1 Lights Out for Birds s in North America One of the simplest ways to reduce mortality from bird collisions is to eliminate the light pollution that draws night-flying migrants into areas where they will encounter glass. Cities across the continent have programs to turn off un-necessary lights during spring and fall migration. These programs take a variety of forms. Some are voluntary, some mandatory, some based in cities, others in states, some are run by NGOs, others by government and still others by a collaboration of public and private entities. There are other benefits to Lights Out programs, besides protecting birds, including protecting other types of wildlife, saving energy, reducing emissions of greenhouse gases, improving human health and simply being able to see the stars. We list a few programs dedicated to these goals at the end of this document.
