The connector bar was intended to fit in the opening at the back of Big Boy. A second pin, which we mark as Tender Car # 2, has the correct size connector bar. Lion Larry considers it to be a variation. It is interesting to note that the American Locomotive Company manufactured 25 Big Boy locomotives for Union Pacific from 1941 to The entire fleet of 25 locomotives would cost over 100 million dollars to build today. The Big Boy with its tender car are only 100 feet shorter than a Boeing 747. We understand that it required 48 hours to fire up the Big Boy before it was ready to pull out of the station on a run.
