About 00 yers lter the big whles in the north were lmost exterminted. Tody visitors cn wlk on the old whlers` pths to enjoy the sight from this lst point of lnd before the North Pole. Vegettion At first sight Ytre Norskøy looks brren nd shle-covered. But s you pss the shoreline fntstic crpets of colorful moss cover, clled golden moss tundr, pper. Further up in the lndscpe is solid rock nd stone, nd the vegettion cover is sprse nd dominted by grey moss nd lichens. Some flowering plnts re present, like wood rushes, Svlbrd poppies, nd lrge popultions of pygmy buttercups. Fun The bird cliff on the islnd is occupied by mny thousnd sebirds. The little uk is most common, but other breeding birds include Brünnich s guillemot, Atlntic puffin, blck guillemot nd glucous gull. Severl pirs of Arctic tern, Arctic sku nd sometimes gret sku breed on the lower prt of the islnd. Other breeding birds here re brncle goose, common eider nd purple sndpiper. culturl remins The buril ground t Ytre Norskøy, with 65 grves, is one of the lrgest in Svlbrd. Fifty of the grves were excvted by Dutch rcheologists in 980. Clothes nd textiles from the grves re prt of the Smeerenburg-collection, on exhibit t the Svlbrd Museum in Longyerbyen. The golden moss is like colorful tresure in the grey lndscpe t Ytre Norskøy. The Svlbrd puppy holds its ground. Tip The Atlntic puffin, nicknmed the se prrot, nests in the bird cliff on the northern side of the islnd. From the top re of the mountin it is possible to get good views of the puffins, s well s guillemots, brncle geese nd glucous gulls. The wter temperture my not be impressive but the view is! Vegettion This site offers very contrsting vegettion within few hundred meters, from the brren grvel ner the glcier to the most spectculr flowering medows below the bird cliff. The high diversity of species nd the size of individul plnts mke the site vegettion hotspot. Species like the yellow polr dndelion nd blck erigeron hve restricted distribution t Svlbrd, but re seen in lrge numbers under this bird cliff. These cn be observed from below, without wlking up the slope. Fun The bird cliff bove the shore holds thousnds of sebirds, including Brünnich s guillemot, blck-legged kittiwke, northern fulmr, glucous gull, blck guillemot, little uk, Atlntic puffin nd few rzorbill. A few pirs of Arctic sku breed close to the shore nd brncle nd pink-footed geese breed on the slopes below the cliff. Reindeer lso frequent these slopes. Vegettion The south fcing slope nd rich nutrient supply from the lrge bird colony mkes this prticulry productive vegettion site. Just inside the shoreline re continuous crpets of moss. Lrge diversity of flor cn be found further up the cliff, including severl species of buttercups, sxifrges, nd lrge popultion of the rre lpine rock cress. Fun The most striking feture of Gnålodden is the bird cliff in the chrcteristic Gnålberget mountin. This spectculr cliff is occupied by thousnds of sebirds, dominted by three species; blck-legged kittiwke, Brünnich s guillemot nd northern fulmr. The ice in the fjord is lso good re for finding berded sel nd is frequently visited by polr ber. culturl remins Below the bird cliff is n old trppers` cbin used by Norwegin overwintering hunting nd trpping prties. The cbin is well known becuse of the legendry femle trpper, Wnny Wolstd. She used it s stellite sttion when she overwintered in Hyttevik, just north of Hornsund, in the 930`s. Not fr from the cbin smll homested used by Russin overwintering prties during the 8th century nd wht presumbly is whler`s grve from the 7th century.

Within the rnge of short wlk, severl of the most typicl of Svlbrd vegettion types cn be observed, including sxifrge heth, wetlnd, grsslnd, moss heth, long with exposed ridges of vegettion. Fun The birdlife on this peninsul is reltively rich nd vried nd Ahlstrndhlvøy is n importnt feeding re for fmily groups of brncle geese nd femle common eider. Severl species of wders, including ruddy turnstone, purple sndpiper, snderling nd grey phlrope re lso present in the re. Reindeer re commonly seen grzing on the rich vegettion. culturl remins The cbin, Bmsebu, in Ingebrigtsenbukt, ws built s belug whling sttion nd is the only excellent exmple of belug whling sttion remining in Svlbrd. Next to the cbin is the smll storge plce, Kjeftus, where turned bot forms the roof. Three of the seine bots lie on the bech in Fleur de Lyshmn. The nmes of the bys, beches nd hedlnds of Ahlstrndhlvøy originted from the culturl heritge environment connected with the hunting of belug.

Through thousnds of yers of ccumulted guno from the bird cliff, this re developed thick pet, which is now the bed for very lush plnt-life. The bird cliff is full of life ll through the summer. Over it flies the glucous gull, serching for food. Arctic fox re often seen under the cliff in serch of prey. Vegettion This is one of the very few res t Svlbrd with ptches of pet, nd the vegettion cover is exceptionlly thick nd productive. The combintion of moist nd temperte climte in the fjord nd nutrients from the nerby bird cliff hve creted this biomss hotspot. The turfs of pet moss nd flower-size vrition of turf sxifrge re well worth observing. Fun The bird cliff in Midterhuken is one of the lrgest on the west cost of Spitsbergen nd is dominted by Brünnich s guillemot nd blck-legged kittiwke. This is one of the few plces in Svlbrd where rzorbill nd common guillemot re found. It is lso n importnt re for brncle nd pink-footed goose.
