1 Where in the colonies is Carmen Sandiego? Intro The object of this quest is to find out which colony Carmen Sandiego is hiding in. She is an international, time-traveling jewel thief. Your detectives have been put on the case. Your job is to find and stop Carmen before she slips away again. Tasks You will have several tasks to complete to find Carmen Sandiego.

2 ! Your first task is to print a copy of two maps. The first map is one of the British colonies. The second map is the colonies with no words. You will need one copy of each. You will find links to each map under resources.! Your second task is to obtain a clue sheet from the chief.! Your third task is to listen carefully to the clues the chief gives you. Each clue will lead you closer to Carmen Sandiego.! Your fourth task is to color each colony that you have already been to. Each time you should use a different color. Remember, Carmen will not go to a colony she has already been to.! Your final task is to figure out where Carmen is. Finish your clue sheet and turn it in to the chief.

3 Procedure Alright detectives. You ll need to track Carmen through all of the colonies to see where she ends up. Listen for the clues that your teacher reads to you. You will have to write down the clue and then find the colony Carmen was last in. Your time is very valuable. If you waste it Carmen will get away. The chief (your teacher) will keep you moving pretty quickly. Listen up and stay sharp. The chase is on. Resources To find a map of the British colonies, click here. 4 of the colonies, one without words. You will need to color each colony a different color as you continue your search for Carmen. After the map appears on your screen, click on file. From the pull down menu, choose print. If more prompts appear, click print on each. If you have trouble ask the chief (teacher) for help. You will need to look at several sites that have information about the colonies. To find a site about the New England colonies click here. For the Middle colonies click here. For the Southern colonies, click here. If you need a chart of when the colonies were founded, and by who, click on the word chart. If you need general information about the colonies, click on the word information. To find out about life in the New England and Southern colonies, as well as a comparison between them, click on the word life.

5 To find out a little about each colonies economics, government, and population, click on the word little. Teacher stuff The first thing you will find is a rubric for this webquest. The second thing you will find is the clue sheets. These are on pages 7 and 8. Each student will need both clue sheets. You should also find the clues pages. The clues pages are 9

6 and 10. The teacher needs a copy of this to read to the students. Rubric The assessment for this webquest is the completed clue sheet. Each student needs to have the clue sheet filled in correctly, with each of the colonies in order. Students who just fill in the final colony should receive a zero for the assignment. In addition there will be a map of the colonies that should be color coded according to the clues. This can be used to help the teacher find where a student or students made their mistake(s).

7 Name Directions: Make sure you write down every clue that leads you to Carmen Sandiego. If you don t write all the clues down Carmen will get away. Keep careful track of which colony she was last in. Remember, Carmen knows you re on her trail and won t go to any colony she has already been to. 9 Clues for the colony chase You are free to use the clues provided or to make your own. For variety the clues given can be mixed up and given in a different order. Clue #1 Carmen was spotted in one of the Southern colonies. She was thinking about changing her name to the name of this colony where General Oglethorpe lived. When you find it color it blue. Clue #2 Carmen then fled to this colony that was founded by the London Company. Color this colony red. Clue #3 Carmen s next stop was in this New England colony that was founded by the Puritans. Leave this colony white. Clue #4 After her stay in the cold north, she headed south again. This time she visited the colony known for growing rice, corn, and livestock. Color this colony brown. Clue #5 - Her next stop on her run through the colonies was in this Dutch settlement. It became an English settlement but started out Dutch. Color this colony purple. Clue #6 Carmen wanted to meet her old friend George Calvert, so she stopped at this colony. Color this colony yellow.

10 Clue #7 Carmen s next stop was at this colony founded for religious freedom. while she s there. She could say hello to Roger Williams Color this colony gray. Clue #8 Carmen thought she could make some money in this Middle colony. That s what the colonists thought too. Too bad the crops grew in other colonies instead of this one. Color this colony black. Clue #9 The next stop for Carmen was this New England colony. She had already seen the Mayflower Compact, so she wanted to see the Exeter Compact. Color this colony pink. Clue #10 She crossed to this southern buffer colony next. Color this colony peach. Clue #11 This colony gave Carmen some Fundamental Orders. Maybe she met the founder. His last name was Hooker. Color this colony gold. Clue #12 Carmen finally made it to the first state. Color this state green. Clue #13 Carmen was last seen in this Quaker settlement founded by a man named William. Color this colony orange.
