1 Movement Library Jeff Smith s Individual, Pairs & Teams programs Pairs,Teams and Individual Scorers have a similar method for entering and maintaining User Movements. As an example, I will use PairsScorer to add the Farrington Movement on Pages Table No N-S E-W Boards There are 22 boards in play, 11 rounds. Pairs numbered higher than 11 remain at the same table throughout. In practice, I may arrowswitch pairs 12 & 13 in rounds 6-11 (Tables 1, 5 and 6). The complete Table Card Set is included for reference at the end of this Document. 1. Start PairsScorer 2. From the Main Menu select Movement Library. 3 Then select Movement Details Tab. When this screen appears you should define your new Movement Name on the top row. Precede with a Ref in square brackets to allow a description linkage later. ) Enter the movement data in the boxes provided. (See note later on Pairs Movement Type)

2 4. Enter the Table Card details. When you have entered the last table card, click on Add New User Movement. Reply Yes to Confirm. Go back to List of Movements tab and the movement will now appear in the Current Movements list Note the N in the Sys column. This shows that it is a user-defined movement, not supplied with the program. This type of movement is stored in the Program folder, in a text file called PSUserMovements.txt. This file is not altered when the program is updated. It can also be copied from one computer to another or additional movements cut & pasted from one to the other, provided you maintain the format of the original. (Don t do this without making a backup copy of the originals just in case!!)

3 6 Additional Details System movements are held in PSMovements.txt User Movements are held in PSUser Movements.txt You can also add a description to the movement which will be held in PSUserManual.txt To utilise this description, you must precede the Movement Name with a Ref in square brackets eg [F53]. Retrieve the movement and select the New Movement Description Tab. Add the description. Revert to New Movement Tab and click Add New User Movement to add this description Use the Describe Movement to read the Description on the Current Movements screen Special Note on Pairs Movements The type must be set as Howell, Mitchell or Switched Mitchell. This determines the allowable Pair Number that you are allowed to enter in the Movement. Howell is a 1 Winner Event (Pair 1 v Pair 1 not allowed) Mitchell is a 2 Winner Event (Pair 1 v Pair 1 allowed) Switched is a 1 winner Event (Pair 1 v Pair 1 not allowed, original start pair NS v NS or EW v EW not allowed) For this reason, the Hesitation Mitchells and Hesitation Bowman are defined as Howells because they are 1 winner events where original start pair NS's or EWs play one another (at the swivel table). (Furthermore, an EW Add is not allowed in a normal Howell (since you could duplicate Pair Numbers and not be able to distinguish).

4 Editing Movements Manually This assumes familiarity with editing text files! The Movements are held in Files: PSMovements.tx t Standard PSUserMovements.txt User A recommended set of standard club Movements is distributed in PSClubMovements.txt You can copy this into the User File if you want to use the recommended movements. Teams TSMovements.txt Standard TSUserMovements.txt User Individual ISMovements.tx t Standard ISUserMovements.txt User Internally, within each program there is a Movement Type of: Pairs 0 Howell - pairs may play in any direction against any pair. 1 - Mitchell - pairs retain their direction throughout 2 - Switched Mitchell - pairs may Arrow switch Teams 5 - American Whist 6 - Score Break 7 - Stagger though it has no practical use (always 5) Individual 3-1-winner 4-4-winner The Movement Type in Pairs has implications in terms of: Listing Names as either NS or EW numbers or as plain numbers, In checking that a new entered movement is valid according to the Movement criteria above In whether its a one or two winner movement In determining the output display The Switched Mitchell is a subset of the Howell Movement (i.e. it is a one winner but the arrowswitch determines which pairs can play) so you can use the Type = 0 even though the actual movement happens to be this specific subset. Technically, if its a switched mitchell it should be 2 but the only impact would be if you printed the names list where for a Howell it would be plain numbers, for a Switched Mitchell it would be NS then EW names. You can turn a Mitchell into a Switched Mitchell of course, but that would make it always one winner even with no arrowswitches. This is applicable if the club has small numbers of tables and always wants single winner. Movements are in comma separated files. 5 In an Individual, The combination of Tables and Players indicate the Missing Players (assumed to be highest numbered) The rest of the Movement is laid out as a Table Card: (As Manning but he uses A,B,C rather than 1,2,3 etc as the sets ) Table 1: NS, EW, Set, NS, EW, Set, Table n: NS, EW, Set, NS, EW, Set,... You can thus generate movement files easily from Spreadsheets. As an example, this is from the Individual Movements.
