3 Program Description Plumbers install pipes for water, gas and medical gas systems. They also install sanitary facilities such as lavatories, toilets, tubs, bathroom fixtures, showers, kitchen fixtures, drinking fountains and laundry equipment. Plumbers use a variety of skills to install piping systems. They use both hand and power tools in their work for cutting, bending and threading pipe and make solid welded and soldered joints. Plumbers must also run tests on their installations to assure that the system is functioning properly and meets the plumbing code. They are often called upon to clear pipelines and drains and to make repairs on fixtures and leaking pipes. 19 Commercial Plumber Course Descriptions First Year 234 Total Hours 22 credits (11 hours: 1 credit ratio, per contract with RTC) 211 OSHA Safety training with special emphasis on areas in construction that are most dangerous. OSHA Standards that apply to the construction industry will be used as a guide. All persons completing the course will be issued an OSHA card SOLDERING & BRAZING Technical recognition of the soldering and brazing processes with hands-on experience as well as classroom data. 205 RIGGING Learn crane signaling, knot tying, use of chain falls, wire and web slings and rigging safety using text and hands-on with the equipment COMMERCIAL PLUMBING RELATED MATH Designed for the first year apprentice, this course is one of the building blocks of a successful career in the pipe trades PIPING & CONNECTIONS This omnibus course gives you a look or touch on nearly every type of pipe material and joining methods, as well as the tools used in the field. 3 COMMERCIAL PLUMBING THEORY I This course will serve as an introduction to the theories and principles of properly installed plumbing systems. The student will be able to identify all components with respect to design, function and code HERITAGE I This course explains how the United Association Local 32 union organization operates, its principles, and the benefits of union membership. Students learn the history of the union, its future goals, and expectations and norms of being a union member. 203 FIRST AID/CPR Learn to respond to cardiac, breathing and first aid emergencies. 800 PLUMBER BASIC ELECTRICITY This class combines electrical theory and hands-on experience as it pertains to the work of plumber apprentices CUSTOMER SERVICE One of our most profitable assets is ourselves and our skills. For first year apprentices, this will focus on salesmanship, planning and presentation of professionals ANTI-HARASSMENT TRAINING Appropriate expectations will be reviewed in this course, leading to an equitable and inclusive workplace. 18
20 Second Year Total Hours 22 credits (11 hours: 1 credit ratio, per contract with RTC) 4 COMMERCIAL PLUMBING THEORY II This course is a continuation of course 3, giving the students more responsibilities and likewise more complex problems. 324 PLUMBING ROUGH-IN This class will have the apprentice apply his knowledge of the code in a real world setting. You will also convert plan view drawings to proper isometric FINANCIAL PLANNING Apprentices will learn how to set financial goals, and prepare financially for being in an apprenticeship, including: building an emergency fund; creating a savings plan; saving for the future; building good credit, and paying down debt HERITAGE II Apprentices will learn about the labor/management agreement governing the terms of their program and work, as well as Robert's Rules, and avenues for becoming active in subcommittees, associations and civic duties ANTI-HARASSMENT TRAINING Appropriate expectations will be reviewed in this course, leading to an equitable and inclusive workplace. 8 WATER HEATERS - COMMERCIAL This subject matter will enable you to identify the correct installation, troubleshooting, service and maintenance procedures for both gas and electric water heaters. 19
21 Third Year 229 Total Hours 21 credits (11 hours: 1 credit ratio, per contract with RTC) 1905 DRAFTING II This course will enhance the student s ability to convert mechanical drawings from a plan view drawing to proper isometric drawings. This will help the student transfer this information in AutoCAD and 3D drawings on the computer. 203 FIRST AID/CPR (RENEWAL) Renew required card by participating in training to respond to cardiac, breathing and first aid emergencies ADVANCED BRAZING This course will expose students to the latest brazing materials in the industry. Students will practice brazing copper to copper, copper to brass and copper to steel. This course will prepare the student to take brazing certification UA BACKFLOW PREVENTION DAY This course will give you classroom instruction and hands-on training in the installation, service, repair and testing of backflow prevention devices. Upon successful completion of the state exam you will receive a Backflow Assembly Testing Certificate. 5 COMMERCIAL PLUMBING THEORY III This course is a continuation of course 4, giving the students more responsibilities and likewise more complex problems. 1 BACKFLOW PREVENTION NIGHT This course is a continuation of the Backflow prevention training which occurs during the daytime schedule, and includes problem-solving scenarios. 329 SPEC. SYSTEM TRAINING This class shall familiarize the apprentice with the different types of acid and purity systems and the installation requirements for each type. It shall include manufacture specific for glue, fusion & mechanical joints ANTI-HARASSMENT TRAINING Appropriate expectations will be reviewed in this course, leading to an equitable and inclusive workplace. 20
22 Fourth Year 2 Total Hours 21 credits (11 hours: 1 credit ratio, per contract with RTC) 25 COMMERCIAL PLUMBING JOB PLANNING This is a great course if you are interested in running work. We will simulate the proper procedure for laying out and organizing a project AUTOCAD I Use the latest version of computer aided drafting in our state-of-the-art classroom. Projects include drawing simple objects to layering entire mechanical systems. 325 CODE APPLICATION This class shall make the apprentice proficient in the application of the UPC as it applies to waste, vent and water supply systems in commercial and residential applications. 821 WATER BALANCE & COMMISSIONING This course will cover a breakdown study of current start, test, balance and commissioning practices. The emphasis of this class will be to cover the theory and hand techniques of start test and balance used in service, retrofit and new construction MEDICAL GAS The instruction in this course will focus on the proper procedures and requirements needed to successfully install or retrofit a Medical Gas System. This course is approved by L&I for a Washington State Medical Gas endorsement ANTI-HARASSMENT TRAINING Appropriate expectations will be reviewed in this course, leading to an equitable and inclusive workplace. 21
23 Fifth Year 229 Total Hours 21 credits (11 hours: 1 credit ratio, per contract with RTC) 322 PLUMBER STAR PREP (W/EXAM) This course will provide information to assist the student in passing the UA STAR Plumber certification. 7 UPC CODE PREP A prep course for those about to take the state exam. In order to obtain a certificate each applicant must submit affidavits of 8000 hours plumbing experience while in the possession of a trainee card GAS PIPING Identify and interpret the Uniform Mechanical Code for natural and LP gas installations. Included will be proper sizing, installation and troubleshooting methods. This course includes the test for the Seattle Gas Mechanic license. 10 GENERAL WELDING This course is designed for those with little or no experience in arc welding. Starting with the safety requirements and explanations of the welding process, each student will progress toward the objective of passing a vertical and overhead bend test. 203 FIRST AID/CPR (RENEWAL) Renew required card by participating in training to respond to cardiac, breathing and first aid emergencies FOREMAN CLASS (W/EXAM) Designed to assist you with organizing the jobs, people, tools material and information. You will be exposed to the skills needed to motivate people, organize yourself for increased productivity and document your daily activities. 912 TRADE REVIEW This summation course prepares apprentices for final exams and credentials needed to successfully journey out of their program SHOP STEWARD You can help yourself and your union by becoming a better shop steward. A representative from the business office will guide the students through the contract language preparing members to address labor/management issues ANTI-HARASSMENT TRAINING Appropriate expectations will be reviewed in this course, leading to an equitable and inclusive workplace. 22
