2 In this special Christmas Issue By Joe Gelm, Editor We hope all of those who live and enjoy our Village have a wonderful holiday season. While we don t anticipate a White Christmas as many of us Yankees used to know, you will see from the following pages that we have learned how to enjoy this festive time of year. Included are some pictures taken when a group of us traveled to Myrtle Beach to enjoy the fabulous Christmas shows there. They were great! The second set of pictures are from our December Pot Luck / Christmas Party. We enjoyed some seasonal food and beverages and some additional door prizes for 50/50 ticket holders. Santa surprised us with a visit after dinner and handed out candy canes to all. We enjoyed Village friends in singing Christmas carols together. The third article and set of pictures are from a progressive dinner organized by our Village singles. We progressed to 7 homes enjoying treats at each. We sang Christmas carols as we progressed to the next house with the assistance of our friendly wizard, Santa s elf, Rudolph, and Randy, the no-nose reindeer. Santa arrived in his southern sleigh at the close of our fun event and entertained the group generating much laughter. I considered adding captions to each of the pictures but thought it would be more fun to have you recognize who is in the pictures, Ann Herman educated us about Hanukkah with the following: Hanukkah commemorates the successful rebellion of the ancient Israelites against he Syrian Greek army in the Maccabean war in 162 BC. There was a ritual cleansing and re-dedication of the menorah in the Holy Temple in Jerusalem after the victory. It is believed that there was only enough consecrated oil to keep the lamp burning for one day but he small bottle of oil miraculously lasted for eight days. Hanukkah is referred to as the Festival of Lights for this reason. Hanukkah is celebrated at home for eight days by lighting one additional candle on the MENO- RAH each night, playing the dreidel game, singing songs and exchanging gifts. Many Hanukkah foods are deep fried in oil, symbolizing the oil for the MENORAH used in the Temple. These include latkes (potato pancakes) and jelly donuts. 2

3 Some Villagers Went To Myrtle Beach for Christmas Shows On December 1-3, 2015, 14 Village couples visited Myrtle Beach for some fun and great Christmas shows. The weather was great, the shows were great,, the golf was great and the trip was wonderful. Thank you Jan Milanese for the idea and organizing this event. We stayed at the Ocean Reef Resort right on the beach...beautiful. We had a very pleasant social before heading to the Alabama theater. 3

4 Our Myrtle Beach Christmas Shows The Alabama Theater On our second day, the men played golf and the ladies shopped. Then we were off to dinner and our second show at the Carolina Opera. The shows were wonderful! But...many of my pictures turned out poorly. Thought I would at least share these...joe. 4

5 Our December Pot luck Dinner was a Christmas party with 52 attendees. Peggy & Joe Gelm hosted and Sue Lucas did another wonderful job with decorations. Santa arrived and handed out candy canes and we drew 50/50 raffle tickets. We handed out 6 additional gifts to ticket holders. 5

6 Did you hear what I heard? Or better yet, did you see what I saw? By Nancy Cope On December 7, a group of elves were seen being led by a magician through the Village streets caroling and making merry. Seven Elf stations were posted on Easy Wind and Shady Hollow and provided special foods in small elf portions as the group moved about the town. Members of the Village choral group joined the singing, but interestingly like magic, the sorcerer turned into an Elf who was seen directing traffic on Minglewood. Elf food stations included hors d'oeuvres, salad, soup, entrees, and desserts. Teams of Villagers worked together at each station to serve the carolers. Diane Turner headed Elf Central; Salads: by Betsy Cranford; Soups: by Laura Stockton, Entrees: by Joyce Blackwood and Desserts: by Sheila Braun and Maureen Sanner. By the time the carolers got to the soup station, Mr. Elf had morphed into Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. He and Jim Wetterau were seen and heard singing that very song as a duet. Joe Gelm, Ed Woolson and Jim then serenaded Laura s kitchen with We Three Kings! Several stops were made along the streets to sing to Villagers who had recent surgery. A special guest Samantha Holder, from a professional home nursing service, joined the journey and at the dessert station surprised all participants with age appropriate gifts. Maybe an EMT vehicle should have followed this group, but instead they had a van shuttle for those who chose not to walk. The mail truck was following for a little while with a quite surprised, smiling mailman. 6

7 And lo in the darkness there appeared Rudy, Rudolph s brother at the entrée station 6. By the time the revelers reached Station 7: desserts, without the glowing nose of Rudolph to guide the way, Santa showed up in a red sports car. Santa asked the group if they knew where he was from and when the North Pole answer was not correct, Santa started a dance, taking off his hat, his belt, and then opening his red furry jacket, revealed the answer: ALASKA!!!! The merriment started and ended with stories of traditions practiced by Villagers in this holiday season. One tradition revealed by Shiela and Maureen, transplants from Michigan and Wisconsin (well, way up North) ended in a snowball fight. Snowballs were still found inside Santa s sports car after Santa returned the vehicle to Joe and Peggy Gelm s garage. It All started at Ann Herman s home. 7
