4 BC ACCEPTED LIGHTS (CONSUMER) The program accepts household quantities of all types of lights (bulbs and tubes) for recycling without charge at collection sites designated for consumers: Fluorescent tubes (straight, curved, U, circular, square etc.) UV and germicidal lamps Incandescent and halogen bulbs Compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) Light emitting diodes (LEDs) Ultra High Performance (UHP) lamps (replacement projector lamps) High-intensity discharge lamps (HIDs) See the following pages for detailed definitions and pictures for each category. MAXIMUM RETURN LIMIT: Maximum limit for return at one time in the consumer collection system is a total of 16 fluorescent tubes and a total of 16 other bulb types (i.e. any combination of CFL, HID etc. to a total of 16). LARGE VOLUME GENERATORS: The LightRecycle program includes a separate collection system for large volume generators, such as contractors, businesses, relampers, schools, hospitals and building managers, with lighting products used in institutional, commercial and industrial applications for recycling. Fluorescent Tubes Straight/Linear Includes all diameters and light outputs in a curved/circular configuration (curved, square, U, etc.). Fluorescent Tubes Curved/Circular UV or germicidal lamps of all shapes and sizes. All base types including pin-type, screw-in, etc. UV and Germicidal Lamps Fluorescent bulbs that are typically similar in size and intended to replace an incandescent (traditional) light bulb. All base types including pin-type, screw-in, etc. Light Emitting Diodes (LED) Replacement lamps designed for commercial projection systems, home theatre projectors, MD-PTVs and video walls. Often housed within a metal casing. Ultra High Performance (UHP) / Mercury Arc Lamps Includes all HID technologies, such as high pressure sodium, low pressure sodium, mercury vapour and metal halide. These lamps vary in size but are much larger than a typical bulb. In some cases, they can be as big, or bigger, than a football. 7 BC ACCEPTED LIGHTING FIXTURES/ PRODUCTS (CONSUMER) The program accepts household quantities of lighting fixtures and products, ranging from flashlights to Christmas light strings, table lamps, wall fixtures and chandeliers. See the following pages for pictures of all accepted lighting fixtures/products. MAXIMUM RETURN LIMIT: Maximum limit for return at one time in the consumer collection system is generally five (5) fixtures, though some collection sites may be able to accept higher volumes. If you have more than 5 units that were used in a residential setting to recycle at one time, please call ahead to the collection site or contact Product Care Association. NOTE: Not all collection sites that accept consumer quantities of lights (bulbs and tubes) can also accept lighting fixtures. Refer to the Find a Depot page for more information. 33 EXCLUDED ITEMS The following types of products are not classified as a fixture and will not be levied fees: LIGHT CONTAINING PRODUCTS: Products containing lights with a primary purpose that is not to illuminate or assist in the illumination of space are outside the scope of this program, including, but not limited to: Products covered by other schedules of the BC Recycling Regulation and for management in other product stewardship programs in BC. Examples include large appliances, small appliances, medical equipment and electronic products. Products containing lights with a primary purpose of signaling or displaying information. See below for detailed examples. AERONAUTICAL, MARINE AND AUTO FIXTURES: Fixtures designed to be integrated into an airplane, boat, automobile or other means of transportation are excluded from this program. These are defined as light-sources that are integrated into a protective lens and/or housing and designed to function as stand-alone or replacement lighting products for automotive, marine or aeronautical purposes. Examples include headlights with a built in protective lens or housing designed to be integrated into an automobile, decorative lights, accessory lights, safety lights, trailer lights, tail lights, identification lights etc. Note: Replacement automotive bulbs that do not include a protective lens or housing that collectively functions as a complete fixture or headlight are included in the program. 34 EXCLUDED ITEMS: EXAMPLES The following list is of examples of excluded light containing products that are not classified as a fixture: 1. Alarms, phones etc. for the visually impaired 2. Aquarium equipment 3. Auto fixtures 4. Back lit signs 5. Bathroom/ventilation fans 6. Black light equipment 7. Bug zapper 8. Camera and video accessories 9. Electronic billboards 10. Equipment to heat food 11. Equipment to warm animals (brooder fixtures etc.) 12. Exit Signs (without light heads) 13. Fencing (with integrated lights) 14. Fountains (with integrated lights) 15. Garlands (with integrated lights) 16. Laser pointers 17. Lava lamps 18. Light up shoes, hats, collars, clothes etc. 19. Marine/aeronautical fixtures 20. Mirror ball lights 21. Neon signs 22. Plasma ball 23. Propane and gas powered lights 24. Signaling equipment - traffic lights, railway lights 25. Strobe lights 26. Sunshine simulator 27. Trees (artificial, with integrated lights) 28. Medical, dental, veterinarian lighting equipment 29. Sculptures and statues (decorative) with one or more integrated lights where the primary purpose of the product is decorative and the contained lights are designed to light the decoration itself and not to illuminate surrounding space 30. Tanning beds 31. Umbrellas with integrated lights 32. Vanity mirrors with lights 33. Watches 34. Holiday decorations (other than string lights), such as jack-o-lanterns, decorative sculptures (see above) and plastic Santas 35. Horticultural lighting fixtures (greenhouse or grow lamp fixtures) Please note that replacement lights sold or returned separately from an excluded product are classified as lights and included in the program.
