1 Next Generation of Australian Banknotes Revealing the new $10 design Production of the new $10 has commenced and we have revealed its design today, well in advance of issuance (planned for September this year) to provide sufficient time for training and education. The following material is designed to assist you and your staff prepare for issuance. 1. Key messages and facts to assist in your communication with staff, stakeholders and customers. 2. Australia s banknotes are being upgraded with new security features to ensure they remain secure into the future. All existing banknotes remain legal tender and can continue to be used. Machines that process banknotes may need to be upgraded. Machine users should discuss their requirements with their distributors. Staff should be familiar with the new banknote designs, understand how to check the security features and be equipped to handle questions from the public (see Security feature terminology and Security feature flyer for specific details). The new banknote series retains a number of features from the existing series, namely the colour palette, the size and the people portrayed on the banknotes. They will also continue to be printed on plastic. Each denomination in the new series of banknotes will depict a different species of Australian wattle and a native bird. The new $5 features the Prickly Moses wattle and Eastern Spinebill. The new $10 will feature Bramble wattle and a Sulphur-crested Cockatoo. There is a new tactile feature (raised bumps) on the new banknotes to assist the vision-impaired community. The $5 banknote has one raised bump on each long edge of the banknote next to the top-to-bottom window. The new $10 will have two bumps on each long edge. Their work is recognised in several design elements on the banknote, including images of a pen nib in two of the clear windows and excerpts from their poetry in microprint. The $10 banknote features the Bramble Wattle (Acacia victoriae) and the Sulphur-crested Cockatoo (Cacatua galerita).
