2 CETA Type of Course Occupational qualification offered on a full-time basis in a learnership format. The purpose of the Qualification: Qualifying learners will be able to perform trade-related skills with specific reference to: - Use engineering tools, measuring instruments and electrical technology. - Read, interpret and produce basic electrical engineering drawings and circuits. - Apply hand skills applicable to electrical installation and maintenance. - Understand and apply basic electrical installation assembly techniques to install, maintain, repair, overhaul or recondition designated circuits, electrical machines and sub-components. - Understand basic electrical theory and the application in relation to the maintenance and function of machines. With this understanding, learners will be able to participate in workplace activities. The foundational learning in this Qualification would serve as a basis for further learning where they will engage in more advanced installation, maintenance and repair activities. 2 / 8

6 Computer Literacy Credits 7 - Operate a personal computer system - Use a Graphical User Interface (GUI)-based word processor to create and edit documents Upon successful completion of the course, the learner will be proficient in the following key areas: - Handling of job cards. - Keep the work area safe and productive. - Identify engineering materials, their characteristics and applications. - Knowledge of common metal tests used in an engineering environment. - Marking with different marking instruments. - Measuring with vernier calliper and micro-meter. - Shearing, bending and folding of sheet metal. - Filing surfaces in different shapes to size according technical drawings. - Operate and monitor a drilling machine to produce simple components. - Cutting inside and outside threads. - Cutting materials with hand and power tools. - Dismantling and re-assembling of a complex structure with engineering hand tools. 7 Trainee should be able to complete within12 months, inclusive of workplace-based training and assessment. The institutional-based contact training is 105 days over 21 weeks. Normal training day is 6 hours for Practical Modules and 3 hours for Theory Modules. Minimum Entry Requirements A General Education and Training Certificate at NQF Level 1 with Mathematics and Communication. Career Benefits standards which form part of most qualifcations at NQF level 2 in the automotive, electrical and engineering related sectors. By successful completion of the unit Standards the learner will be registered on the NLrD and the credits will be uploaded to it. The learner will achieve a level of skills which enhances his status in a company or will lead to a formal employment. Assessment Method Continuous assessments (formative) are carried out throughout the training (written tests and practical assignments) in order to monitor progress and quality of learning. A summative assessment is conducted at the end of each module that may include a knowledge test and practical test as well as workplace-based evaluation. 7 / 8
