2 DESIGNING THE COMPOSITION

3 4 X 4 6 X 9 OUTLINE TEMPLATE choose soft Mars Carve or denser linoleum 4 X 4 HAS 2 SIDES to design, cut & print (4 x 4 ) or (6 x 9 )

11 COMPOSE ANIMAL Brain Storm with another student before showing me the final design to get your linoleum or Mars Carve.

12 COMPOSE ANIMAL Brain Storm with another student before showing me the final design to get your linoleum or Mars Carve. NOTE the BOLD outline of the bird and how it is separated from the background. Fine lines will not work well as it is easy to over cut or the ink will gunk up in them.

13 HAVE DESIGN APPROVED RECEIVE MARS CARVE OR LINOLEUM TRANSFER DESIGN Secure drawing to linoleum with Masking Tape Flip drawing onto linoleum and rub over the lines until it transfers (pull up a corner to check)

14 Rub the paper to transfer the design. (Notice the image will be backwards on the linoleum.)

15 Lift off paper and color in POSITIVE AREAS if they did not transfer these areas are NOT CUT AWAY!

16 CUT AWAY THE NEGATIVE SPACE NOT THE COLORED AREAS Use the Gouge Tools Safely!

20 Twist to unlock Chuck RIGHTY TIGHTY LEFT LOOSY FLOATING PIECE Make sure the Shaft of the blade is all the way down in the Chuck.

21 Place linoleum block in BENCH HOOK Practice cutting on a scrap piece of linoleum before working on your good piece.

22 When you feel comfortable with the tools place your linoleum block with Animal Composition in the BENCH HOOK.

23 SAFETY FIRST Gouge stop cuts around the image. ALWAYS CUT AWAY FROM YOU and NOT TOWARDS YOUR HAND.

24 ROTATE the linoleum to cut different directions.

25 Make start and stop cuts so you don t over cut. GOUGE out the NEGATIVE SPACE Think texture or pattern and LINE DIRECTION

26 Mis-use of tools will result in a loosing the privilege to use the tools. DO NOT CUT ANYTHING BUT THE LINOLEUM! Complete Gouges and clean up shreds of linoleum.

27 INKING & PRINTING

28 Squeeze out INK onto Inking Plate about what you d put on your toothbrush.

29 Roll out ink with BRAYER to a velvety consistency.

30 Place linoleum block on a paper and Roll a thin layer of ink onto the linoleum.

31 Take linoleum off of the rolling sheet and place it on a CLEAN newspaper or book cover.

32 Select a paper to print on With PENCIL LIGHTLY MARK where the linoleum will be placed on the paper at the corners - Centered Carefully place the linoleum where you want it to be printed.

33 Burnish/Rub over all areas of the block Use fingers or back of spoon Pull up an edge to check the print. Apply additional pressure to any area not receiving the ink.

34 Pull paper off of the block and check it to see if you want to make additional cuts. This is called an ARTIST S PROOF. Place the print on the Drying Rack (in your designated shelf.

35 CLEAN UP All inking plates must be clean, All Brayers (rollers) must be clean. All Prints must be stored.

36 After prints dry sign them following the directions on the example Signing and Numbering your Print always in pencil On the far left side write the edition number (3/10 means 3rd of 10). To the right of the edition number print the title of the image. On the right sign your name and add the date (month/year) 3 /10 Fishy Business Susan West 9/2004

37 PRINTING ASSIGNMENT 2 ARTIST S PROOFS 5 PRINTS in the EDITION Choose color of ink & paper carefully Sign & Numbered all Prints Make 2 or more additional prints and create a work of art in the style of Andy Warhol on a larger paper.
