1 Murrieta Valley Unified School District High School Course Outline January 2004 Department: Course Title: Visual and Performing Arts Advanced Three Dimensional Design Course Number: 6175 Grade Level: Length of Course: Prerequisite: Year Art 1 or Three Dimensional Design I UC/CSU (A-G) Requirement: F I. Goals The student will: A. Demonstrate an understanding of technical and conceptual foundations of three-dimensional design. (VPA Standard 1.0) B. Integrate research to resolve and identify design problems using techniques and skills in various media. (VPA Standard 2.0, 5.0) C. Learn the historical references and aesthetic theories pertaining to 3D art. (VPA Standard 3.0, 4.0) D. Utilize historical references and theories in their use of media as a means of personal expression and communication. (VPA Standard 3.0, 4.0, 5.0) E. Create and maintain a portfolio that reflects their growth in craftsmanship and their capacity to communicate ideas visually and verbally through written and oral critiques. The portfolio will reflect their exploration of art careers by various media and stages of design. (VPA Standard 2.0, 4.0, 5.0) II. Outline of Content for Major Areas of Study (All three-dimensional projects have portfolio entries that include sketches, plans, patterns, and detailed critiques of expository writing about the techniques used.)

Rodin, Michelangelo studies and slides b. Working with plaster, pouring and carving c. Anatomical studies of human form d. Finishing, sanding, working 3D figure in the round 3. Sculpture in a series a. Methods and armature study b. Contour drawing, composition c. Plasticene clay- quick studies d. Working with groups of objects, scale 4. Creating a model a. Foamcore b. Working from still life c. Craftsmanship and original design d. Interior/exterior forms e. Creating a 3D pattern from cardboard f. Finishing, paint g. Marketable qualities 5. Paper making techniques a. Introduction to the human skull and portraiture b. Mexican folk art (Dia de los muertos), research Mesoamerica c. Express ideas specifically through three-dimensional form D. Evaluate appropriate medium(s) to convey design ideas E. Three-dimensional projects 1. Pop art sculpture a. Sketch from miniature model with realistic value b. Composition from thumbnail sketches c. Sculpture enlargement from model d. Modern art historical references e. Appropriate medium ( individual decision) 2. Mold making a. Clay techniques, plaster pour and paper casting b. Bas relief craving c. Architectural tiles, wall sconces or reliefs d. Organic or geometric themes or patterns e. Review: repetition, movement (rhythm), balance f. Figure/ground relationship 3. Contemporary Sculpture: Shape and form a.
