3-D ICE CREAM CONES Art Lesson: Four Ice Cream Cones By Wayne Thiebaud
Meet the Artist: Pg. 2 Wayne Thiebaud, PAINTER Born: November 15, 1920 Was born in Mesa, Arizona in 1920 and worked as an animator for Disney at the age of 16. His use of single and multiple images of mass produced American foods which have linked him with Pop Art, yet he considers himself a realist painter.
ln addition to still life paintings, his subject matter has included figures, landscapes and cityscapes. Pg. 3 Four Ice Cream Cones is owned by the Phoenix Art Museum. He has received numerous honors for his work, most notably the National Medal of Arts, presented to him by President William J. Clinton in a 1994 ceremony at the White House. About the Art: 1. Four large luscious ice cream cones line up on the counter of an ice cream parlor. 2. The cone holder is defined by narrow bands of color that extend horizontally to the edge of the painting. 3. The holder contains four brown cones each with two scoops of ice cream. 4. The artist chooses soft, pale colored ice cream in direct contrast to the bright blue shadows cast on the holder. 5. By thick heavy oil paint and using rapid brush strokes it resulted into a rich creamy texture of the ice cream. 6. The artist s great interest was in painting the objects as realistic as they appear in life.
Pg. 4 Possible Questions: 1. Why do you think the artist chose ice cream cones? 2. What shapes do you see? Do they repeat themselves? 3. What do you think the ice cream cones would feel like if you could touch them? 4. How does this make you feel? Hungry? Thirsty? Happy? Cold? 5. How are these ice creams different from real ice cream cones? How are they the same? The Art Project: 3-D Ice Cream Cones Art Supplies: - Brown Construction Paper - Card Stock - Elmer s Glue in the Bottle - Scissors - Cotton Balls - Tempera Paints - Water Cups
Art Supplies Cont.: Pg. 5 - Large Paint Brushes - Paint Trays - Paper Towels - Iridescent Glitter - 9x12 Black Construction Paper Art Project Details: 1. This is a kindergarten project. To save time precut ice cream and cone shapes. Please give yourself time to set up your paint trays with paint and pass out all the materials. Do not pass out paint, water cups and paint brushes until step # Instruct students not to touch anything until you have told them so. 3. Pass out 9x12 black construction paper and ice cream and cone shapes to each child. 4. Have students put their name with a yellow or white crayon on bottom right corner.
Art Project Details: Pg Before gluing the cone the students may use a black crayon to cross hatch for a waffle cone effect. 6. Now have students glue cone shape to black construction paper. 7. Next have them glue the ice cream shape on top of the cone. NOTE: Pass out 6 or 12 cotton balls per student depending on 1 cone project or 4 cone project. 8. Have each student stretch their cotton balls out so they fit on ice cream shape. 9. Students should now use the Elmer s glue and CAREFULLY place a few dots or lines on top of ice cream shape. 10. They now will begin to place the cotton balls on the ice cream shape. 11. Once this is achieved you may pass out paint trays, water cups and paint brushes to those students who are ready to paint.
Art Project Details: Pg Have the students place their art in a place where it can dry. If you have time have a discussion on what they would like to name their ice cream art ex. Stunning Strawberry Swirl or Lip Pucker Lemon etc return later and display these wonderful masterpieces!!! 13. Began your clean up. 14. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME!!! ART MASTERPIECE
