2 Tic Tac Toe Project Supply List Below are the items used in this project. 6 x 6 Tile Scotch Tape Ruler Sharpie Marker 2 Bottles of Alcohol Ink (complimentary colors) Can of Compressed Air 6 x 6 Cut Felt Elmer s Glue 10 Cabachons (two colors, unless you plan to paint them) For Sealing Tile Can of Kamar Varnish Triple Thick Brush on Glaze NOTE: This is the list of supplies used in this project. Depending on how you want to decorate your tile, your supplies may be different.

3 In this project, I will walk you through creating a tic tac toe game board using alcohol ink and a 6in x 6in tile. Start with a clean tile. You can use any size tile. I ve created these in the past with 4in x 4 in tiles, as well as the small tiles that come in a sheet of tiles. In this project, I used a 6 x 6 tile. Clean the tile s surface thoroughly with 91% alcohol using a cotton ball. Then using your ruler mark edges of the tile with a sharpie as seen here. For the sixinch tile, you would want to place your marks at 2in and 4in on all four sides. For a 4in square tile, your markings would be at about 1 1/3 and 2 3/5in, roughly. These markings are your guides to where to mask the cross hatches.

4 Next, cut and place the scotch tape to line up with the markings on the tile. See image. Be sure the press the tape down, especially on the outer edges of the tape to keep the ink from seeping under the tape. I recommend using a cotton swab or paper towel. Using your finger could cause oils to transfer to the tile and may interfere with the alcohol ink adhering to the tile.

5 Next, drop your ink. In this demonstrations I use two colors of Adirondack alcohol ink -- Sunshine Yellow and Mermaid. I used my can of compressed air to blow the ink in this example. You can use your favorite artistic technique to paint or cover the tile. Project Tic Tac Toe

6 The Reveal Now it s time to peel back the tape to reveal the cross lines. In the photos below you will see what this produced. Next, I paint the side edges of the tile to give it a more finished look. I m using a sharpie marker that is close to the color of the ink I used on the tile.

7 Coloring in the White Cross Lines Using an alcohol ink marker, paint in the white cross lines. Paint the edges of the cross lines using an archival ink pen.

8 Finishing After you ve done painting your tile and are happy with your result, you will need to seal the tile, just as you do with any alcohol in on tile art. First spray 2-3 light coats of Krylon Kamar Varnish about 18 inches from the tile. Let dry about 30 minutes between coats. Allow that to dry for at least 24 hours. Then brush on a layer of Triple Thick Brush on Glaze using long brush strokes. Do not brush back and forth. Brush in one direction and be careful not to overwork the glaze. Allow to dry 48 to 72 hours. Apply Felt to Back It s a good idea to add a protectant to the back of the tile so that you don t scratch furniture and so that the game board slides easily. Cut a piece of felt out to match the size of the tile (in this case 6in x 6in). You can trace an outline of the felt and cut from that for an exact fit. Using Elmer s glue, glue the felt onto the back of the tile. Allow to dry for 24 hours.
