3 Introduction How this book came about is pretty funny. Funny in that damn you Universe kind of way. You might know that for the last 10 months {as of when I m writing this} I have been out of the witchcraft scene publicly. In January 2013, after 7 years of working publicly as a witch in some capacity I decided it was time to go on sabbatical in a sense. I didn t know if it would be a year or five years, but I needed a break and I needed time to gather my thoughts. I also needed time to get back to my spiritual journey as opposed to my spellworking journey, which for all intents and purposes I was kind of over. I wasn t working magic in a ritual sense much anymore and was focusing more on meditation, intention, mindfulness, gratitude, and mindset shifts. Inner magic, as I see it. And yes, like the Aries I am I had to make a spectacle of the whole deal. I kind of had a tantrum and quit Modern Witch, closed up my Etsy shop a bit after Samhain 2012, and even sold off a quarter of my witchy book collection. After 5 or so years of being known only as Rowan Pendragon to most people I dropped my witch name and went back to using my actual name. I moved back out to San Diego {again!} leaving a year of mixed emotions in Salem, MA behind. I really was feeling like I needed to find myself again. Then as October was approaching, almost a year from when all of this started to change, I started to feel a werid pull. A need to go home, spiritually speaking. Or rather, magically speaking. I have been a practicing witch since I was 13 years old. I started studying when I was 11, starting actually practicing when I was 13. As of today I m 38 years old. You do the math...that a shit load of years as a witch! It s hard to really turn your back on that. Once a witch, always a witch; that s the lesson the 3

4 Universe has taught me. Which is kind of funny because I have been teaching my own students that for years. I always say be sure this is what you want because once you open this door it can never be closed. In fact it was April of 2012, sitting in the former store location of The Cat, The Crow & The Crown, Laurie Cabot s former shop, that I heard those very words from Laurie herself. But at the time I had the yup, I know that response to hearing her talk about. I knew it but I didn t know it. Not yet anyway. Now I do. Make no mistake, I m beyond grateful to the Gods and the Universe for sending me off on a year of studying metaphysics, Buddhism, New Thought, and other new age based belief systems. I have brought all of that back to my Craft practice in a way that has helped fill many gaps that are missing from a lot of the Craft-based teaching out there today. It makes me excited to think of what I can now share with others who really want to turn magic and metaphysics into a useful, life changing tool! I m getting off track...this book you ve got here. This wasn t a planned thing. In fact this was written in a 24 hour, horror movie, dark ambient music and caffeine fueled fever {it gets me in the mood}. For whatever reason I HAD to do it, so I did. And it all started because I bought some skull candles at Target, of all places. Target has become my second go-to Halloween shopping stop. Michael s Arts and Crafts is my first, then Target. This year Target has been hit of miss. Michael's was even worse because by the second week of October they were cleaned out of the good stuff and Christmas was now taking over what was just covered in skulls and Halloween gear less than 7 days earlier. Though on a random trip to Target where my intention was to get Halloween presents for my godsons {which I did manage to accomplish} I wondered through the Halloween section for a final time of the season and noticed they had black skull candles! 4

5 The candles that started this whole thing... Skull candles are one of my favorite tools to use in magic. I m a bonafide candle magic addict. It was the first kind of magic I learned, along with some very basic hoodoo and folk magick when I was 11. It s my goto kind of magic for pretty much everything. Skulls are great for influencing people s thoughts, including your own. After getting my candles home and preparing to wrap them up to store away until they might come in handy I snapped a pick and tossed it up on Instagram and Facebook, letting everyone know to get down to Target and get your $5 skull candles while also commenting that if you didn t know how to use them for magic to just ask me and I d be happy to share some spells. I started getting messages, s, and private tweets right away asking for info. So I thought why not sit down and accomplish two things: Share with you my love of magic, especially skull candle magic, and also spend some time back in the world of witchery that I have been away from for so long! 6 About Skulls and Skull Candles Skulls freak some people out. I understand that. They often force people to confront two things they rarely ever enjoy dealing with - death and their mortality. Skulls get a bad reputation mostly for the same reason lots of dark or esoteric things, people just plain don t understand what they re all about, what they symbolize, and how powerful they can be. If you think about things you ve seen in movies or read in stories about possessing someone s skull you ll get an idea of what it can mean and the power it can hold. It was believed that the skull held within it the wisdom, knowledge, and power of the person it belonged to. To have the skull of someone who was wise and powerful meant that one could tap into that knowledge. Many spiritual traditions around the world have long honored the skull as a symbol of humanity and death as well as wisdom. When you look at deities like Kali and Shiva, both who are seen wearing and possessing skulls, they take on a little more of a sacred meaning for some people. In magic skulls are used for a bunch of different things, but ultimately they can be used for almost anything when it comes to influencing the mind and thoughts of someone. They can be used to do work for yourself or for someone else. Depending on your ethical bend you can also use them for more nefarious purposes including hexing, causing confusion, illness, and even death. I m only going to mention magical ethics once here because I firmly believe that the decision of what kind of magic to work is up to the individual. All I ll say is that there is a measure of action and reaction and the Universe does it s job to keep a balance. When you work harm against someone, whatever your reason and intention, you need to be willing to accept the possible consequences. If you can t, don t do the work. 6

7 Picking and Using a Skull Candle Skull candles come in almost every color your can imagine, but traditionally in magic the most used colors are white, black, red, and green. Pick one in a color most appropriate for your needs and intention. White - used for healing, blessings, protection and cleansing Black - also used for protection as well as banishing, binding, and cursing Red - used for love, lust, passion, strength, health and vitality Green - used for money, prosperity, abundance, luck, and health As you can see healing is a big thing here with three of the four serving a health and healing purpose. But each color carries a different vibration when it comes to healing. White - for healing the spirit, healing emotional and mental issues Red - for healing sexual concerns and gaining more energy and vitality Green - for healing the physical body in all ways White is also a pretty special color to work with since it can be used for anything when you don t have the proper color handy. To do this you ll want to send colored light energy into and around the candle before working with it as part of your prep work. Hold it in both hands, close your eyes and visualize the color you need, and see it coming out from your hands and into the candle. In your mind s eye see the candle go from white to whatever color you re seeing. 7

8 Preparing a Skull Candle What I m going to share with you from this point on, including the spells and recipes later, are all how I work with these candles. Naturally different practitioners from different traditions and with different views of magic are going to have their own take on things. My approach is a sort of European folk magic and hoodoo blend I guess...not strictly hoodoo but heavily influenced by it along with my other magical background. I did say before that I was only going to mention ethics once, and I meant it, but I m going to just briefly mention it again here only because I m going to include a few spells that to some people might be considered black magic. Again, do what feels right for you. If that kind of stuff doesn t feel right, don t do it. Only do what you re comfortable with. Using a skull candle is super easy. There are a number of steps but they are all pretty ease. 1. Wash the candle 2. Load the candle 3. Dress the candle 4. Prepare a petition 5. Charge and awaken the candle 6. Set your candle tray or coaster 8

9 Wash The Candle This can be done simply with just water and a cotton ball but I prefer to use Florida Water, a light magical cologne that is used for cleansing and purifying. Simply use a cotton ball dabbed with your cleansing fluid and thoroughly wipe the candle down. This is to help with removing not only physical dirt but also any energy vibrations that the candle may be holding on to from people that have handled it before you. Load The Candle This is when you fill the base of the candle with herbs, petitions, and personal concerns of the person who the candle is intended for. The herbs should be in alignment with your spell s intention and the personal concerns, such hair, nail clippings, pictures, or handwriting, should be from the person who the candle is meant to represent. So if the candle is for you then use your own personal concerns. Loading the candle is done by carving out a whole in the bottom of the candle big enough to stuff with the herbs {just a pinch of each used} and anything else being used. When you do this you want to save the chunks of wax that you dig out from the bottom of the candle because you ll use this to seal up the bottom when you re done by pushing as much into the hole as you can and then using a lighter to melt it all together. Dress The Candle / Charge and Awaken The Candle Here you ll use a condition oil, or magical blend, that corresponds to your intention to anoint the candle. Then you ll use incense to smoke the candle, a process that helps breathe life into an object. You ll also charge it with your intention by speaking your spell into the ears of the candle. Prepare a Petition / Set Your Candle Tray or Coaster This is simply creating a piece of paper with words and symbols to represent your desire which is placed under the candle as it burns. This is all put together on a tray or large coaster - petition on the bottom, candle on top, and then any luminary candles around it as well as herbs, crystals, and other items you plan to use. 9

10 A Sample Skull Candle Spell Here I ll share with you a sample spell and the complete process of doing the actual spell. In the next section I ll share with you the components for some additional spells. Remember, skull candles are ultimately about influencing thoughts and getting into someone s head, be it for good or ill. So when you re doing healing for someone with a skull candle the idea is to influence their thoughts in way that makes them more open and receptive to healing and puts them in a better frame of mind to receive healing. Sample Scenario: My friend Sue is dealing with a really bad run of luck. She s lost her job, is feeling lonely, and is become quite depressed. In order to help her get her head clear and feel more focused, she s asked me for some help and to send her some positive energy. I m going to use a white skull candle to do a spell for her as a way to direct this energy she needs to her to get her back on track. Items I ll use: white skull candle Florida Water 3 herbs: rue {healing + cleansing}, marjoram {relieve sorrow} rosemary {peace, protection, luck} Healing Oil - {frankincense, benzoin, rosemary, rose, lavender, lemongrass, rue, cinnamon} Jinx Remover Incense - {dried garlic, copal, mint, camphor} Sue s hair Sue s picture Pen A large plate to arrange it all on 10

11 1. I start by using the Florida Water and a cotton ball to clean the candle. I don t pay too much attention to motion or direction I m cleaning it in but I do focus my intention specifically on removing anything negative, harmful, or unwanted from the candle. I visualize the candle glowing white when I m done and I ve cleaned the candle completely. 2. I carve out a divot in the bottom of the candle and set aside the wax that is dug out. One by one I take a pinch of each of my three herbs I m working with, rue, marjoram, and rosemary, and I tap each one, gently breathe on it, and then tell it why I m using it. This is a process of awakening the spirit of the herb itself and giving it direction and purpose. I add each one of the hole in the bottom of the candle and then add Sue s hair. I add a single drop of the Healing Oil on top of it all and then I place the wax I dug out back on top and gently push it into the hole. I then use a lighter to carefully melt the wax {which can get a little tricky because you don t want to light the herbs on fire...you can always use a taper candle in the same color to melt wax over the hole to seal it}. 3. Now I ll anoint the candle with the Healing Oil. I do this in a very gentle, loving manner, talking to the candle as though I m talking to Sue, telling her sweet, loving things and encouraging her to feel better, to think more positively, and to be rid of the negative thoughts that have had her feeling stuck. I personally do this just this once but I take my time - I could spend 10 minutes doing this or even an hour. However some hoodoo traditions say to do this step each night for seven nights and then on the eighth night move forward with lighting the candle. {You can also dust the candle now with condition powders.} 4. Before I move on to doing anything else with the candle, I ll create a small petition paper using a picture of Sue. On the back of the picture I write her full name and date of birth at the top. Then in the center of the paper I write her name three times, then turning the picture 90 degrees, I criss-cross her name with the intention for the candle/what you want them to be thinking about, the thoughts you want them to have. I anoint the four corner with the oil and then place the paper on the center of the tray, picture side up. 11

12 Here we have Sue Smith, three times with Clarity, Hope three times criss-crossing her name. This represents the desired effect covering her. 5. Next I light the Jinx Remover incense and make sure there is plenty of it burning and that it s producing a good amount of smoke. As a warning, this incense does NOT smell good, but it shouldn t! Once the incense is burning well I hold the candle over the incense, turning it slowly to make sure the whole candle is covered in smoke. I remove the candle and breathe into the candle and speak Sue s name into the candle, telling her how to feel...in this case telling her to feel clear-headed, hopeful, excited for a new beginning, and so on. When I m done I place the candle on top of the petition paper/picture on the tray. 6. The last step is to awaken some more of the herbs and sprinkle them around the candle in a clockwise direction on the tray {clockwise for attraction, counterclockwise to banish}. I light a little more incense, say a prayer, and visualize Sue past all of these things. I then light the candle and let it burn down completely. Then I take all the remnants, put them in a muslin bag, anoint with more oil, and give to Sue as a charm to help her as she heals and attracts more positive changes into her life. 12

13 A Few Other Tips: You can burn the candle over a period of days, you don t have to do it all in one day/sitting. One way to do this is to light the candle and either burn it for a period of time every day for 7 days {typically} or to burning it for a specific amount of time each day until it s burned down {often an hour at a time}. Do whatever you feel is best for what you re doing. I find that long term burning brings more long term results while burning all at once brings things about a little quicker though the results may not be as long lasting. Determine how long you need to influence the person s thoughts and how quickly you need them to turn around to your way of thinking and you can use that to decide on how to burn the candle. If you burn the candle over time, make sure you snuff it out each time you are ending your work and not blowing the candle out. Blowing it out puts and end to the work. If you snuff it you can relight it without much work on your part to continue the spell, but I do recommend that you talk to the candle and reinforce what your intentions are before and as you relight it. There are many ways to create a name paper or petition paper but what I showed you here is my preferred way. You can do research online for other ways to do it if you d like to try something different. You can also dust the candle with sachet powders in the same or corresponding condition as your oil you use. For example if you re doing a spell to get someone to think loving thoughts of you you might use Love Me oil but dust the candle with Kiss Me Now powder to ensure that they have a quick sexual attraction to you right off. Nail and pins are used to draw energy to a specific place on the skull. So if you want someone to specifically see or not see something, depending on the work you re doing you d put heated pins in the eyes of the candle and so on. 13

14 Spell Variations Naturally depending on the kind of spell you re doing and the intentions behind it, things will be a little different from this example, but the core of it is the same. Here is how this may vary a little. If you re doing negative work: Should you do work that might be aimed at influencing someone in a negative way or to coerce them to do something against their will, you need to stop them from being able to detect your work. This is often done by taking long needles and either heating them up or otherwise sealing the eyes, ears, mouth, and nose of the of candle so they cannot see, hear, smell, or speak about what you re doing and break your work. If you use the needles you would stick them in the various places on the candle. Carving names and words in the candle: Instead of using petition or name papers you can also carve the target s name and date of birth on the bottom of the candle. Then around the head write the words and thoughts you want the person to have, indicating how you want to influence their mind. Disposal of remains: Depending on the intention of your work the way you dispose of the left over wax, herbs, and petitions will vary. Here is a list of ways to dispose of your remains depending on the intention. If any of these are beyond your ability to carry out, consider this: If the spell is meant to attract something to you and your home, keep the remains close to you. If the spell is meant to send something away from you or your home, dispose of it off your property. 14

15 Bury In Your Yard If the work is meant to keep something or someone close to you, bury the remains in your yard. Bury At Your Doorstep If the work is meant to attract something to you, bury it at your front door. Burn It If the intention is to destroy the influence someone or something has on your, burn the remains. Running Water If the work is aimed at sending something or someone away, throw it into running water. At The Crossroads If your work is sending something far away or disperse it, throw it into a crossroads over your left shoulder. In A Graveyard If you re working with spirits, or your work is intended to cause serious harm or death, bury in a graveyard. Throw It East, Throw It West If your work is meant to create new beginnings or strengthen something in your life, scatter to the East. If your work is meant to end or weaken something in your life, scatter remains to the West. Hide In A Tree If you want your work to carry on long term and for it never to be discovered, hide inside a tree. Spell Timing: Skull candles are best worked when the target would be sleeping as this is when they are most susceptible. 15

16 Skull Candle Spells Here we are, time to do some work! What follows is a list of spell intentions, ingredients and recipes that can all be used following the process in the previous section. Again keep two things in mind: This is how I personally do things. I do them this way because they work for me. I cannot guarantee 100% that they will work for you the same as they do for me because your intention, energy, and belief in what you re doing is the driving force behind the work you re going to do. Your magic, your ethics! I m the LAST person to tell anyone what they should and shouldn t do from a moral standpoint when it comes to magic. You cast the spells you are comfortable casting. If you are ever uncomfortable with something don t do it! Nobody is holding a gun to your head here, so if you don t want to work a spell intended to caused serious harm to someone, don t! There are always multiple ways to work on a situation magically. I m just sharing my own spells for your reference. These are sections off into three categories: White Spells - healing, blessing, protection, unhexing, and luck Grey Spells - love, abundance, money, and influence Black Spells - control, illness, hexing, and jinxing This is where things get a little tricky but I wanted to section these off in some way so I decided to go with this. Now, you may have a different view on some of these spells and whether or not they fall into a grey or black category, or even if they qualify as white spells. The division of the spells in this way is not really a set in stone/hardcore thing, it s just now I believe most people would view these spells. 16

17 The thing to keep in kind is this: All of these spells, technically, are grey or black, depending on your view, because they are all meant to influence the thoughts and mind of another. Personally I see all magic as being a grey area. By it s very nature magic manipulates energy and sometimes, more often than we might like to admit, much of that energy belongs to another person. When someone likes to debate me on this kind of work I also bring this up: How often in your daily life, without magic, do you work to try and influence the thoughts and minds of another person? Just because you don t use a candle with some herbs and oils doesn t mean you re not being manipulative. This is just another way to go about changing someone s thoughts. I will not be sharing death spells like D.U.M.E. {Death Unto My Enemies}. You can research those online and in books if you wish, and there are plenty of hoodoo and conjure sites online that share death spells. I often find that these spells are the ones we go to when we re really in the heat of the moment with something and when cooler heads prevail we find another way to deal with our issue. But again, it s your magic and your work so do what you feel in your heart is what you need to do. I definitely don t deny that there are times when a death spell is fitting but those are extreme cases, not just because your co-worker snagged a promotion from you or your boyfriend cheated on you. Death spells, for me, are reserved for pedophiles, rapists, and murders. I will also tell you, for the sake of transparency, I have not performed ALL of these spells, but rather researched and written them for possible future use or for clients when I used to do magical consults. 17

18 White Spells for Skulls Clarity Use this spell to make someone better understand your intentions or reasons behind something you ve done or said or to help them see a situation more clearly. Use a White Skull. Oil - Clarity Herbs - Bay Leaves, Solomon Seal, Basil Tips: You can add some Compelling powder to dust the candle with if you re really trying to get someone to see things clearly YOUR way. You may also want to focus some energy on HOW you want them to understand you {see things a certain way, say things a certain way,hear things a certain way}. You can use pins in those areas if you need to. Unhexing Use this to relieve yourself or someone else of thoughts that might be causing them to feel or act as though they are cursed. Remember that often it s our own thoughts that curse us, not another person. Use a White or Black Skull. Oil - Unhexing Herbs - Lemongrass, Rue, Hyssop Tips: I like doing this one over a period of 7 days. If you re doing it for yourself it works great in conjunction with other work like cleansing and unhexing baths each night the candle is burning. 18

19 Protection When you want someone to feel and really know they are safe and protected, use this. Use a White Skull. Oil - Protection Herbs - Salt, Rosemary, Angelica Healing Use this for all kinds of healing issues. Adjust the herbs to reflect specific kinds of healing thoughts you want the person to have, such as using herbs specifically for mental health or certain physical conditions. This spell ultimately is aimed at getting the person to feel more hopeful about their aliment so they heal. Use a White Skull. Oil - Healing Herbs - Angelica, Life Everlasting, Coriander Tips: I use a white skull for this because they are usually the easiest to get but you can charge this with deep blue light for healing, or if you can find a blue skull candle, you can use that. I also like to dust this candle with Blessing powder when I feel the work needs a little spiritual intervention. Luck This is for getting people to have more lucky thoughts so they can attract more luck to them. Use a Green Skull. Oil: Lady Luck Herbs: Cinnamon, Five-Finger Grass, Rose Tips: I also dust this one with powder related to what kind of luck is needed {money, love, gambling etc}. You can use more general luck oils or ones specific to the kind of luck desires. Lady Luck is a good overall oil but can be helpful in gambling. 19

20 Grey Spells for Skulls Money Drawing This is a very general money spell aimed at getting someone to give you money. Depending on the herbs and oils or powders used you can adjust this to have someone pay back a debt, give you a job, loan you money, or even attract a sugar daddy. Use a Green Skull. Oil: Money Drawing Herbs: Five Finger Grass, Cinnamon, Vetiver Tips: This is one that I always like to dust because you want to get someone to give you money or do something that is going to attract money to you. This might mean using Pay Me to get money owed to me or Steady Work or Prosperity powder for promotions or money from a job. Money Unhexing If you re feeling like your cash flow has been jinxed use this to help undo those thoughts. Use a White Skull. Oil: Money Unhexing Herbs: Bayberry, Salt, Alkanet Tips: If you feel that the jinx was actually work or energy sent to you by someone else you can use this spell on that person to influence them to no longer wish to see you with money troubles. Make your desire to have them see you as prosperous in order to turn their negative work and thoughts around. Shut Up If someone is talking crap about you or gossiping a bit more than you care for, this is a great way to get them to stop what their doing. Use a Black Skull. 20

21 Oil: Shut Up Herbs: Deer s Tongue, Devi s Shoestring, Slippery Elm Tips: I have to admit, I LOVE this spell. I ve used this one off and on for over 10 years with great success. Depending on the situation or how far gone the gossip is I also use Confusion powder to dust the candle to make the things the person is thinking and saying get confused. With this added element it also starts to make them look bad to the people they re telling the gossip to. You also want to focus on the mouth of the candle because you want to stop them from talking. There are few things you can do with this - you can use nails or pins lengthwise over the mount area to symbolically sew up or close the mouth. You can also use a candle or lighter to heat up the mouth area so you can smooth it over, essentially removing their ability to speak. Or you can carve out a lengthwise space in the mount and stuff it with Devil s Shoestring to tie up their tongue. Return To Me When you re really sure you want the one that got away back, use this to get them thinking about you again. Make sure you really want them back because you re getting them warts and all. Return To Me can also be used for other things like getting money back, getting a job back, etc. This here is specifically for getting back a lover but with a few additions and changes you can get back anything! Use a Red Skull. Oil: Return To Me Herbs: Rose, Calamus, Sugar Tips: You absolutely want to have a physical personal concern from the person you are targeting for this one. You ll want their hair, saliva, or nail clippings to load the candle. You will also want to add powder to this one or blend two oils to do your anointing. Usually just getting the person to come back to you isn t all you re after, you re usually looking for them to stick around, stay faithful, or even propose. Use Stay With Me powder to keep them with you and faithful, use Marriage to get a proposal when they come back, or use Reconciliation if the initial breakup with an angry one. 21

22 Black Spells for Skulls Controlling In general this one is meant to control the thoughts of someone but you have the ability to add to this one with other oils and powders to be really specific about how you re going to control them. Use a Black Skull. Oil: Controlling Herbs: Licorice Root, Poppy Seeds, Tobacco Tips: This one gets a little more involved. Load the candle like normal, dress with the oil, but then take a coffin nail and heat it up with your lighter and create a small divot on the top of the skull and fill with poppy seeds. Then hate the nail again, dip in a little of the oil, and carefully drive it into the center of the forehead. You can add all kinds of things to this one like adding Prosperity powder if you want to control someone and their money, Boss Fix if you want to control your boss s thoughts, and you can add Confusion to this as well if you want to just dominate the situation with confusion as well. Go Away When you just want someone to piss off, this is really helpful. Use a Red or Black Skull Oil: Hot Foot Herbs: Guinea Pepper {aka Red Pepper}, Sulfur, Salt Tips: For the influencing thoughts you might want to plant the idea in the person s mind to move away to another state, to get another job, or to suddenly find you undesirable if they are stalking or harassing you. The focus should be to put their mind on getting as far away from you as they can. I generally use a black skull for this but you can use a red one to add more heat or fire and swiftness to the situation so it goes by fast. 22

23 Reverse Thoughts Use this one when you need to get someone to do a 180 on something they are thinking. Use a Black Skull or if the issue is focused on money or business use a Green Skull, for love use a Red Skull. Oil: Reversal Herbs: Rue, Vetiver, Lemongrass Tips: This one has a lot of potential to customize based on your needs. I had a client use this successfully to stop a divorce she didn t want by adding Look Me Over oil so he would see her differently and Stay With Me oil so he would change his mind about wanting to be without her. If you tried to get someone to loan you money and they said no you can work on them here by adding Pay Me oil or powder. If the situation is more about the fact that the person has a really wrong view of you or a situation you can also add Clarity oil or powder so that not only are their thoughts reversed but more clear and focused on the truth of a situation. Confusion Use this one when you want to cause confusion for someone. This is often used when you re looking to cause a lot of chaos for someone so that they are fighting with people in their life, especially if the person happens to be an enemy of yours who is also gossiping about you. Oil: Confusion Herbs: Poppy Seeds, Black Pepper, Chicory Tips: This is another spell that has another added step. You ll also need either a handful or a small box of pins. After you ve lit the candle you re going to heat the pins one at a time and drive them into the top of the candle all around the head while naming each one for something that you want to have happen like arguments, fighting, confusion, etc. The idea is that with each pin as it s heated, named, and driven into the head that energy is filling the person s mind and thoughts. This is another one that you can add powders related to a specific issue like confusion in love or money. 23

25 Making Oils, Incense + Powders Here you ll find a collection of recipes that I use for all of the blends that I ve mentioned in the spells here. All of these are ones that either I ve created myself or modified from recipes in books. I m really big on making things your own, even when you find them from someone who s perceived as an authority on magic. You never know the real intention behind what someone else has created so always make things your own...yes, even my recipes! For this very reason I am not giving you measurements for the ingredients. In truth the amount of something you use isn t as important as the fact that you have some of it s spirit in the mix. So that means that if you have a recipe that calls for marjoram as one of the ingredients but you only have a small amount, maybe a pinch of two, but the other ingredient is sage and you have a ton of that, it s OK to only use the pinch of marjoram and then use more of the sage. Amounts are subjective in many cases. It s more about the energy you re creating and everyone is going to do that a little differently {as you should}. I also use the same ingredients for oils, incense, and powders. So with each of these here you can use them for any of those blends. For making oils I like using jojoba as a base oil because your blend wont go rancid over time, however there are reasons to use olive, almond, or sunflower oil. Do your research or use your preferred base. For incense I use just straight rough cut or ground herbs burned on incense charcoal. I HIGHLY recommend making sure you break up seeds and resins well before burning. Seeds can explode and resins, when super chunky, can melt and pool on the charcoal, essentially snuffing it out. Some people like to blend the herbs with saltpeter to make them self-burning. Again, experiment if you wish but be careful with 25

26 saltpeter because it is a flammable and can explode when there s too much in the blend. For powders I grind the herbs in a coffee grinder to a powder and then mix 1 part total herb blend to 3 parts corn starch. I often add a drop or two of the corresponding oil blend as well for scent. If you find that there is an ingredient below that you can t find an essential oil for in order to make an oil blend there are two options for you to work with. You can simply add the solid ingredient to your oil bottle and allow it to sit for at least 48 hours in a warm place before using, or you can make your own essential oil before beginning to make your condition blend. Making Your Own Essentials - The Rough At Home Version Use fresh herbs, as fresh as you can get. Dried herbs aren t ideal because most of the oils are gone, but in a pinch you can use them. I find that you ll need twice as much herb, a wee bit more oil, and about twice as long to get the same result. It can be done if needed so plan ahead if you use dried. Take your herbs and wash gently to remove any dirt. Then place your herb inside a small plastic bag and gently but firmly bruise with a kitchen mallet. Pour 1 cup of oil into a clear jar and place the herbs inside. Cap tightly and place in a warm, sunny place in your home for hours and shake a few times a day. Open the jar pour the oil out into a bowl over cheesecloth to catch the herbs. Squeeze the herbs in the cloth firmly to get all remaining oil out. Return the oil to the jar and toss out the used herbs. {Some people will keep some of the herbs in the jar, but only save a few pinches in it if you do this.} Be sure to label the jar so you don t get your oils confused since the herby ones can smell similar over time. Keep your intention focused as you create your blend and charge them with your energy before using. 26
