1 WALK SCILLY WEEKEND THURSDAY 13TH OCTOBER MONDAY 17TH OCTOBER 2016 THURSDAY 13TH OCTOBER: Welcome Ramble, ending at Juliet s Garden, St. Mary s Guide: George Teideman Time: (2 hours) Meet: At the Tourist Information Centre, Porthcressa, St. Mary s. Departing from the Tourist Information Centre, the walk takes in Buzza Hill and a Bronze Age grave entrance, along King Edward s Road to the scenic Peninnis peninsula. The changing light on Peninnis brings out the many unusual shapes of the granite rock formations. The walk then continues via Carn Leh Cove along the coastal path to Old Town, and then through the Lower Moors Nature Trail to join the coastal path at Porthloo, and on up to join the party at Juliet s Garden. Walk Grade: 1) Easy 2) Moderate 3) Hard Max No: 25 Price: 8.50 Dogs on leads welcome. Meet the Guides at Juliet s Garden, St. Mary s for tea and cake Time: Juliet's has grown and firmly established itself as a popular and highly attractive restaurant and bar, boasting breath-taking views across the harbour, and indeed, most of the other islands. Please come and join us for a fun informal gathering hosted by Juliet s Garden. Enjoy complimentary tea and cake whilst meeting the guides and fellow walkers. 2 FRIDAY 14 TH OCTOBER: Wildlife St. Agnes Guide: Will Wagstaff Time: (full day) Meet: St. Agnes Quay at Boat departs from: St. Mary s Quay at Boat returns to: St. Mary s, leaving St. Agnes Quay at 4.45 St. Agnes is the ideal size for a day's visit. During a walk in autumn we can see a wide variety of birds and other wildlife, depending upon the weather. This morning we will explore the western side of the island looking for waders along the beaches and then walking along the sheltered lanes of St. Agnes looking for any recently arrived migrants in the tiny daffodil fields. At this time of year we can see birds from America or Northern Europe depending upon the direction of the wind. During the afternoon we will explore the windswept southern headlands including Wingletang Down looking for some of the more open country birds such as pipits and, if we are lucky, a bunting or two. Feel free to bring a packed lunch. A guided walk looking at the birds, and any other flora and fauna found at that time of year. Max number of people: 20 Price: (Does not include return boat ticket) Wildlife Walk, St. Mary s Guides: Darren Hart & Nikki Banfield, Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust Time: (2 hours) Meet: Tourist Information Centre, Porthcressa, St. Mary s. Join local zoologist and Trust Ranger, Darren Hart, and Scillonian and Trust Communications Officer, Nikki Banfield on a gentle walk around the wild headlands and quieter wetlands of St. Mary s. This circular route will take in Peninnis Head, Lower Moors Nature Trail, Rose Hill, the Well & Glandore Fields before continuing back around the coast past Shark s Pit and Porthmellon; ending back in Hugh Town. Learn about our flora and fauna, landscapes and marine environments whilst walking
3 through the land leased to the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust by the Duchy of Cornwall. Discover the importance of the land management work carried out by the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust and how you can help us to keep Scilly special! This walk on St. Martin s will go some way to give you the answers! Taking in tours of Scilly Flowers and St. Martin s Vineyard, you ll discover how the land is farmed, managed and livelihoods made. Quiz the owners, Zoe Julian and Val Thomas and sample a piece of island life and a glass of Scilly-made wine first hand. Feel free to bring a packed lunch. The Island Bakery at Higher Town will be open, serving homemade rolls and bread, cakes, pizzas and teas and coffees. 4 Join local artist, fireman, water technician, gig coxswain and all-round islander, Chris Potterton to celebrate the colour and contrast of his Bryher home, with a route taking you to see everything! This walk will include sites of historical and geological significance. Max No: 25 Price: 7.50 (Does not include return boat ticket) Dogs on leads welcome. History of Teän Guide: Dr. Katharine Sawyer Time: (2 hours) Meet: 1.45 St. Mary s Quay Teän has a long history of occupation and this walk will take in sites from the prehistoric period to the 20 th Century. We will see Bronze Age burial chambers, the early mediaeval chapel and cemetery and houses from the 17 th and 18 th Centuries. The view from the top of Great Hill is not to be missed! SATURDAY 15 TH OCTOBER: Seaweed Foraging Walk, St. Martin s Guide: Rachel Lambert Time: (2 ¼ hours). 5 A walk across to the exquisite Great Bay and back to enjoy the riches of rock pools and the great ocean herself, which provides an amazing range of edible seaweeds (sea vegetables). Come and discover with forager, wild food guide and author Rachel Lambert as she shares with you how to identify, use and cook with nutritious seaweeds. A packed lunch is advisable. Max number of people: 20 Approx. 2 miles, includes inclines and walking on sand & around rock pools, which can be slippery. Price: (Does not include return boat ticket) St. Agnes Top to Toe Guide: Chas Wood Time: (all day) Meet: The Turks Head, St. Agnes Boat departs from: St. Mary s Quay at Boat returns to: St. Mary s, leaving St Agnes Quay at 4.45 We will walk across the sand bar to Gugh to see Obadiah s Barrow and the Old Man of Gugh, with beautiful views to Samson, the Norrard Rocks, Tresco and the Garrison. We will return to St. Agnes for lunch at the Turk s Head and then walk around the coast, visiting Troytown Farm (for ice cream), Troytown Maze and St. Warna s Well. We will also take in the stunning views to the Western Rocks and the Bishop Rock lighthouse. 6 Boat returns to: St. Mary s, leaving New Grimsby Quay at 4.45 Travelling to Carn Near on a boat, the walk starts at the world famous Abbey Gardens for a full morning guided tour. After a break for lunch the walk takes the coastal path via Pentle Bay and Lizard Point to Old Grimsby, exploring the ruined Blockhouse. Onwards then through Dolphin Town to New Grimsby to catch the boat back to St. Mary s. Max Number of People: Price: to include entrance to the gardens. (Does not include return boat ticket) Dogs on leads welcome. Guided Photography Walk, St. Mary s Guide: Chris Hall Time: (1 ½ hours). Meet: Tourist Information Centre, Porthcressa, St. Mary s There will be help with how best to set up and use your camera. With a few tips and guidance your natural eye and style can show through helping you to produce some really excellent images. Chris will take you to his favourite locations where you can utilize the beautiful light found here on the islands. He will cover many important aspects of landscape and general photography which will improve your abilities to create images in any situation. Boat returns to: St. Mary s, 9.00 from Lower Town Description: A five course dinner incorporating truly fresh local, foraged ingredients will show off the talents of Karma's head chef as well as the qualities of autumnal wilds foraged from the hedgerow and shoreline for this festival, hosted by forager and author Rachel Lambert. Expect your taste buds to be truly wow-ed. Number of people: 30 Cost: (Does not include return boat fare) SUNDAY 16 TH OCTOBER: Signs of Storm Petrels, Shearwaters & Shrews, St. Agnes Guides: Jaclyn Pearson & Lydia Titterton Time: (2 hours). Meet: Turks Head, St. Agnes Boat departs from: St. Mary s, leaving the Quay at Boat returns to: St. Mary s, leaving St Agnes Quay at 2.30, 3.45, or 4.45 Join the Isles of Scilly Seabird Recovery Project team to learn how the project has helped two species of seabird (Manx shearwaters and Storm petrel) and the special Scilly shrew. Manx shearwater chicks departed for South America during September, but some Storm petrel chicks are still fledging now in October. Scilly shrews are with us all year round! We will show you signs of these amazing species, whilst looking for all other species of wildlife en route. Max number of people: 20 Price: 7.50 (Does not include return boat ticket)
8 Sea Bird Special. Guide: Will Wagstaff Time: Meet: Onboard the boat at St Mary s Quay. Please look at the boards in town and on the quay for which boat. Tickets can be bought from the Boatmen s kiosk on St Mary s Quay. This circular cruise will visit many of the small islands and rocks used as roost sites by the sea and shore birds that are on Scilly at this time of year. These can range from herons and egrets to various waders and ducks and the chance of something a little unexpected as the islands are famous for the rare and unusual birds that reach Scilly during October. The exact route will depend upon prevailing conditions but will include some of the small uninhabited islands before returning to St Mary s Quay. Max number of people: 50 Walk Grade: N/A a boat trip. This trip is weather dependant. A decision will be made in the morning as to whether the trip will run. The History of Our Islands Churches Guide: George Teideman. Time: (1 ½ hours) Meet: Tourist Information Centre, Porthcressa, St. Mary s. A gentle stroll around Hugh Town and down to the peaceful Old Town Church. Each church on St. Mary s will be visited and a full description given of the off island churches. Admire the architecture and beautiful stained glass windows and listen to the stories. Max number of people: Price: 8.50
10 MONDAY 17 TH OCTOBER: Ancient St. Mary s Guide: Dr. Katharine Sawyer Time: (3 hours) Meet: Tourist Information Centre, Porthcressa, St. Mary s A walk from Hugh Town along the west coast of St. Mary s taking in a range of historic sites including the unfinished mid-16 th Century fort of Harry s Walls, an 18 th Century kelp pit and two of the best-preserved prehistoric sites in the islands: the Bant s Carn entrance grave and the Halangy Down settlement.
