Claude Monet Secret to good drawing (and anything else). If you want to improve you must draw a lot. Less important is how "good" any individual drawing looks.

3 Supplies No need to buy something if you already have something that will work. This is a reduced set of supplies compared to in-studio paintng. 4 Supplies Sketchbook. I recommend a wire-bound book because they are much easier to fold open. One sketchbook. Size is up to you (I suggest 5 x 7 inches to 9 x 12 inches) Pencils and erasers. I like to use hard pencils because they produce lighter lines and can be erased more easily aver the watercolor is dry. Two pencils are good in case one gets lost (surprisingly easy). Two #2 pencils with a sov eraser (like the kind that school children use). AlternaTves: Medium hard (HB, 2B) pencils. SoV eraser (Kneaded, natural, rubber, etc.). Pen. It is optonal. The most important feature of a pen is that the ink is waterproof (permanent). I like fine points for small format drawings, but choose a size that is easiest for you to work with. My current pens: Kuretake Bimoji Brush Pen (fine point, more like a pen than a brush); Pelikan Fineliner (fine 0.4) I also have: Faber-Castell PITT ArTst Pen (S), Sharpie Permanent Marker (Ultra Fine Point)

5 Supplies Watercolor Pad. Small pads are the most transportable type of paper and the wet paper does not buckle while afached to the pad. One cold pressed pad. Size is up to you (I suggest 5 x 7 inches to 8 x 10 inches) Watercolor brushes. I suggest less expensive brushes to start with. That way it s easier to buy 2 or 3 kinds and experiment with them. I use brushes in the mid-price range. CauTon: Brush size numbers are NOT consistent across the brush makers! Two brushes: One small pointed round (#2 or 4-ish) and one medium round (#6 or 8-ish). A large flat (about 1 inch wide) brush is optonal.

6 Supplies - Colors 2 Yellows Light (e.g., lemon yellow) and Medium (e.g., cadmium yellow medium) 1 Orange (e.g., cadmium orange) 2 Reds Light (e.g., quinacridone red or magenta) and Medium (e.g., cadmium red) 2 Blues Light (e.g., cerulean) & Dark (e.g., ultramarine) 1 Green (e.g., permanent green, sap green). Green can be difficult to mix, so get a green that is closest to the green that you like, but not too dark. 2 Browns Light (e.g., yellow or gold ochre) and Dark (e.g., burnt or raw sienna or umber) 1 cool dark Pthalo colors (blue, green) OpTonal colors Purple (vivid purple is difficult to mix, so it can come in handy in your paint set) Black (easily made by mixing dark blue with dark brown) Gray (easily made by mixing dark blue with dark brown or purple and yellow)

7 OpBonal Supplies Pencil sharpener. Small, hand-held is the most convenient. Brush protector. I roll my brushes in a sushi roller from an Asian market (art stores may have something similar, at a much higher price). Two rubber bands are handy to keep it together. Mat. For either a 4 x 6 or 5 x 7 inch frame. Useful for drawing a square on your paper and for view finding (see making a viewfinder below) Bag. Can be a purse or small pack A way to keep your items in one place, not mixed with everything else. It can reduce Tme looking for your supplies when you want to go paint, and it helps protect brush and pencil Tps. Container for water. Clean, smallish plastc container. Paper towels. Only a few sheets; whole roll not necessary. Folding stool.

8 Let s Draw But first a word about photos Don t copy another person s photo without their permission if you plan on giving it away, making holiday cards, or selling it. When taking photos for later drawing: Don t put the center of afenton (reason for taking the photo) in the middle if you can avoid it. Take 2 or 3 extra photos (lev, right, above), in case you want to expand your drawing a bit. When drawing from a photo: Photos may distort tall objects (the real Eiffel tower does not lean to the lev, as in the photo) You will have to adjust your drawing to straighten things out
