1 INTRODUCTION TO CHALLONGE First, register for a free account on the Challonge website at These step-by-step directions will guide you through the process of setting up the qualifying rounds of a tournament. They are paired with Challonge Screens that have been marked-up with helpful notes in YELLOW. 1. Click the Create a Tournament Button (see Challonge Screen 01) Challonge Screen Basic Info (see Challonge Screen 02) Tournament name: Supply the name of your tournament, e.g. Northwest Mixed Triples, etc. URL: this will fill automatically Description: Optional, you may describe the tournament if you wish, e.g. Regional, Mixed Triples, etc. 3. Game Info (see Challonge Screen 02) Game: Petanque Type: Single Stage Tournament Format: Swiss Fill in: 13 Points per match win 0 for everything else we prefer to add in byes manually and we ll explain how later Challonge Screen 02 1

Registration (see Challonge Screen 03) Registration: Check the box that says "Provide a list of participants" Registration fee: Free (we ve kept it simple and use our own sign-up sheet, not their on-line version) Participants: Leave these unchecked since you are in charge of the sign-up offline, you manage the number of participants 4. Advanced Options: Bracket, Tie Breaks, Permissions, Notifications (see Challonge Screen 03) Bracket Tab (see Challonge Screen 03): Leave all three boxes unchecked In order to prevent top competitors from meeting in early rounds, opt to Place participants in the bracket using Traditional Seeding Rules Tie Breaks Tab (see Challonge Screen 04) Rank by: Swiss system points (auto fills) Tie Break #1: Match Wins Tie Break #2: Median-Buchholz System Tie Break #3: Points Difference Challonge Screen 03 Challonge Screen 04 2

4 Adding Participants (see Challonge Screens 07, 08 & 09) The next screen will invite you to add your participants Click on the words add participants, which will open two options for entering names: individually or in bulk You can add entrants one by one using the fields Display Name and (optionally) Username or Or, you can add your participants on separate lines in the bulk field in the case of bulk entries, s are entered after the name on the same line following a comma Challonge Screen 07 Challonge Screen 08 Challonge Screen 09 4

5 Adding a Bye (see Challonge Screen 10 ) If you have an odd number of participants, you will need to add a bye in order to achieve an even number of teams for each round of play By adding a fictitious player named "Bye" you will be able to randomize "Bye's" participation "Bye" never wins, but always scores 7, while the opponent always scores 13 You may observe "Bye" at the bottom of the entrant list in Challonge Screens 9 & 10 Completed List (see Challonge Screen 10) Once all the participants have been entered, you can use the Shuffle Seeds button to randomize the participants in the brackets for game one. Challonge Screen 10 Shuffle Seeds (see Challonge Screen 11) After you click the "Shuffle Seeds" button, a pop-up box will ask you to confirm that you want to Continue with seed shuffling? Click "OK." Then click on "Bracket" to see the first round pairings Challonge Screen 11 5

6 Choose The Number Of Rounds For The Tournament (see Challonge Screen 12) In the Bracket view below the menu bar, but above the pairings, you will find three boxes. In the first box is the orange "Start the Tournament" button. In the middle box you will chose the number of rounds for your tournament from a drop-down list. Start the Tournament (see Challonge Screen 13) Still in the Bracket view, click the "Start the Tournament" button and let the games begin. Challonge Screen 12 Challonge Screen 13 Scoring (see Challonge Screens 14 & 15) Once play has begun, you will notice a pencil icon has appeared on the right side of each pairing as participants report their scores, click on the pencil to open a pop-up score box Enter the scores, remembering to always give "Bye" a 7 and the opponent 13 Confirm the winner is highlighted in orange Submit the score Challonge Screen 14 6

7 Challonge Screen 15 Succeeding Rounds and Standings (see Challonge Screen 16) Continue entering scores in the same fashion When the last score for the round is entered, the pairings for the next round will automatically populate If you wish to check standings at any time, you can either click on the Standings tab on the menu bar at the top of the screen, or simply scroll down past the last game where the standings are situated. Return to the brackets by scrolling back up Challonge Screen 16 7

8 Ending the Tournament (see Challonge Screen 17) After your final end, review your results and your standings to make sure there are no clerical errors When you are satisfied your results are accurate, click the "End the Tournament" button Challonge will end the tournament and post your final results Final Results (see Challonge Screen 18) The Final Results page will give you the names of your Gold, Silver, and Bronze winners Challonge will keep a record of the tournament for your future reference Challonge Screen 17 Challonge Screen 18 Challonge in Qualification Rounds For our purposes, Challonge is only used for the qualification rounds. It will generate a ranking based on the results of the qualification round. The tournament director will then need to manually set up the brackets for the concours and consolante using those rankings. 8
