1 January/February 2015 Alaska Bird News The Alaska Bird Club PFD and Pick. Click. Give. Volume 26, Number 1 Once again, it is that time of year for all good Alaskans to fill out their Permanent Fund Dividend forms. For the past few years, the PFD application has allowed filers to choose from an ever increasing number of excellent charities. The Alaska Bird Club has been lucky to be the recipient of generous contributions in the past. If you have donated in the past, thank you. If you are so inclined, consider adding the Bird Club to your 2015 list of charities to whom you would like to share. Parrot News Around the World Inside this issue: Pick. Click. Give. 1 Parrot News 1 Club Information 2 Fifteen endangered Puerto Rican parrots were released in to the wild on January 21st, 2015, in the Rio Abajo Nature Preserve on the north side of the island. In 1975, these parrots numbered a low of thirteen known birds. Since that time, the Natural Resources Department has worked to increase their numbers. It is thought that 204 parrots are living in the Preserve with another 50 - to 100 living nearby. Estimates suggest that as many as one million Puertor Rican parrots lived on Puerto Rico in pre-colonial times. Loss of habitat to forest clearing for coffee, citrus, and sugar cane contributed to the drastic reduction in numbers. A new toy soon to be on the market in the United Kingodom is Little Live Pets Clever Keet, costing the equivalent of about $91. Clever Keet is the world s smartest bird and will sing, dance, flap, and drive a cart. If a brilliant robo bird isn t your cup of tea, the same company, Character Options, will also offer a range of wild pets. Giant spiders and a tiny puppy are also available. 3 President s Perch by Garry Wallan It is the middle of a dark and cold Winter, but Spring is just around the corner and summer is approaching. Okay, that may be a little optimistic, but there is no reason to let the doldrums keep you from having some fun. Ignore the blue tips of your fingers and ears and immerse yourself in the warm atmosphere of a good old-fashioned do-it-yourself project. Sure, you can shovel a little snow, scrape ice off your windows, poke seeds into garden compost in hopes of a new plant for your garden, but what fun is that? For real fun, for pounds of Parrot Enrichment Fun, you need to pick a project form the Alaska Bird Club How-To page! Commercial toys and play stands may save you time, but they can cost a lot of money. Feel the drive to make something with your own two hands? With just a few common tools at home (or some uncommon tools you can borrow from friends and neighbors), you, too, can explore a rich field of parrot-related projects. For instance, with the wide variety of safe, un-sprayed birch limbs we have available here in Alaska, along with some pieces-parts from one of those bigbox home stores, it is possible to build an outstanding Tree Table (one of the how-to projects). From Odds n Ends (another project) you can take bits and pieces from broken toys and fashion new toys for your parrot masters! Visit our How To page at ain.shtml and get some ideas. If you are so inclined, takes pictures of a new projects, share the instructions, and we ll add it to our collection. Remember: Safety First. Be careful when working with tools, especially those of the power variety. Parrots aren t the only things that bite! An Easy and Painless Way to Donate to the Club Fred Meyer allows their customers who have personal Rewards cards to link their card with a qualifying community group. Sign up for the Community Rewards Program by linking your Fred Meyer Rewards Card to the Alaska Bird Club at You can search for us by our name or by our non-profit number Every time you shop and use your Rewards Card, you help The Alaska Bird Club earn a donation. You still earn Rewards Points, Fuel Points, and Rebates, just as you do today. 3
4 Thank you to any and all who offered a charitable contribution to The Alaska Bird Club through Pick. Click. Give. Your thoughtfulness is appreciated! Birds Available for Adoption See for details Chic Chic Scarlet Macaw Chic Chic is a close to 30-year-old, pretty mellow, scarlet macaw. She has a small, clear vocabulary. Chic Chic "dances" to music with a good beat, and a lot of the time displays rhythm, too! She started plucking her chest at about 10 when her first owners separated her from and then sold her mate. (They thought both were boys at the time.) She is pretty much bald-chested, full-time. She lived with her new scarlet buddy, until his death 9 years ago. If not another macaw buddy, then she primarily prefers male humans, but occasionally feels a female is acceptable. Thought the best placement would be with another buddy macaw, but she might potentially be a pet bird again with the right person, (most likely a man,) and a lot of work. Although she is well cared for, she lives a pretty boring life, as she doesn't play much with toys, chew much, or connect with other non -macaw parrots. For more information about her, contact Runt is a four year old budgie. Sparkley is a six year old cockatiel and Eagle is a 12 year old cockatiel. The have all been together, with Runt and Sparkley born and raised with Eagle. The birds have not been handled in a while, but take treats and like to talk. Eagle knows how to whistle a few tunes and says, Pretty bird. 4
5 Birds Available for Adoption, continued... Relinquisher says: These two beautiful little birds need a new home. I got them at a garage sale from a man who said he'd rather see them dead than in a good home. I've had them both on my finger and one lets me pet her. They are both very human curious and would be easy to hand tame if someone had the time. These two are sweeties and love each other. They must go together. The powder-coated cage comes with the birds and includes a nice play top, but I'd like $200 to cover that. Toots is a 45-year-old yellow naped Amazon.. Relinquishing owner: "We got Perky for my daughter's birthday. She is very sweet and loves to eat the long seed stems. Over the past year my daughter has gotten very busy. We all feel she would be happier with someone that has the time to give her." These female yellow shouldered amazons are between ten and thirteen years old. They are inseperable. They are hand tame and wil step up, though one prefers to sit on your arm or shoulder. They are fully flighted and come with their cage and toys. For more information, call Fred is a 20+ yo albino dove. His owner died a few years ago and the partner didn t want him. He is sweet, quiet, and coos beautifully. He likes short flights once in a awhile, but not far due to age. He comes with a large metal cage on a rolling stand. 5
