steps in the goal setting process. Each step is equally important. You need to satisfy requirements for each step before proceeding to the next step otherwise you are setting yourself up for failure. The most common mistake is going straight to Step 4 which is the action stage. Without setting the necessary groundwork, you are doomed to fail. If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. 12 Step 1. Self Awareness The first phase is Self Awareness. Knowing yourself is the first step in the process of pursuing your goals. Understand who you are so you can set goals that are YOU. Do a life inventory to discover what your values are, what is important to you and what you are passionate about. Step 2. Preparation The next step is changing your mindset. You will work on your mindset and tap into your subconscious mind to accelerate the process of success creation. This step is where we build a psychological foundation to strengthen your belief that you are going to succeed. Step 3. Planning In this step you will create a clearly defined set of goals complete with an action plan. Step 4. Taking Action This is where the fun is. You will create a daily to do list and implement the steps that you have written down. Step 5. Managing Success In this step you will track your progress and manage any setbacks that occur. 14 STEP 1. SELF AWARENESS The first phase is Self Awareness. Knowing yourself is the first step in the process of pursuing your goals. Understand who you are so you can set goals that are YOU. Do a life inventory to discover what your values are, what is important to you and what you are passionate about. Consider what it is you value the most, or what is important in your life right now. Take stock of your life Begin with taking stock of your life and doing a life inventory. Reflect on what gives your life meaning. List down what is important in your life. What is it that you enjoy doing most? What is it that you would do with your life willingly even if you were not getting paid for it? What is important to me: Create a Vision Do you have a vision for your life? Create a vision for your life to help you stay true to what you want your life to become. 15 My Vision: Clarify your values Think about what values really matter to you. Be brutally honest. If the innate values that you have are not congruent with the values that you need to have to achieve your goal, you are going to be in conflict. You are setting yourself up for failure. 16 Believe in yourself In order to achieve your goal you have to believe that you can do it. Believe you can get it. If you don t believe you can achieve it, you will sabotage your own goals. You have to believe. Do I believe I will be successful? Do I believe this goal is worth the effort? It is crucial that you believe without a doubt that you can do it. Your subconscious mind is really powerful and will detect any doubt that you have. "If you expect the best, you will be the best. Learn to use one of the most powerful laws in this world; change your mental habits to belief instead of disbelief. Learn to expect, not to doubt. In so doing, you bring everything into the realm of possibility. " - Dr. Norman Vincent Peale Everyone deserves to have what they want, and everyone should believe that they are good enough to get what they want. If you have limiting beliefs, you should change your thought process by believing that you deserve what you want. Even if you have to fake it before you make it meaning that you can tell yourself that you do deserve what you want before you believe what you are saying to yourself, and eventually you will believe just that! Limitations live only in our minds. But if we use our imaginations, our possibilities become limitless. - Jamie Paolinetti (American Schroeder Iron Pro Cycling) Be Authentic Be true to yourself. Do not pursue a goal because someone else wants you to or because you see other people pursuing it. It is your life and you have only one life. So make sure you do what you want to do. Often people set out goals to satisfy others, be it their parents, spouse or children rather than themselves. Even though the intention is admirable, you have to choose something that means something to you. You have to be self-centered when it comes to your goals. When you are determining which goals you would like to pursue you should not entertain the wishes of others and select goals that are only dear to your heart. A lot of people end up with a career that they do not like because it wasn t their choice. Most of the time they are stuck with it for life! Own Your Goal. Choose only the goals that are congruent with your desires and needs, because selecting goals that others want without your committed desire is a formula for failure. Don't let the noise of other's opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. Choose goals that you are passionate about. Successful people do what they need to do because they love it. 19 STEP 2. PREPARATION The second step is about changing your mindset. Before you can change your life, you need to reprogram your mind. You will work on your mindset and tap into your subconscious mind and accelerate the process of success creation. This step is where we build a psychological foundation to maximize your inner strengths and minimize your doubts. This will strengthen your belief that you are going to succeed. Understand the Unconscious Mind The unconscious mind is what drives us. All profound change happens at the subconscious level. The reason being the subconscious mind cannot tell the difference between imagination and reality. Any thought you consciously choose to impress upon the sub-conscious again and again, becomes fixed in this part of your persona. Law of Attraction A lot of people do not get what they want for very simple reasons. It all comes down to the law of attraction. You attract your most dominant thoughts. If you are acting, thinking, or feeling negative you will only attract negativity in your life. If you are acting, thinking, or feeling positive, you will attract the positive in your life! Mind is the Master power that moulds and makes, And Man is Mind, and evermore he takes The tool of Thought, and, shaping what he wills, Brings forth a thousand joys, a thousand ills:- He thinks in secret, and it comes to pass: Environment is but his looking-glass. - James Allen The problem with most people is that they see and feel what they don't want. and that's what they get fast and often. The law of attraction is the most powerful law in the universe. Basically you get what you think about, whether you want it or not. If you are constantly thinking about the things that you desire, your life experience reflects those things but on the other hand if you are mainly thinking about the things that you do not want, the universe delivers exactly what you do not want. Any negativity will only attract more negative actions, feelings and thoughts. It is a vicious circle where you will likely never get what you want if you do not change these things. 20 Steps of Law of Attraction are really simple Step 1: Know What You Want Step 2: Ask For It Step 3: Be Ready To Receive Of course you need to take action towards what you want as well. By not acting upon your goal, your goal will only be a dream. Thoughts, Feelings and action guarantees success. When all these three are in alignment, you can get anything you desire and you deserve. Be willing to receive Successful people possess a skill that unsuccessful people do not have. On a subconscious level they are ready to receive whatever is coming their way. The ability to receive is key to being successful. You must be willing to receive what the universe can provide with joy, with no guilt, shame or negative feeling. There is nothing wrong with having a desire to receive. In order for you to help others, you must have the ability to receive before you can share with others. Visualize Now close you eyes and visualize a beautiful, beautiful yellow lemon. It s so soft and juicy. Now imagine you take a knife and you slice it in half. You take one half and you whole-heartedly bite into it. Is your mouth watering? Visualization is the easiest and cheapest creation tool that you can find. The subconscious mind cannot tell the difference between imagination and reality. You can use visualizations to create a beautiful life for yourself or to deal with life's challenges, from being overweight to fear of public speaking. You can heal even yourself and others through visualizing perfect health. Sometimes you may find that you focus on what you do not want instead of what you do want. You can easily change this by focusing and visualizing on your dream, and imagining that you already have achieved what you want. Begin to focus on your dreams, not what you do not want, and attract the positive things with positive visualization! Now go ahead visualize your ideal life. Create a beautiful vision of what your life will look like one year from now, five years from now, ten years from now, twenty years form now etc. Describe to yourself in detail how it makes you feel when you Copyright 2007 Zainah Zainalabidin 20

21 have achieved your goal where you are living, who you are spending time with and what you are doing. Get all your 5 senses involved to really feel that you already have achieved this. Visualize in your mind that you have already achieved your future. What does it look like? What does it smell like? What does it taste like? What does it feel like? What does it sound like? Visualize your future. Just visualize your future as you want it to be. At least a week before going into action on your goals, each day visualize yourself in action as often as you possibly can. Practice visualization everyday before going into the action stage of your project. Visualization preceding the action stage will firm up your commitment and strengthen your inner strength. Visualize your goals and yourself in action continually. If you are having a challenge to visualize there are tools in the market that can help you visualize better. The one that I use is called Attraction Accelerator Create a Vision Board You can also create a vision board to remind you of your goals. A Vision Board will guarantee the fact that you ll remember every single day from now on the goals you want to achieve. 22 Whenever I feel like giving up, I would gaze at my vision board. It gives me energy to go on and in addition would remember my ultimate ten year goal. A vision board is easy to create. There are basically 3 tasks to creating one: 1. Select the picture that visualizes your vision or your dream in each area of your life. Choose the picture that visualizes your dream job, a lovely family or love life, optimal health and fitness, being a wealthy person and whatever else you desire. Find a beautiful thing or a symbol that represents what you want to own in your life. 2. Write down or print out goals and, or affirmations describing what you want to achieve. 3. Glue the pictures and the power phrases all together on a board. Easy! Now go ahead and start designing your vision board! Remember you have to display your vision board where you can see it often throughout the day. Practice Daily Affirmation The process of repetition using affirmations can modify or create new beliefs about a person s identity. Eventually, the affirmation will dominate over the previous beliefs in the person s subconscious and will automatically produce the matching behavior. To make affirmations effective they have to: Support your values, Be specific Be in present tense Be positive Be short and simple You have to get emotionally involved with your affirmation. If you don t get excited about what you are saying, it s unlikely that your subconscious mind is going to believe it. Here are some sample affirmations: I love my life, I am so blessed. I am in perfect health. I love my job. Success comes to me easily and effortlessly. I am a successful businessman. I am a money magnet. Copyright 2007 Zainah Zainalabidin 22

23 I am enjoying my life with my happy family. I am in a loving relationship. My family loves me exactly as I am. I am perfectly healthy and fit. I am healthy in body, mind and spirit. I am fit and energetic. Every cell, nerve, tissue organ in my body is perfect. There is so much joy in my home. I have all the resources to accomplish all my goals. Money comes to me in increasing quantities. Now it s your turn. Write at least ten affirmations in support of your dreams an goals. Memorize them by heart and read them out loud. Say these affirmations as if you really mean it. Say them a few times each day. You can do it while you are getting ready in the morning, taking a shower, when you are doing your morning run or when you are driving. The more you put into practice, the more real it becomes to you. 24 Get Grateful There is a magnetic and powerful power in gratitude. Gratitude increases your abundant life. The more grateful you are. the more abundance will be showered upon you. Gratitude becomes the cause instead of the effect. This step in the creation process is crucial. When we don t appreciate and celebrate what we already have in our life, we are slowing down the creation process. When we are ungrateful and focus on what s missing in our lives; when we complain about not having enough money or not having nice friends that is what you get more of. Make gratitude a way of life. Live it! Express gratitude in your life every day. Start the day and end it with I am grateful for. Throughout the day count your blessings and express them. Gratitude will bring more into our lives immediately. Now think about what you are grateful for in your life and start writing. 25 Find a Mentor You do not have to reinvent the wheel! Duplicate those who have been successful in the area that you want improvement. Learn from someone else s experience. It will make the road to achieving your dreams easier and faster. If you want to make a million in a year find someone who has done it and model what they do to achieve success. Mentors can provide you with the wisdom, guidance, advice and encouragement as you set goals. Find someone who knows more about the area of your goal than you do, and learn as much as you can from them. First and foremost clearly define what it is you want the mentor to do. Select a mentor based on a clearly defined purpose, specific need, reasonable expectations, accessibility and availability, and, finally on a comfort level appropriate to the situation. If you want to make ten million dollars, make sure you choose someone who has already achieved that. Choose someone you admire. You don t necessarily have to admire everything about them. Because you disagree with certain elements of their life, you should not disregard him or her completely. Be aware of their time commitments. 28 STEP 3. GOAL CREATION & PLANNING Write down your goals Writing down your goals is a critical first step, as it provides the foundation on which to build your dreams. Writing it down, along with your specific action plan will make your goal more concrete. Studies have shown that people who write down the list of things they want to do are more likely to accomplish them. Putting your goal in writing sets up a filter that helps you become aware of your surroundings. Once you write down a goal, your brain will be working overtime to see you get it, and will alert you to the signs and signals that were there all along. Read your goals everyday and program it in your subconscious mind. Let your goals be your dominant thought. Brainstorm Your Dream Everyday life is challenging, but it is important to make time to sit down and reflect on your future. Where do you want to be in five years from now? 10 years from now? 20 years from now? Let s do a bit of Brainstorming: Dream Starter Brainstorm Brainstorm a list of anything you would like to achieve, be, do, have, create, give and/or experience. Let your mind go crazy. Write down everything that you want in your life if you have no limitations. Imagine that you have all the resources, all the money, all the intelligence, all the power, all the contacts in the world. Don t limit yourself. What do you want more in your life? Just imagine that you can be, do and have anything in your life. Be that little boy or little girl that will not take no for an answer. If your life were perfect what would it be like? Okay now go! 32 Create Your Future Vision Now decide on a timeline for your goals. Go through your list and write down when you want to achieve the goal i.e. 6 months,1,3,5,10,15, or 20 years. Instead, make a concrete plan to cut down to just two or three a day for a week, and then one cup less for every day the next week, and so-on. Implementing gradual change builds a strong foundation for your success. Create Well-Formed Goal Statement Careful attention should be placed on constructing a clear and accurate goal statement. An effective approach to defining your goals is to utilize the SMART goal format. SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Time bound. S = M = A = R = T = Specific: Do you know exactly what you want to accomplish with all the details? I want to make $100,000 from my internet marketing business within 1 year from today is better than I want to make a lot of money. Measurable: Can you quantify your progress so you can track it? How will the goal be measured? Are you able to assess your progress? Action Oriented: Active goals tell you what specific action you are taking and include includes strong action do it words that keep you moving forward Realistic: Is your goal a stretch but still possible to achieve? Having high goals that stretch you is important, but you need to also need to create goals that are realistic for your situation and skill level. Your chance of accomplishing your goals is increased if you tell others; especially when you tell people who matter to you what you're going to do. Writing down a goal and then telling a friend or family member creates a psychological drive to follow through on your commitment. Sharing goals with others who can give you help and support is a highly effective way to increase your chances for success. However, if you do not take action on any of these things, nothing will happen! You must be willing to make the necessary actions to achieve what you want out of your life and your future. There are so many things that can distract us from doing what we want to do that is why having a goal is so important. Cultivate Good Habits Habits can serve us wisely and provide us with great powers to achieve our goals. We can train and educate ourselves, through habit, to do a lot of things automatically and thus save time and energy. We react to the world the way we have programmed ourselves to do. We will keep getting the same results unless we change our programmed habits. It takes 21 days to form a new habit as proven by Dr Maxwell Maltz. So if you want to start a new habit, you have to do it for 21 consecutive days. If you miss a day, then you have to start from day one all over again. We can form habits that will make our lives healthy and beautiful, or we can continue to do things that will lead us nowhere. It s our choice. Excellence is not a singular act, but a habit. 52 change. There are various reasons why people procrastinate but the most common reasons are fear of failure, fear of being imperfect and fear of being overwhelmed. You may not believe you will ever achieve what you want, so you procrastinate and eventually never take action to get what you want. So how do you eliminate procrastination? Here are some tips to help overcome procrastinations: Don t wait until you feel like it. Start Now! The situation will never be ideal. Chunk it down. Don t let yourself get overwhelmed by the size or the complexity of a project. Ask the saying goes, How do you eat an elephant? A bite at a time. Don t demand perfection from yourself. Remind yourself that you don t have to do everything perfectly. Reward yourself with something that you really love every time you finish a task. It will motivate you to get cracking and finish the task quickly. Make sure the reward is commensurate with the task at hand. Enjoy the Journey Have fun. Enjoy the process and the journey. Ask yourself what can I do to make it a level 10 experience? We're so busy watching out for what's just ahead of us that we don't take time to enjoy where we are. - Calvin & Hobbs Associate with the right people When going gets tough go to a coach, support group, a loved one. Get encouragement and support. Surround yourself with people who are positive, who share your vision and who are going to support you. Stay away from people who are what I call energy suckers. Grab a Buddy Everyone needs to be cheered on once in a while. Grab a buddy to accompany you on some of the tasks that you want to do to get you closer to your goals. 53 you and your friend decide that you want to lose weight and be fit, start going to the gym together. Rewrite Your Goals Daily Write down your goals everyday. By writing and rewriting your goals everyday, you will become clearer about what you want and be more convinced about achieving your goals. You will start to attract people and resources into your life that can help you achieve your goals faster. Keep On Visualizing Your Goals Remember to use visualization and affirmation daily. Throughout the day visualize your goals as if they already existed. These are easy and free tools that you can use to your advantage. Use them many times during the day, starting from when you first get up in the morning and before you drift off to sleep at night. They are essential tools to your success. Manage Your Time Improve your time management skills. You cannot manage your time; you can only manage the use of your time. In other words, you have to manage yourself. It is about mastering yourself. Invest your time as opposed to spending your time. Before doing any activity, ask yourself, does it move me closer to my goals or move me away from my goals? Minimize the activities that move you away from your goal and embrace the activities that get me going towards my goal. Identify small pockets of time in your day that are underutilized such as getting up earlier. Take advantage of commuting time. If you are taking the train or the bus, you can read or do some paperwork. If you are driving you can listen to tapes or CDs that can help you improve your life. Get rid of unnecessary tasks. People frequently weigh themselves down with things that really aren t important, like cleaning every day or going to the grocery store daily. 54 feeling like you haven t accomplished much of anything. Identify these problem areas, get rid of them and you ll save yourself bundles of time. Learn how to say no. You simply have to stop offering yourself up and learn to delegate tasks to others. If it s at work, find someone else who can easily handle the task. If it s at home, get the kids to help out. You have to realize that you just can t do everything and that s okay. Milestone Create a calendar marked with clear milestones. It s important to check in with your resolution goals daily to give yourself a visual aid of accomplishment. Your calendar will also give you the opportunity to shift milestones as needed or boost your confidence to continue as you review your progression. Plan Your Day Ahead Make sure you plan your day ahead. This will only take you 10 minutes per day but it will help you to become more productive. Ideally you should do this the evening or night before. When you get up the next day, you will know exactly what you need to achieve for the day and you are ready to get going.
