3 Introduction GENERAL INFORMATION SAMPLE PROBLEM The first number in each row tells the number of figures from that row that will appear in the solution. The second number tells how many of the figures in the row are in the same position in the solution as they are in the row. Each solution will have one triangle, one square, and one circle. For more detailed information and a sample problem, see page 28. For answers, see page 30. About Dr. Funster s Visual Mind Benders Visual Mind Benders are fun-to-solve visual puzzles that provide practice in using and developing deductive reasoning skills. Skills developed and utilized within this series of books will improve academic performance and raise test-taking ability for students at all grade levels. Visual Mind Benders utilize right-brain analysis with left-brain memory. The right brain analyzes the patterns while the left brain recalls previously eliminated solutions and sentences represented by the numbers. HELPFUL HINTS 1. You may cut out the figures on page 29 and place them in the solution slots as you try different possibilities. 2. You may find it helpful to cover up the eliminated figures in the first three rows as you try each solution. Do this by placing the matching cut-out shape over each figure as it is eliminated. These are easy to pick up if your trial solution does not check out. 3. At the A level, each problem has one and only one possible solution. 4. Each solution must contain one of each shape, i.e., one triangle, one square, and one circle. There is no such restriction as to pattern. 5. The method explained in the sample solution on page 28 is only one way of attacking Visual Mind Benders problems. Students and teachers will undoubtedly arrive at their own methods of solution. The only restriction is that the solution must correspond with or match the clues at the end of each row. 31 Sample Problem SAMPLE PROBLEM The numbers at the end of Row 4 tell you that two figures from that row must appear in the solution. One of these two will be in the same position in the solution as it is in Row 4. From Rows 1 and 3 you can tell that it could be either the or the, since they are in the same position in these rows as they are in Row 4. FIRST POSSIBILITY If you try the in the first position, then no other triangle can be used. (The first number at the end of Row 1 tells you that only one triangle is used.) If the is in the first position, then none of the other figures in the first position can be used since the figures from Rows 2 and 3 must appear in their same position. This eliminates the and the. (That also means that the cannot be used in the second position because Row 4 uses only one figure in the same position.) The second position must be occupied by either the or the. (They are in the second position in their rows and must, according to the second number at the end of the row, be in that position if they are in the solution.) If you try the in position two, then you cannot use any other square, and the is eliminated. This leaves only the for position three. You now have a possible solution. Check your answer against the number clues at the end of each row. Do you have one triangle in the same position? (Yes.) Do you have one square in the same position? (Yes.) Do you have one circle in the same position? (Yes.) Do you have two figures from Row 4? (Yes.) Is one (and only one) figure from Row 4 in the same position? (Oops No!) This solution does not work. Review your choices above and try some alternatives. SECOND POSSIBILITY Leaving the in position one, try the in position two and the in position three. Checking this answer against the clues given at the ends of the rows, you see that you do have one figure from each of the first three rows in the same position. You do not, however, have two figures from Row 4. This solution does not work either. Try again. THIRD POSSIBILITY Place the in position three. With the in the third position, the possible figures for position one are the and the. You know from your first two tries, however, that the cannot be in position one. This means that the must be there. This leaves only position two open, and it must be filled with a triangle. The only triangle that can go in position two is the white one.
