1 DICHROIC BOROSILICATE PLATES AND PICTURES Dichroic-flat glass are layers made of flat borosilicate glass which are applied by sputter technology on one side. The composition of the layers (amount of layers, target materials, combination of layers etc.) creates a filmy layer, which gives the glass a coloured look. Depending on the incidence of light and the viewing angle, dichroic-flat glass changes its colour. 1 EB

2 Dichroic-flat glass are layers made of flat borosilicate glass which are applied by sputter technology on one side. The composition of the layers (amount of layers, target materials, combination of layers etc.) creates a filmy layer, which gives the glass a coloured look. Depending on the incidence of light and the viewing angle, dichroic-flat glass changes its colour. The colour layers are highly temperature resistant, if they are not exposed to oxygen. The glass blower has to protect them from oxygen using a layer of transparent glass at moderate temperature. Then the artisan can process the glass with the usual techniques. For beginners in this technique we recommend a video of the American artisan Milon Townsend, which clearly demonstrates the most important techniques. Therefore, each manufacturer has its own system which makes a comparison of the different products difficult. For coatings of "Sandberg Inc." the colours have to be understood as follows: The first name indicates the colour in transmitting light. The name behind the slash indicates the colour after back-reflection. The colour will change into the next colour, as soon as you change your perspective. If dichroic borosilicate glass is melted or otherwise processed with heat, the colour may change its tone. The artist has to detect the intensity of this change by way of trial during processing. The changing depends on the highest temperature and from the time period. To make colour tones reproducible some experience is necessary. The above dichroic-flat glass can be processed by cauterisation. This leads to images, e.g. a dove or a lion. In this form, dichroic-flat glass is called or Pattern.
