1 National Literacy and Numeracy Week 2008 Project Report Project title: The Domino Effect Project description: Maths Homework bags were produced and supplied to every family. The project began during Education Week and was completed during NLNW. Students were taught games in class as part of maths lessons and given materials to play games with all family members to consolidate maths concepts as well as promote family interaction and social skills. Parents were invited to school to learn about the maths games, help make bags, etc to hold the games and activities and learn how to play the games. During Education Week and NLNW, parents attended school and participated in class tabloids. Games are provided each week with the newsletter to add to the number of games in the family. Person responsible for project: Nicole Wotherspoon Brown School, region, diocese: Biraban Public School, Hunter Central Coast Region Contact person s nicole.wotherspoon brown@education.nsw.gov.au Number of students, teachers, parents, other community members directly involved: 160 students 15 teachers at school and 1 in pre school 70 parents at the school over the project Based on feedback from parents, 60% of parents have played games at home Through the community centre, 7 agencies have been involved (govt and non govt) and know about the strategy (not actual participants). Evidence of achievement of intended literacy and/or numeracy outcomes: Participation rates during school at 100% with engagement and fun 60% participation rates families at home Teacher reports deeper understandings of maths concepts.

3 The contents of this pack are a sample of the activities from the Numeracy Activities at Home project, a HCC home/school/community partnership initiative. We hope you enjoy them at home. 4 Examples of games: Numeracy Activities at Home Bingo!! Number of players: Minimum three (3) Resources: Deck of cards (minus the Jokers) Aim: To be the first player to turn five (5) cards face-down. Rules: 1. Shuffle the cards and deal five (5) cards, one at a time, to each player. One player is nominated as the caller. 2. Players place their cards face-up in front of them. 3. The caller goes through the pack, one at a time, calling out the number (face value) of each card. 4. The player who has a card of the same value as the called card turns the card face-down. 5. The player to have all their cards turned face-down says Bingo and wins the round. 6. All the cards are shuffled and five (5) new cards dealt to each player. 7. The player who wins the most rounds, wins the game.

5 Numeracy Activities at Home Number of Players: Minimum two (2) Resources: Deck of cards (minus the Jokers) Fish Aim: To collect sets of four (4) cards of the same rank. Rules: 1. If three to six people are playing, they are dealt five (5) cards each. With two Players, seven (7) cards are dealt to each Player. All remaining cards are placed face down in a pile (draw pile) between the Players. Choose a Player to have the first turn. Players should take turns in having the first turn. 2. Player 1 asks the Player on their left for a specific card. For example: "Player 2, please give me your 9s." Player 1 must already hold at least one of the requested cards. If the other Player has any requested cards, they must give all the requested cards to Player 1. In the example, Player 2 would have to give Player 1 all their 9s. If Player 1 gets one or more cards from Player 2, Player 1 has another turn. Player 1 may ask for any card they already hold. If Player 2 has no relevant cards, they say, "Go fish." Player 1 then picks up the top card from draw pile. If Player 1 picks up a card of the rank requested, they show it to the other Players and have another turn. However, if Player 1 draws a card that's not the rank requested, it is the next player s turn. Player 1 keeps the drawn card. The "next player" to have a turn is the one who said "Go fish." 4. When a Player collects a set of four cards of the same rank, they show the set to the other Players and place the four cards face down in front of them. 5. The game continues until either someone has no cards left in their hand or the draw pile runs out. The winner is the Player who then has the most sets of four.
