10 Vol V No 3 Page 10 of 18 1 March, of 43 Lessons from Total Chess by John Herron From the book, TOTAL CHESS: Learn, Teach and Play the Easy Way, by John Herron, copyright 2011, reprinted with permission from the publisher. Midgame Strategy (Beginner Lesson) The midgame is the most complicated and difficult part of a chess game. All of the pieces are in play, and there are complex maneuvers and tactical battles. The game sometimes ends in the midgame. There are three main strategies for playing the midgame. 1) Attack: To win a chess game you must attack. If you hang back and let the opponent do all of the attacking, then you will never win. Sooner or later your defenses will crumble and one of the opponent s attacks will break through and beat you. You must attack to win. Look for weaknesses to attack. It is much easier to attack weaknesses than it is to attack strengths. 2) Defend: Most players like to attack, but do not like to defend. It is more fun and exciting to attack. But you must also defend yourself when the opponent attacks you. If you spend all of your time attacking and no time defending, even a weak attack from the opponent might beat you. You need to balance attacking and defending, and spend some time on each. Sometimes you can do both at the same time, or maybe you can counterattack. 3) Use Tactics: Tactics are the heart of chess. They happen all the time in every game, but mostly in the midgame. You can use tactics in many different ways. One way to use tactics is to win material. When you win material, you have more pieces and more points, and you have a better chance to win the game. You can also use tactics to improve your position or to create weaknesses in the opponent s position. Tactics are divided into eight groups, with three related tactics in each group.

11 Vol V No 3 Page 11 of 18 1 March, 2014 Top 7 Reasons to use Hands-on Learning by Education Specialist Dawn Fox Hands-on learning is advocated by homeschoolers of all types from the Charlotte Mason style to Unschoolers. But why should you use hands-on approaches to learn and to teach? Studies show that using the hands enhances the brain activity in learning. The information is remembered better and students are more actively engaged. Here are seven ways to use Hands-on learning in your daily home school program. #1 It s Fun! Children love doing hands on projects, just ask them (and lots of moms do too!) Hands on activities increases motivation to do school. If you wish your child was more enthusiastic about learning and would pay more attention, then add more projects! #2 A chance to be creative! Working on a project is the best opportunity to let your child show you their creative skills. With guidance and lots of different materials, your child can be free to create original projects that reflect their own insights of the topic being studied. Some parents need to be careful not to squelch the creative aspect of hands-on learning by providing too much structure and overwhelming your child with over planning the project. Let your child use their own drawings and if they don t make it perfectly don t fix it!! Let them shine and experiment! #3 Retention! Through educational research it has been proven that students will have a lasting understanding of what they DO more than what they hear and see. Hands-on projects enhance the kinesthetic learning style and give every child an opportunity to learn the facts deeper of the unit study or curriculum they are Games such as chess offer a great opportunity for families and friends to build cooperation skills as well as a wonderful brain booster activity!! working on. As your child is creating, review with your child WHY they are doing the activity and how the project ties into what they have learned. The project is a perfect opportunity to learn the abstract, conceptual facts that you want them to understand and know. # Accomplishment! There is something so wonde rful for everyone to see a result of something they have completed. The joy in your child s eye as they show their project to their family and teacher are worth the trouble of planning and clean up. # Review! As your child shares their new project with their family or friends they have an opportunity to learn and review the knowledge that they gained by doing the lesson. This review foster s retention and works deeper in the area of comprehension. #6 Cooperation! As your child works with others to complete the project, they are given lots of opportunities to work on cooperation and togetherness as a family and community. Doing hands-on projects creates memories and strong bonds. Games such as chess offer a great opportunity for families and friends to build cooperation skills as well as a wonderful brain booster activity!! #7 All Learning modalities are used! The best part is that every Learning Style is utilized through projects. For every child, whatever their learning style strength is, hands-on projects will meet that style of learning. The auditory will have a chance to hear and speak. The visual will enjoys pictures and written language and the kinesthetic will have so much fun with drawing, painting or building with their hands. Happy Homeschooling!! ~Have Fun with Hands-On Learning!
