Carolina opened the season ranked No. 1 in the NFHCA National Coaches Poll and has been in the top five all season. Senior Julia Young was named the 2016 ACC Defensive Player of the Year. She s the third Tar Heel to win. The other two (Rachel Dawson and Caitlin Van Sickle) represented the U.S. in Rio last summer. Young was the NFHCA National Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 28. Five Tar Heels earned 2016 All-ACC Honors, including all three who serve as part of the captains group. Team captain Julia Young and vice captains Emma Bozek and Lauren Moyer, all seniors, were named to the first team. Sophomores Malin Evert and Eva van t Hoog were named to the second team. Emma Bozek is one of 38 seniors selected for the Victory Sports Tours/NFHCA Division I Senior Game. However, since UNC reached the final four as a team, she will not compete in the game. UNC s 82 goals this season have come from 14 different players. Eight of those players didn t score a single goal last season. Senior Lauren Moyer leads UNC in goals this season with 22, more than double her career total coming into the season (10). The ACC quarterfinals win over Louisville was the first hat trick of her UNC career. The Tar Heels beat the nation s No. 1 and No. 2 teams in back-to-back games in September, defeating top-ranked Syracuse 3-2 in double overtime on Sept. 23 and second-ranked Duke 3-2 on Sept. 25. Both of those games were played in Chapel Hill. Five current Tar Heels were named to the U.S. Under-21 National team that will play in the Junior World Cup in Chile Nov. 24-Dec. 4. UNC is in the field for the 14th year in a row. The Tar Heels opened NCAA Tournament play on the road for the first time since That year, UNC played first and second round games in Winston-Salem, N.C., then returned there for the final four and won the program s sixth and most recent NCAA title. In 2016, Carolina opened on College Park, Md., defeating Stanford in the first round and host Maryland in the second, both 3-0. Carolina vs. Connecticut UNC leads the series against Connecticut 8-3. The teams last met in the 2013 NCAA semifinal game, which the Huskies won 2-1 in a penalty shootout. That matchup was also in Norfolk. The teams have a 2-2 record in NCAA play. UNC s last postseason win over the Huskies was in 2011, when the teams battled to a second overtime before the Tar Heels earned a 4-3 victory in Louisville. Carolina trailed 3-0 before rallying to tie the game with three goals in the final 13 minutes of regulation, including the equalizer with 23 seconds on the clock. The Tar Heels advanced to the title game but lost in overtime to Maryland. The last regular-season meeting was on Sept. 28, 2014, when UNC won 2-1 in a neutral-site game played at Boston College. Hill Sports Complex, where the No. 3 Tar Heels

3 fell to No. 4 Connecticut 2-1 after a penalty shootout. The score remained tied at 1-1 through two 15-minute overtime periods, sending the game into the shootout tie-breaker. In the backand-forth, best-of-five series, UConn made two of its first four shots, and when UNC missed its fourth the game was over. We want to congratulate the University of Connecticut for advancing to the national championship game, said UNC coach Karen Shelton, who led the Tar Heels to the final four for the 18th time in her 33 seasons with the program. It was a gutsy performance on their part and even thought we re hugely disappointed, we re happy for their players and coaching staff. It was a game that was a little bit back-and-forth and, of course, grueling - two overtime periods are tough and to lose in a shootout is heartbreaking, but it s part of the game. I m disappointed but happy for UConn. UNC finishes its season 18-6 after reaching the final four for the fifth consecutive year and the sixth time in the past seven. The Tar Heels last won the title in 2009 and had reached the championship game but finished as the runner-up in each of the past three years. Friday s matchup was the second meeting between the Tar Heels and Huskies at Old Dominion s home field in less than a month. Just as in the first matchup, which UNC won 2-1 on Oct. 26 in a regular-season, neutral-site matchup, Connecticut scored first and led 1-0 at halftime. The Huskies got on the board in the fifth minute of play on their first corner of the game. Marie Elena Bolles scored the goal, on a pass from Roisin Upton. UConn held the lead until the 44th minute, when Carolina tied it up. Tar Heel junior Charlotte Craddock dribbled into the circle and when UConn keeper Sarah Mansfield came out to play the ball, Craddock carried the ball to the left side of the cage and sent it behind the keeper to the right corner of the goal for her 13th goal of the year. The game stayed knotted at 1-1 through the rest of regulation. Although the Tar Heels led 7-0 in shots in the second half, they were unable to pick up another goal. In the seven-on-seven overtime periods, it was Connecticut that created more opportunities. The Huskies has three shots and a corner in the first period, and five shots and a corner in the second, while UNC didn t have a shot or corner in either period. In the shootout, Connecticut went first and UNC keeper Sassi Ammer stopped the shot by Upton. But Mansfield stopped Casey Di Nardo s shot and UConn s Anne Jeute then made hers to give UConn a 1-0 lead. Next up for UNC were Emily Wold and Loren Shealy, neither of whom was able to score. Ammer stopped a shot by Bolles, but Chrissy Davidson was able to make hers, putting UConn ahead 2-0. Emma Bozek went fourth and when she was unable to score the Tar Heels were two down with only one shooter remaining, ending the game.
