1 EYFS Special times: lessons using persona dolls Notes about using persona dolls Persona dolls are an extremely valuable tool in supporting learning about and from different religions. By encouraging children to enter imaginatively into the life of the doll, they can be introduced to situations, ideas and issues that are significant and relevant to them and also experiences that are sometimes very different from their own. Persona dolls should be recognised as special and generally only used in planned teaching and learning sessions. Practitioners are encouraged to use open-ended questions that will stimulate discussion, invite participation, help the children relate to the doll and encourage them to ask their own questions. As the material is contextualised in the life of the doll children find it easier to engage with the mystery and wonder of the religion in focus Samuel s Story (Jewish focus): special times Inside Samuel s backpack 8-branched menorah Hanukkah candles Dreidel in gift box New jumper for Samuel Apples and honey Special words menorah, Hanukkiah, shamash, Hanukkah, Jewish, temple, dreidel Rosh Hashanah Shofar, Tashlich, synagogue Hanukkah Sit Samuel in a circle with the children in your group. Place the backpack in the centre of the circle, take out a miniature 8-branched menorah (or Hanukkiah) with the extra helper candle (shamash). Tell the children that Samuel would like someone to help him put the candles in the branches.? Why do you think there are eight candles on the stand? Tell the children that Samuel loves the time of year when his family celebrate Hanukkah. The Hanukkiah helps everyone to remember an important miracle for Jewish people. Ideally tell the story of Hanukkah using miniature figures to illustrate. Use appropriate open questions throughout. 1

2 Long ago, people used real flames as they burned oil to light their rooms. Once there was a wicked king, called Antiochus, who wanted all the people in the land to worship the gods that he worshipped. The Jews said No because they knew that they only believed in the one true God.? Have you ever been asked to do something that you knew was wrong? Antiochus was furious. He went with his soldiers to the temple where the Jews worshipped God and they destroyed the sacred scrolls on which were written important words. They also broke many precious objects. The Jews were very upset and angry. They had to run away and hide in the hills from Antiochus soldiers. A very brave man, called Judas the Maccabee, gathered some men together to fight the king s soldiers and make them leave the temple. There was a very fierce battle, but finally Judas and his men won and straight away they set about rebuilding the temple and making it beautiful again. The sacred menorah, a candelabra like the Hanukkiah, that was supposed to always burn brightly in the temple, had gone out and the oil was spilt. They found enough oil to relight it for one day. But it would take eight days to go and collect more oil. The people were sad because they knew the menorah would go out once again. But a miraculous thing happened. Although it took eight whole days to collect the oil and bring it back, the menorah just went on burning! Samuel s family remember this miracle as they celebrate Hanukkah. They light candles on an eight-branched menorah or Hanukkiah. One extra candle, called a shamash or helper, is used to light the others. Light each candle on Samuel s Hanukkiah. One candle is lit on the first evening, two on the second evening, until the eighth evening when all eight candles are lit. On each of the nights of Hanukkah Samuel and his family receive presents from one another. After lighting each candle pass around a raisin to each member of the group. These candles remind everyone how the oil in the temple lasted for eight days. During Hanukkah, Samuel, Joseph and their cousins play games with spinning tops called dreidels. They eat doughnuts and latkes, which are fried in oil, to remind them of the miracle. Open the gift box to reveal a dreidel. Children in your group may enjoy playing a simple version of the dreidel game and sharing some mini-doughnuts or latkes like Samuel s family at Hanukkah. 2

3 Recipe for Latkes - makes approximately 12 INGREDIENTS 4 medium potatoes 1 medium onion 2 eggs 3/4 cup flour salt and black pepper to taste vegetable oil METHOD Shred the potatoes and onion into a large bowl. Press out all excess liquid. Add eggs and mix well. Add flour gradually and mix until the batter is doughy. Add a few dashes of salt and black pepper. Heat about 1/2 inch of oil to medium-high heat. Form the batter into thin patties about the size of your palm. Fry batter in oil. Turn over when bottom is golden brown. Place finished latkes on paper towels to drain. Eat hot with sour cream or applesauce. They reheat OK in a microwave. 3

4 Rosh Hashanah & Tashlich Part 1: Sit Samuel in a circle with the children in your group. Place the backpack in the centre of the circle and take out a new jersey for Samuel and a container with enough slices of apple for everyone in the group and a pot of honey. Samuel wonders if everyone likes the new jersey his Mum has bought him to celebrate a special Jewish festival called Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. The story Apples and Honey by Zucker & Cohen is an appropriate text to introduce the festival of Rosh Hashanah. Every member of Samuel s family has something new to wear to celebrate the new beginning. At this time Samuel s family eat apples dipped in honey to show that they are hoping for sweet times ahead. Part 2: Pass the apple slices around the circle followed by the jar of honey. Explain to the children that as they dip their apple slice in to the honey and eat it, they are going to think of something they can do for someone else to make their life sweeter in the days ahead. Explain to the children that at Rosh Hashanah, Samuel and his family also go to the synagogue, which is their special place for worship. Show the first slide from the Special Places CD. Inside the synagogue they hear the shofar blown 100 times. It is a ram s horn, which is blown to make a very loud sound. It calls in the new year. After this, Samuel and his family go down to the river for the ceremony of Tashlich. They throw crumbs into the river and say sorry for the sad things that have happened and the things they wish they hadn t said or done. After the crumbs have floated away Samuel and his family look forward to the new year and a new beginning.? Can you think of something that you wish you hadn t done? Can you remember saying sorry? Why is saying sorry important? If you have a river or stream near you, you might want to try a version of this activity with your group. 4
