4 1. READING 1.1. Read the text. Charles Dickens ( ) Dickens was born in Portsmouth where his father was a naval clerk. The family moved to Chatham in 1817 and later to London. His childhood was darkened with financial troubles and he had little formal education. He began writing newspaper articles and sketches under the pen name Boz followed by plays, stories and fifteen novels, which established him as the most published after Shakespeare. In 1836, he married Catherine Hogarth and they had ten children before separating in He died suddenly at Gad s Hill Place. He is buried in Westminster Abbey. Oliver Twist is Dickens second novel. Oliver s story is set in the underworld of poverty and criminality which existed in early Victorian London. The book drew attention to the dreadful conditions which so many of London s poor lived. Oliver Twist was written at 48 Doughty Street, his London residence from 1837 to David Copperfield is one of Dickens great books. He wrote of it Of all my books, I like this best. But like many fond parents I have in my heart of hearts a favourite child, and his name is David Copperfield. It has sometimes been called Dickens autobiography. His novel, Great Expectations, was considered by many to be his best. Dickens originally intended Pip to be unmarried but was persuaded to give the story a happier ending. Much of Great Expectations was set in and around Rochester. For sentences 1-4 decide if each statement is true or false and put a tick ( ) in the appropriate box. True 0. 5 1.2. Read the text and choose one of the answers for each of the questions. Animal Snap Animal Snap is a children card game, which has a simple set of rules. If you want to play the game, you just need a pack of 52 cards and you can play it with any number of people. Players sit in a circle facing each other. Before the game starts, each player has to choose the sound of an animal (a dog, a horse, a cock, a cat, a cow...). The oldest player is the dealer. The dealer deals the cards face down to each player until all the cards have been dealt. Players do not look at their cards and hold them face down. The people start putting the cards on the table. The player to the left of the dealer goes first. When all the players put the cards on the table, they are face up and everypikëy can see them. This is where the fun begins. When the same two cards are put down on top of each other (two fives for example, or two Kings) everypikëy has to make their animal sound. The first person who makes the noise picks up the cards.
