Year 1 News Elsewhere in School Year 5/6 had a brilliant weekend away at PGL, trying out zip wires, raft building, giant swings and a very muddly challenge course. Foundation were visited by a travelling farm, complete with sheep, pigs, hens, ducks a goat and even a donkey! Year 5 visited one of our local churches, St Andrew and St George, to learn about the Easter story. The Year 5/6 Athletics team finished in 3rd place in the Stevenage Indoor Athletics Festival. Year 5 were visited by a professional artist, who led felt making workshops. Our Year 5/6 Boys Football team reached the quarter-finals of the Stevenage Cup after a dramatic 3-2 win. We raised over 300 for Comic Relief through our non-uniform day earlier this month. March 2017 What we ve been doing this term... Wow! Pow! This term s topic has been Wow! Pow! We have explored the role of superheroes in stories, films and comics, thinking about the types of powers that they have, the enemies that they fight and the choices they make, always fighting on the side of good and never giving up, even when facing some terrifying dangers. We then created our own superhero identities, selecting our names and powers, and then designing and making costumes that reflected these, with capes, masks and (of course) some very impressive superhero pants! When everything was ready, we finally got to put on our costumes and take on all the challenges of our Superhero Day - you can see lots of pictures of us in action (supported by our parents and special people, who joined us at school) on the next page. You can also read a few examples of the superhero adverts and profiles that we wrote below. In science, meanwhile, we have been looking at humans, learning and naming the different parts of the body and looking at the different senses. We have carried out different experiments using just one of our senses at a time. SUPERSONIC - Frankie Bradbury If you need to be protected call me. I have gold power and am speedy. Here to help! SUPER STAR - Elin Steiner Amazingly, I can fly! If you're in a terrifying situation, call me - Super Star! Powerful - I can fly! No job too big or small. RAINBOW SMASH - Samuel Street Age: 49 Colour of hair: Blue Superpowers: Shoot out rainbows, smash anything, fly Friends; Sun man, Golden Lizard, Golden Prince AWESOME DINO - Tyler Lincoln Age: 5 Colour of hair: Gold Superpowers: I can fly. I can turn invisible, I am super strong. Friends: Machine Mask, Sun Shadow

Superhero Day Year 1 News : March 2017 We finished our topic with a Superhero day. We really enjoyed showing off the costumes we had made to you all. A huge thank you to everyone for coming and participating with the different superhero activities with your children - it was lovely to see so many of you and we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

March 2017 : Year 1 News Computing In ICT we have learnt to make pictograms on the computer. We designed our own tally charts about favourite foods, collected data and displayed it in a pictogram using 2Count software. During history we have also look at the first flight and how planes have developed over the years. We also shared our own experiences of flight.

Stars of the Week -Class 3a- Elin Steiner Sienna Cook Kean Howard English Year 1 News : March 2017 This terms English text has been How Tortoise got his Shell. We have been focussing on using adjectives and time openers within our work. To help us generate some ideas we had a visit from Shorty the tortoise. We have written character and setting descriptions and made our own newspaper report retelling Tortoise's woes. We also turned the classroom into a news studio and had great fun playing the part of the reporter/interviewer and the animals we wanted to question. We also used the I-pads to record our Jungle News. At the end of the unit we have used the story structure to invent our own stories, thinking carefully about the structure and made story plans in preparation for writing our stories. Some of our ideas were amazing and everyone has been impressed with the imagination and variety of stories that have been written. Amy King Tyler Lincoln and Carson Wall using puppets to act out the story Tayla Myall, Carson Wall, Ruby Barr and Theo Hewitt making a news report Amelia Bates Amelia Bates and Matilda Kindell working on grammar Christopher McAllister Millie Manning Marissa Orros and Shyla Landon making a news report Working together to use puppets Shorty the tortoise

March 2017 : Year 1 News Stars of the Week -Class 3b- Mitchell O'Reilly Tayla Myall We began the half-term by exploring a mountain that had appeared outside school, which the tortoise had tried to climb... How Bear got a short tail Once upon a time there lived a good bear that lived by a river in a bunch of tall trees. It had a long tail it tried everything but it didn't shrink his fluffy tail. First he tried cutting it off but that didn't work. Next he tried going into a tumble dryer but that didn't work. After that he tried to get it stuck but that didn't work. Finally he tried biting it off but the next day he went to the river. At the river a crocodile bit his tail short and that is how Bear has a short tail. by Tayla Myall How Hedgehog got his spikes Once upon a time there lived an extremely friendly hedgehog. He lived in a spooky wood. One day hedgehog went outside. He was cold in the cold winter. First he used leaves to get warm. After that hedgehog rolled on the mud but it came off. Finally he rolled on the berry bush. Unfortunately he rolled on the sharp thorns that he could not get out. That is what happened and that is how he got his spikes. by Latoya Paczkowska Marissa Orros Shyane Landon Carson Wall Why Giraffe has a long neck Once upon a time there was an animal called giraffe. The smart giraffe had a tummy ache he ate a juicy mango. He went to see the buzzing bees. Next he ate some honey. His head got stuck in the thin tree. Everyone gathered. First they pulled but he did not come out. Next in the autumn they tried. They pulled and pulled and pulled. POP! Giraffe had an extremely long neck. She can eat leaves off the top of the tree. by Shania Parry

Paper Making Year 1 News : March 2017 We have had a very busy half term and participated in lots of different activities, and we were fortunate enough to have an artist in to teach us how to make our own paper earlier this month. We had great fun mixing the pulp and then squeezing out the water in the frame to make the paper - and we re sure you ll agree it looks pretty spectacular!

March 2017 : Year 1 News Indoor Athletics On the 21st March we went on a trip to the Leisure Centre to take part in an athletics festival organised by Rising Stars. We were mixed into five teams with three other schools and took part in five different activities: relay races, speed jumping, javelin, long jump and chest passing a ball. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and all behaved beautifully throughout the morning.
