5 Name Date Looking at Multiplication Sets Creating Number Sentences Collect 5 counters and 5 math mats. Place the same number of counters on each mat you use. Write a fact for each set as you put the counters into different groups on the mats. Each set shows one multiplication sentence. The first factor is the number of groups. Each mat represents 1 group. The second factor is the number of counters in each group. The product is the number of counters in all of the groups in the set. When you look at the sets, say the following: group(s) of has a total value of, so x =. Example 1: 2 counters Example 2: 2 counters Think: 1 group of 2 has a total value of 2, so 1 x 2 = 2. Think: 2 groups of 1 have a total value of 2, so 2 x 1 = 2. Each mat represents 1 group. Place the given number of counters on the mats so that all mats have an equal number of counters. Start with one mat and see how many equal groups can be made with the given number of counters. Then, add another mat and try to make more equal groups. Keep adding mats until you can no longer make equal groups with the given number of counters. Write the number sentence for each set of equal groups that you can make on the lines below. You may not need all of the blanks for each problem counters 2. 5 counters 3. 4 counters 4. 1 counter Mastering Math Facts: Multiplication and Division CD Carson-Dellosa

6 Name Looking at Division Sets Date Creating Number Sentences Collect 10 counters and 5 math mats. Place the same number of counters on each mat you use. Write a fact for each set as you put the counters into different groups on the mats. Each set shows one division sentence. The dividend is the number of counters, or units. The divisor is the number of groups. Each mat represents 1 group. The quotient is the number of units in each group. When you look at the sets, say the following: divided into group(s) is units in each set, so =. Example 1: 2 counters Example 2: 2 counters Think: 2 divided into 1 group is 2 units, so 2 1 = 2. Think: 2 divided into 2 groups is 1 unit, so 2 2 = 1. You may not need all of the blanks for each problem counters 2. 4 counters counters 4. 5 counters 5. 3 counters Mastering Math Facts: Multiplication and Division CD Carson-Dellosa 7

7 Name Date Arrays Memorization Strategies Arrays can help you memorize multiplication and division facts. The number of columns is the first factor in a multiplication problem this is the number of sets or groups. The number of rows is the second factor in a multiplication problem this is the number in each set or group. The total number in the array is the product. In a division problem, the total number is the dividend. The number of columns is the divisor, or the number of sets or groups it is divided into. The number in each row is the number in each set, or the quotient. Look at each array and write the multiplication or division number sentence it represents. Draw an X in the blank to tell whether you are writing a multiplication or division sentence for each array. I am writing the multiplication facts division facts Mastering Math Facts: Multiplication and Division CD Carson-Dellosa

8 Name Double It Halve It Date Memorization Strategies Double It You can memorize twice as many multiplication facts by taking a fact you have already memorized and doubling 1 factor. This doubles the product. For example, you already know that 3 x 4 = 12. Double the 4 and the 12 to make a new number sentence, 3 x 8 = 24. Write 5 facts that you need to memorize in the space below. Below each fact, double the second factor and double the product, and write a new number sentence. Say each part of both number sentences aloud as you point to each part of the problem. Say each number sentence aloud 3 times. Halve It You can memorize twice as many division facts by taking a fact you have already memorized and halving the divisor. This doubles the quotient. For example, you already know that 8 4 = 2. Halve the 4 and double the 2 to make a new number sentence, 8 2 = 4. Write 5 facts that you need to memorize in the space below. Below each fact, halve the divisor, double the quotient, and write a new number sentence. Say each part of both number sentences aloud as you point to each part of the problem. Say each number sentence aloud 3 times. Mastering Math Facts: Multiplication and Division CD Carson-Dellosa
