We all know that there are many hours of work involved to produce traditional wooden patterns from the drawings, and this in turn makes the cost of traditional pattern making a highly expensive process. This being said however, we have been researching modern pattern making techniues. It has been said that we are living in a society that is de-skilling. While this is very true, it is also true that certain skills are just being altered in the way they are carried out. For those of you who have been following the progress of the UK based LMS Patriot Project, The Unknown Warrior, you will be familiar with their progress on making the patterns for the inside and outside cylinders. If not, then you may be in for an interesting surprise. The patterns for the cylinders of the Patriot have been precision cut out of polystyrene from the 3D drawings supplied to the pattern making firm. According to their website, the total cost of producing these patterns is approximately 11,000. A massive saving compared to traditional methods. So while the art of producing wooden patterns may be a dying art here in Australia, the skills in producing polyester and/or plastic patterns has replaced it in a very accurate way. We will be researching companies that can provide us with these kinds of services so we can lower the cost of pattern making for V499. This can be from large items such as the driving wheels and cylinders, to smaller items such as hand brake wheel, water valves and builders plates. When the cylinder drawings are complete, we shall start to look into uotes for polystyrene pattern.

V499 Water to be Sold at VGR In our last edition of The Compound Chronicle we announced the support of the Victorian Goldfields Railway for the V499 Project.

The first stock of water should arrive at the VGR this month and go on sale at Castlemaine and Maldon stations.

2 V499 Water to be Sold at VGR In our last edition of The Compound Chronicle we announced the support of the Victorian Goldfields Railway for the V499 Project. This has provided us with more strength as an organisation and a good strong relationship is starting to evolve. In April we had a video testimonial produced, featuring VGR president Michael Vines. Michael expressed the railways support for our project. If you have not seen the video, you can find it on our YouTube channel by visiting our website and clicking on Video Gallery. It was also at this period that we approached the railway, asking if they would like to take stock of our V499 water bottles, to which it was decided they would. The first stock of water should arrive at the VGR this month and go on sale at Castlemaine and Maldon stations. This not only increases our project s awareness to the general public, but it also brings in money for both organisations. The VGR has also kindly taken stock of our A5 donation flyer, and this can also be found at both Castlemaine and Maldon stations. Please show your support to a great railway who are supporting us and visit the VGR for a great day out with your family and/or friends. Tender Drawings Nearing Completion Over the past few months, volunteer members of the VSLC have been working away on the drawings for the tender tank of V499. As you may recall, we have the drawings for the Victorian Railway s DD class tender tank which we are modifying to V class reuirements. The drawing up of these plans is starting to near completion, and it is hoped to have this task finished by August. If you are interested in owning a set of these collectors items, please see the attached form at the back of this edition of The Compound Chronicle. We offer three choices of how the plates can be supplied, and each set comes with a signed certificate as well as the edition number stamped onto the plates. Car Batteries Wanted A few editions ago we called out for donations of used car/truck batteries in order to raise further funds for the V499 Project. After that first call out we were supplied with several batteries within a week, more following a short time later. We are very thankful to those who have donated these to us. If you have any batteries that are lying around and need to be disposed of, or know anyone who does, and you wish to donate them to the V499 Project to assist us in raising funds for the locomotive, please us at info@vicsteam.com Donate to V499 Our funds have been increasing over the past twelve months and we are well on our way to achieving our financial goal for the purchase of materials to commence construction of the tender tank. Funds have been coming in from sales of DVDs, the limited edition V499 gun metal plates and also from people donating $5 a week towards the project. If you would like to support us and donate to V499, simply visit our website and click on the PayPal Subscribe button. This will then set up an automated monthly debit from your account. With your further support we can take V499 off the drawing board and into the workshops for construction. Limited Edition Plates Our offer of limited edition V499 plates cast in high uality gun metal has been bringing in some great funds for the project. Recently we sold another set which is being delivered to the happy client this month. We now have 17 sets of plates remaining.
