4 page 4 of 7 1 Task The Company Hoppecke GmbH & Co. KG commissioned the IMA GmbH Dresden with the burning test of two production series of batteries according to the specification UL 94 VO (08/02/2005). In difference to the specification an entire battery was tested instated a part of material. 2 State of delivery and labeling of specimens In the burning test three batteries were tested with following applications: One battery of type: 5 OPzV 250 Two batteries of type: 10 OPzV 1000 from the company Hoppecke GmbH & Co. KG The specimens were delivered in IMA GmbH on April 16 th, The delivery state of the connector system was faultless. In protection of short the specimens were wrapped with plastic film. Figure 1: delivery of the specimen 10 OPzV 1000 (without carrier) The specimens used in the burning test are filled and ready end products. The specimen with the application number 5 OPzV 250 was indicated with B129/7-1. The specimens of the production series 10 OPzV 1000 got the test identification numbers B129/7-2 and B129/7-3.

5 page 5 of 7 3 Execution of the Test The Test was carried out according to specification UL 94 VO. The specification provides a burning test at tailored samples of the case material. The burning test was carried out on an entire battery this was specified by the customer. The burning test was carried out with following parameters: Specimen tested in vertical position Bunsen burner flame at free end Flame height 20 mm ± 2 mm Specimen is held in flame for 10 seconds and removed from flame, time is recorded for flame to go out Specimen is placed back in the flame for another 10 seconds and time in seconds is recorded again Numbers of burning positions per specimen: 5 Medium for burning test: propane gas Test criteria for the test according to UL 94 VO: Burning time of all individual specimens must be less than or equal to 10 seconds Total combined burn times of 5 specimens must be less than 50 seconds No flaming drops are allowed Hoppecke 20 Specimen Figure 2: Schematic Test set up Bunsen burner with fastener The Figure 2 points the schematic test set up. The inner flame cone was adjusted for 20 mm. The Bunsen burner was positioned in front of the specimen, so that the inner flame cone touched the specimen.

6 page 6 of 7 4 Results of Burning Test The burning test was carried out without complication. The following figure shows the test set up. The flame impingement was carried out on the surface of the specimens. During the flame impingements show all specimens the same fire behavior of the flame. The flame color changed from a blue gas flame to a firm yellow flame. This color change is shown in the following figures Figure 4: Change of flame color during the test on specimen B129/7-1

A blowing out of the case or a dripping could not be established at any specimens.

7 page 7 of 7 Every specimen was flamed 5 times for 10 s each. After removing the flame no burning of the surface was visual observed. White smoke was noticed on the specimens for a short time after removing of the flame. The surfaces of the specimens showed external burning appearances. A blowing out of the case or a dripping could not be established at any specimens. Centre of burning White Smoke Burned Area Unburned Surface 5 Conclusion The burning test according to UL 94 VO on entire batteries was passed of the specimens of the production series 5 OPzV 250 and 10 OPzV 1000 according the predefined examining criteria.
