Then the 3 rd day we visit East Bali Poverty Project* mountain villagers who have turned poverty into wealth through using bamboo plantation, buildings and craft. (includes lunch/transportation). 3 DAY CRAFT TOUR & WORKSHOP JUL & 1 AUG Day 1 Get to Sukiwati early and other locations with our tour guide Bagus for some great bamboo ideas (and purchases if you so desire). Lunch at a yummy Ubud restaurant of your choice with a quick shop if you are keen. Make a bamboo chair in the afternoon at Chakra s learning centre and see his eco-learning-house set up. Use his handmade bamboo craft knives. Evening entertainment at our Bamboo Village with Chakra and his bamboo musicians (and a dancer!) and yummy Balinese food. Day 2 early start heading to East Bali* to the famous Balinese women weavers. Yet we tour and find bamboo so integrated into this once poverty area, that the high school graduates (once there was no education available) will teach us bamboo basket, rope and other weaving techniques. Day 3, back to Ubud: we visit another famous Ubud craft learning centre and make a delicate bamboo dragonfly and learn the ancient artisan ways. Lunch in Ubud again you choose where. Back to Chakra s to make kitchen utensils so bamboo can be a practical thing in your home when you return. $400 (inc. transportation and Day 2 lunch and evening). Day rate $150 p/person. It is such an amazing project and the villagers can teach us much with the best weaving, building, treatment and plantation learning. This remote village area has been transformed in 15 years from poverty to a thriving community. Health-Education-Sustainable Agriculture practices and Bamboo has been the saving grace. If we are to truly integrate bamboo into our communities theebpp is an invaluable project to visit. This might be the highlight of your Craft or Build workshop! One of the first projects of the Green School everything is bamboo! This facility of houses and common house is used by parents, staff and boarding students of the Green School. Green School will be on vacation when we are there, so we are able to use much of the facilities. Share breakfast (extra cost depending on what you like ranging from $3-$8 per meal) is cooked by our dear friend Ayu who cooks for the Green School students and parents. 7 3 DAY PROGRAM SCHEDULE BALI JULY DAY BUILD TOUR & WORKSHOP JULY DAY 1: "The Amazing Bamboo Tour" which is a spectacular showcase at how Ibuku is at the forefront of building houses in 100% bamboo in the world. Ibuku is rewriting the definition of a bamboo house by creating mansions rising up to five floors combined with a unique architecture, interior design and furniture.. This eye opener 1 day tour is a must for bamboo lovers, people working in green projects, architects, designers, students and for those who are eager to discover the amazing creative use of bamboo. 8am intro s. 9am to 4pm, 2 minutes walk from the Bamboo Village. Lunch-transport provided. 1. Bamboo Factory Tour Tour the biggest bamboo factory in Indonesia, Ibuku where freshly harvested poles are treated to resist termites. This is the place to see all the different bamboo species available in the country. Besides treatment, the factory produces different types of planks, splits, roof shingles, doors and an amazing collection of furniture, all in bamboo. Ibuku is a hall mark name when it comes to designing and building bamboo houses. It has won international awards for its green and unique architecture. Discover the designing process from sketch, concept design to model making. There are over a hundred of models of houses and bridges pinned on the ceiling of their office which in one way silently tells the history of this company and its contribution to keep our planet green. Ibuku built Green School and Green Village. 2. Green Village Tour Set within a river valley landscape along Bali s sacred Ayung River, Green Village is a master-planned community of high end bamboo villas with its distinctive blonde roofs. Entering those big houses is a feast to the eyes. It is a showcase at how black and white bamboo can be combined in all shapes and pattern to create a stunning collection of luxurious floors, walls, ceiling, stairs and railings. Even the roof is an innovative arrangement of bamboo shingles. All the rooms are furnished with exquisite bamboo furniture which perfectly complements the décor. Another must see at this place is the first bamboo swimming pool in the world. See more at 3. Green School Tour Green School is giving its students a relevant, holistic and green education in one of the most amazing environments on the planet. There are several unique landmark bamboo structures in this school. The main building which is called the Heart of School or HOS is one of the biggest and highest bamboo constructions on earth. With its tall bamboo tower, magnificent skylight and endless run of roof rafters, it is just like PAGE 7

8 being in a huge bamboo cathedral. The first green ATM bamboo booth powered with solar energy. The adventurous bamboo classroom in the form of a turtle with a mind boggling maze of arches. The battery house shaped as a dinosaur armadillos back. The primary classroom coming into the form of a Napoleon hat. Finally the icon of the school, the bridge. It is an incredible bamboo masterpiece which has already adorned international architecture magazines. There is also the Begawan Foundation where the endangered Bali Starling birds are bred in captivity. Cows, goats, pigs, rabbits, chicken are raised and the cultivation of organic vegetables help to provide lunch to the school. No wonder Green school won the greenest school on the planet last year. Learn more at 4. Workshop 2 hour basic course in bamboo architectural model making. Make a model building out of bamboo - learn from a Balinese Artisan/Architect. Evening: Socialise together with a shared traditional Balinese meal, healthy cocktails and relaxing music. DAY 2: "Amazing Build Techniques with Bamboo" 1. In the Bamboo Factory learning with and from the builders and architects. This is a rare Charlie and the Chocolate Factory type experience (first group tour and workshops and who knows how often they will open their doors!). We will spend time learning how to make plank laminates. 2. We then go to a Bamboo Mansion being built by ibuku.com near Ubud. You get to help onsite with basic building techniques in July they will be in the walls, ceiling stage of construction - see the vision turn into reality! We are very lucky to do this while in Bali and we just found out in the last week. We go back to the Bamboo Factory to learn to make plank laminates. 3. The evening will be a Barbeque at the Green Village. Stylish way to end the day! The Bello Bamboo Company spent much time in discussion with Ibuku and the Factory Manager to discuss this first of a kind opportunity. We are sure you will be amazed and feel lucky to be the first. 9 DAY 3: "Mountain bamboo buildings made by the best & the Linda Garland VSD method (Vertical Soak Diffusion) with EBPP (East Bali Poverty Project) 1. We rise early, meet EBPP tour guide at 6.45am at Goa Gajah (near Ubud) 2. Bamboo treatment using Vertical Soak diffusion method developed by Linda Garland and the top German bamboo scientist: A small No. of short lengths of bambu tali will be used to demonstrate the treatment process. We will be involved in preparing the treatment solution? The correct proportions of borax and borate (naturally occurring salds) have to be dissolved in hot water at the start of the process. We will view treated poles from a few days ago and compare the difference between treated and untreated bamboo - by cutting a piece from both and seeing the difference. We will clearly see how the molecular structure of the bamboo changes significantly with the treatment. 3. Bamboo building with modern techniques of structural jointing: The Daya Bamboo Centre was designed for in 2008 by Andry Wijoyowidjatnoko, one of Indonesia's top bamboo architects, who was mentored by Linda Garland and recently completed his PhD on bamboo building design & construction in Germany, with sponsorship organised through Linda Garland and the Environmental Bamboo Foundation. Our field team who built the Bamboo Centre will explain in detail all of the activities from the foundation up, with the architectural and construction drawings and photographs. To complete the visit, we will receive an overview of the main bamboo species they plant with the communities, the bamboo collection garden and an outline of the key aspects learnt by the 20 local people who graduated the Bamboo Field School late Also a visit to the very interesting one Ha pilot Guadua Angustifolia plantation started in February 2008 and now with growth that parallels the best Guadua plantations in Columbia, the home of Guadua. If time permits, it is very important for ourgroups to see the real east side of Bali and some of the 15,000 bamboo planted by the communities as part of the community based reforestation of Mount Agung & Mt Abang slopes to improve the environment, conserve soil and water, bring back comprehensive ecosystems and, most important, provide sustainable livelihoods for many of the 3,500 families in the 19 hamlets of this previously totally isolated village where average family income in 1998 was only $50/year with only cassava and corn as subsistence livelihoods. *See a PDF on our Bali-Thailand course page of the EBPP amazing story! Interior Designers are sourcing home-ware items from Bali for their western clients. Learn a new career, hobby or enhance your artisan or craftsperson skills by joining us on tours and practical workshops all about craft. The value increased by percent compared to the $10.47 million in 2011 Bamboo crafts are one of the 17 products from small enterprises and home industries that have successfully penetrated many countries." DAY 1: "Tour - Bali Bamboo Craft & Workshop 1 1. Morning Bamboo Market Tour Bagus (our Tour Guide and rep. of will take us to Bamboo market stalls and outlets to view the diverse craft uses of Bamboo. We will also visit the places where the locals make the craft. Learn from observation, have time to ask and you can even purchase some bamboo sample templates through Bagus and Indostyle who can ship it back to you. Bagus, Tour Guide 2. Lunch at UBUD a beautiful cultural centre of Bali with many choices! 3. Bamboo Craft Workshop 1 At Chakra s our dear bamboo and permaculture colleague. A true Bamboo artisan, musician and builder he will lead us in a practical workshop on how to make a bamboo chair. We will get to use his handmade super tools a selection we at Bello Bamboo stock. 4. EVENING: Special Balinese Bamboo Music and Dance performance with Balinese food at the Bamboo Village. Guests welcome! DAY 2: Craft with the amazing mountain weavers Workshop 2 We are very lucky to get to learn first hand from the mountain weavers and high quality bamboo home industry ideas by visiting the East Bali Poverty Project and its astounding turn around in 15 years of a remote Balinese village. 1. We rise early, meet EBPP tour guide at 6.45am at Goa Gajah (near Ubud) 2. Briefing and overview of the EBPP projects and the importance of developing the high quality bamboo home industries with a section on the goals with the 2 Mt Agung hamlets of Cegi & Pengalusan to initiate community based agro/bamboo/eco tourism for exclusive small & high end groups. 11 3. Walk & Tour. After a walk to the Cegi organic school garden, seeing the first ever women's cow breeding cooperative and some of the environment where bamboo has been planted above the Cegi & Pengalusan community hamlets, we'll then go directly to the Pengalusan community to see all of the 69 families hard at work producing their weaved bamboo products for sale. Bamboo weaving is the daily work at home of the complete community of Pengalusan. The tour guides used to joke that babies came out of Mum's womb weaving bamboo...! 4. We share a Balinese vegetarian rice lunch with the villagers. 5. Then we move to a nearby place where the villager s high school graduates will give bamboo basket, rope and other weaving techniques training to our group. 15 years ago there was no education. It will be an honour to see the high quality education offered by these youth. A small group of the senior kids gave a demonstration at last year's Bali Spirit Festival, resulting in some high quality orders for detailed bamboo boxes for selling jewellery in USA and Canada. DAY 3: UBUD artisans Workshop 3 & 4 1. UBUD We got to a famous Ubud Craft Learning School and learn from their Bamboo Artisan to Make a Bamboo Dragon Fly - WORKSHOP 3. This intricate piece of bamboo gives a sheer pleasure of working with the art and feel of bamboo. The Artisan will share much more about the Balinese Art & Craft techniques and history. Changing our basic consumer choices to one that we can MAKE will help grow a culture of bamboo in our home and community! THAILAND AUG 3 DAY BUILD TOUR & WORKSHOP AUGUST Currently the program is still scheduled to be the same. WHY THAILAND?? Depending on what build projects are going on we will tour various earth-bamboo building locations. We might be able to organise a tour to ChiangMai s famous street of bamboo from craft, to big building items it is a highly recommended place to visit. Our new team member, Joey (In Bello Bellingen), created a Bamboo Ecovillage-Farm near where we will be staying so we may have more tours in store with local knowledge. The key for this Thailand trip is the invaluable sharing we will get from CLC about a very comprehensive treatment process (using natural salts borax like in Bali) and the pre-fab items for building as well as practical know how about using bamboo with earth processes. Our Bello region is about to create an Architect designed Hemp-Bamboo-Eco house in our town. We will come back from Thailand with great knowledge for this. PAGE 11

Day 2 Treatment and Build with Bamboo Tour of treatment centre and explanation of stages of treatment from harvest to poles/items ready for use. Information session from Markus, founder of CLC on the value of using bamboo and earth together (adobe, rammed earth etc...). Sharing of how to create a market need for bamboo and earth when not traditional or part of our culture. Interactive session for all exploring Why the need for alternative building to wood. Practical demonstration of turning bamboo into building materials and furniture (e.g. types and sorting). Session on making bamboo roofing shingles - the creation, joining and long term care. Involvement of groups with staff - hands on practice of basics. Home to Bulin Buri for relaxation and dinner in the resort restaurant. Day 3: Bamboo & Earth Building Workshops Practical learning day: how to use Bamboo with the earth materials: Workshop 1 - Bamboo and Adobe Workshop 2 - Bamboo-Wattle & Daub Workshop 3 - Bamboo and Rammed earth walls and floors Groups finish their practical projects.
