No. 25 Boston University (14-3-4) vs. Harvard (12-3-2) patriot league network (patriotleague.tv) - Nick Garrido & Isaiah dicker THE GAME For the second time in program history, the No. 25 Boston University women s soccer team will host a NCAA tournament first round game on Saturday (Nov. 16) when the Terriers welcome Harvard to Nickerson Field. First kick is scheduled for 3 p.m. between the two Boston-based schools. Saturday marks the second time in three years that the Terriers will host the Crimson in the first round of the NCAA tournament. BU defeated Harvard, 3-0, on Nov. 12, 2011, in the first round at Nickerson Field. BU IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT The Terriers are in the NCAA tournament for the 11th time in their 19-year history as a varsity program. BU made 10 appearances, including seven straight from 2005 to 2011, in the NCAA tournament as a member of the America East. This will be the Terriers first NCAA trip as a member of the Patriot League. BU is 3-10 all-time in the NCAAs, having reached the second round in 2000, 2005 and The Terriers first-ever postseason victory occurred in the first round of the 2000 tournament when BU defeated Holy Cross, 1-0. In 2005, the Terriers made it to the second round via a 1-0 overtime win over Northeast rival Connecticut on the Huskies home turf. BU earned a share of the Patriot League regular-season title by going in conference play. The Terriers lone loss in league action was a 1-0 defeat at Navy on Sept. 20. As the No. 2 seed in the Patriot League Tournament, BU battled to a 0-0 draw with No. 3 Colgate in the semifinals, but advanced to the championship game on penalty kicks, 4-1. BU defeated No. 1 Navy, 1-0, in the championship game to claim its first Patriot League title. It was the Terriers 10th conference crown after BU claimed nine America East titles prior to joining the Patriot League on July 1, The Terriers have posted 14 shutouts on the season, the most since they blanked 15 opponents in SCOUTING THE CRIMSON Harvard (12-3-2), the Ivy League Champion, is making its 14th NCAA tournament appearance and first since The Crimson enters the tournament riding a 14-game unbeaten streak, the longest in program history. Harvard posted a perfect mark in Ivy League action. Freshman Margaret Purce leads the Crimson with an scoring line while senior Elizabeth Weisman is second on the team with six goals and a pair of assists for 14 points. Senior Peyton Johnson leads the team with six assists. Freshman Lizzie Durack and junior Cheta Emba have split the time in net for the Crimson. Both have appeared in 12 games. SERIES HISTORY Saturday will be the 17th all-time meeting between BU and Harvard and second time the teams will meet in the NCAA tournament. The Crimson hold a slight edge in the all-time series, although the last two meetings between BU and Harvard have ended in draws. The Terriers are in their last six meetings with the Crimson. Earlier this season, the Terriers and the Crimson battled to a 1-1 draw on Oct. 8, at Nickerson Field. Senior Megan McGoldrick scored the lone goal for the Terriers while Margaret Purce netted a goal for the Crimson. It was the only opponent goal BU allowed at Nickerson Field all season. BU s last win against the Crimson occurred in the first round of the 2011 NCAA tournament, a 3-0 victory for the Terriers. Current senior Kylie Strom and current junior Ana Cuffia found the back of the net for BU while the Terriers also benefitted from a Harvard own goal. Harvard last defeated BU on Sept. 14, 2007, by a 1-0 score in double overtime. PATRIOT LEAGUE HONORS Head coach Nancy Feldman was named Patriot League Coach of the Year. Feldman was a ninetime Coach of the Year honoree during BU s time in the America East and has now won the accolade in five of the last six seasons. Freshman Erica Kosienski was named Patriot League Rookie of the Year after finishing the regular season tied for the team lead with 13 points (6g, 1a). Kosienski scored BU s game-winning goal in the Patriot League Championship to up her season total to seven goals, the most goals by a BU freshman since Farrell McClernon recorded seven tallies during her rookie campaign in The Terriers led the Patriot League with nine All-League honorees. Seniors Emma Clark and Madison Clemens, along with junior Kai Miller earned First Team accolades. BU placed four on the All-League Second Team including Kosienski, senior Andrea Green, senior Kylie Strom and sophomore McKenzie Hollenbaugh. Seniors Megan McGoldrick and Erin Mullen were named to the All-League Third Team. HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE The Terriers were unbeaten (8-0-2) when playing on Nickerson Field this season. BU only allowed one opponent goal on its home turf, a strike by Harvard s Margaret Purce in the Terriers 1-1 draw with the Crimson on Oct. 8. The mark is the Terriers best record at home since BU went undefeated (13-0-0) at Nickerson Field during the 2011 season. SENIOR SENSATIONS The Terriers eight-member senior class owns a overall record entering Saturday s game and posted a remarkable mark in conference games. BU IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS TEAM 2nd in GAA Average (0.319) 3rd in Shutout Percentage (0.714) 11th in Save Percentage (0.870) 29th in Won-Lost-Tied Percentage (0.762) INDIVIDUAL Andrea Green : 1st in GAA (0.264) Andrea Green: 9th in Save Percentage (0.884) CLIMBING THE RANKS Senior Madison Clemens 20 career goals are tied for ninth all-time in program history. Senior Kylie Strom ranks seventh all-time with 16 career assists. Clemens and Strom are tied for 13th all-time in program history with 42 career points each. Strom boasts a stat line while Clemens line reads Senior Andrea Green s 0.26 goals against average is the top mark ever for a Terrier while her career average of 0.55 is second in team history. Green 11.3 shutouts this season are the secondmost in a single season in BU history while her 18.4 career shutouts rank fifth all-time. Green is also seventh all-time with 102 career saves. BALANCED ATTACK BU boasts 12 players with at least one point recorded so far this season. 10 different Terriers have found the back of the net. Freshman Erica Kosienski leads the team with seven goals while senior Madison Clemens is right behind her with six tallies. Senior Megan McGoldrick and sophomore Jenna Fisher are tied for the team lead with three assists each. HEAD COACH NANCY FELDMAN Head coach Nancy Feldman is the only coach in the program s 19-year history as a varsity sport. Feldman led the Terriers to nine America East titles before BU moved to the Patriot League in July In her first season coaching in the Patriot League, she guided the Terriers to the conference title. Feldman owns a record at BU, including a mark against conference opponents. She became the 12th NCAA head coach with at least 10 years at the Division I level to reach the 300-win milestone early in the 2011 season. Feldman also spent time as a coach at Plymouth State and Lake Forest College. Feldman has coached eight All-Americans and eight former student-athletes have been drafted or played in a professional soccer league. The Terriers have won at least 10 regular-season games in 18 of her 19 seasons. Under Feldman, the Terriers have boasted 74 All-Conference honorees in the last 10 years and 43 All-Region honorees in the last 15 years. LOOKING AHEAD The winner of Saturday s game will advance to the second round of the NCAA tournament and face either fourth-seeded and West Coast Conference champion Santa Clara (14-4-1) or California ( ) in the second round on Friday, Nov. 22.
