1 WUA History The Federated Clothing Trades of the Commonwealth of Australia Industrial Union of Employees was formed in 1907 to take advantage of the provisions of the newly introduced Commonwealth Arbitration Act. A NSW branch of the Association was formed in May In 1922 the title was altered to the Federated Clothing and Allied Trades' Union. The title was again changed in 1924 when it became the Amalgamated Clothing and Allied Trades' Union. 4 WUA 1 Minutes - Amalgamated Journeymen Tailors' Association of NSW , v. 8 cm. The inaugural meeting of the Association was held on 8 February The Association was registered under the provisions of the NSW Trade Union Act in October 1882 and provided the NSW nucleus of the Federated Clothing Trades when that union was formed in Feb Jan 1884 [includes statement of income and expenditure 8 Feb Apr 1880] 2 21 Nov May Minutes - Pressers' Union of NSW v. 9 cm. A union of pressers was established on 8 September 1885 as the Pressers' Eight Hour Society of NSW. This Society had become the Pressers' Union of NSW by The Union appears to have merged with the Amalgamated Clothing and Allied Trades' Union of Australia, NSW Branch in Jan Dec Jan Jun Minutes - Cutters and Trimmers' Union of NSW v. 6 cm. The Union was first registered under the provisions of the NSW Trades Union Act in February The Union merged with the Amalgamated Clothing and Allied Trades' Union of Australia, NSW Branch, early in Mar Sep Sep Dec Minutes - Amalgamated Clothing and Allied Trades' Union, NSW Branch v. 27 cm. The Amalgamated Clothing and Allied Trades' Union came into being in 1924 as a direct successor to the Federated Clothing and Allied Trades' Union of Australia which had been in existence since Previously the union had been known as the Federated Clothing Trades of the Commonwealth of Australia Industrial Association of Employees. Annual conferences of state branch delegates were held to discuss matters affecting the Union throughout Australia. Under the provisions of the Federal Clothing Trades Award, the hours of employment were restricted to the period between 8 am and 6 pm. Decisions to vary these hours required the agreement of the staff and the written consent of the Union Correspondence - Outdoor Workers cm. Copies of correspondence between clothing manufacturers and the Industrial Registrar relating to the employment of outdoor workers. Under the provisions of the Clothing Trades Award, the Union was able to object to the issue of outdoor workers' licences Correspondence - Kevin McBride Memorial Fund cm. Correspondence accompanying donations to the memorial fund established by the NSW Branch to provide for the widow and children of Kevin McBride a former union organizer. 7

8 WUA 1 11 Aug Feb Correspondence - NSW Branch Executive cm. Correspondence relating to meetings, elections and delegates of the executive of the NSW Branch of the Union. The series includes nomination forms for the positions of delegate to the executive and to the Trades and Labor Council Correspondence - Motor Vehicles cm. Correspondence concerning motor vehicles owned by the Union. Files include letters and notices related to the insurance and service of vehicles Correspondence - Apprenticeship cm. Includes notices form the Apprenticeship Directorate of NSW to the Union advising of applications by employers to establish apprenticeships. The report of the NSW Apprenticeship Council for 1973 is also included Correspondence - Slow Workers cm. Under the provisions of the Clothing Award, employers were permitted to hire workers at less than the prescribed award if they could prove to the Union and the Industrial Registrar that the workers were incapable of working at a normal speed. The file includes copies of permits granted to slow workers Australian Council of Trade Unions cm. Includes copies of sundry minutes, circulars and decisions of the Manufacturing Group and Executive of the ACTU which affected the clothing industry

9 WUA 19 Clothing and Allied Trades' Union - Elections cm. Correspondence, ballot papers and telegrams concerning the conduct of union elections and the determination of various disputes relating to the management of the federal affairs of the Union Membership - Contribution Lists v. 60 cm. Shop stewards and union organizers were required to collect membership dues and to forward collections to the Branch Secretary. To facilitate collections, contribution books were issued which allowed original and duplicate entries. The series consists largely of original lists forwarded with collections. Lists indicate the name, card number and contribution for each member employed at a particular factory. Collections were generally collected quarterly. Each union organizer was allocated a number of clothing firms to visit in order to collect membership fees and to discuss with members problems arising from their employment. Shop stewards were required to collect membership dues and to forward collections to the Branch Secretary. To facilitate collections, stewards were issued with contribution books which allowed original and duplicate entries. The series consists of contribution books with carbon entries of contributions paid. Original lists accompanied the contributions to the Branch Secretary. [see /11]. Collections were generally colleted quarterly. Union Organizers were required to pay membership contributions to the Branch Office as soon as possible after they had been collected. Memoranda books were maintained for each organizer by the office to record these payments. Each entry records the date and amount of each payment as well as the numbers of receipts issued to contributors. 1 Dec Dec

Separate registers were maintained for male and female members. Entries state the name, address, employer and branch of trade of each member. The date on which the member joined the Union, and in some instances the date of resignation, is also noted. The registers appear to have been complied retrospectively. Tailoring, presser) in which the applicant was employed. [These records returned 8/9/1978] Membership - Notices of Resignation cm. The series results from section 8 of the Union's Rules which requires members to notify the Branch Secretary of their intention to resign. Notices of resignation generally indicate the name, union membership number and place of work of the resigning member. 13

The ledger is arranged chronologically by the number of the receipt issued for membership contributions paid in a particular month. Entries indicate the name of the union member, the amount contributed and the folio number of the relevant contribution book in which the yearly contributions for each member were listed. Entries indicate the address and telephone number of each firm and in some instances note that a manufacturer has ceased trading. Each union organizer was responsible for a number of clothing firms which were visited quarterly for the purposes of collecting union dues and of inquiring into the welfare of union members. Since the firms for which an organizer was responsible tended to change, there was considerable overlap of responsibility between organizers. Visit books indicate the dates on which an orgainizer visited each factory and the number of unionists employed there. Each file contains a summary of the event which led to the claim for compensation and details of the result of the claim. The summary includes the name, address and place of employment of the claimant. Files contain background data relating to issues affecting the Union and its members. 1 The Australian Textile Industry: A Review issued by the Department of Secondary Industry, June Printed material relating to manufacturing in Australia mostly issued by the Department of Manufacturing Industry, Correspondence and background data relating to the testing and manufacture of flame resistant clothing 37 Outdoor Workers - Notices of Hearings cm. Notices of hearings to be held before the Industrial Registrar of the Department of Labour and Industry, NSW for the purpose of considering application for the granting of outdoor worker's licences. Such licences enabled workers to manufacture garments in places other than factories. Under the provisions of the Clothing Trades Award, the Union could object to the issue of particular licences. The notices have been arranged by application number Outdoor Workers - Licences cm. Duplicates of licences granted by the Industrial Registrar to clothing trades workers to enable them to work in places other than a factory. Licences were valid for twelve months and indicated the names and addresses of the licensees and of the manufacturers by whom the licensees were employed. Licences are arranged according to the licence number
