6 Acknowledgments NZPotters would like to thank the following organisations and individuals for their work and support, without which this exhibition would not have been possible: Sponsors: Dish magazine Collis Studios Gordon Harris Wellclay NZPotters Corporate Members Our corporate members are valued for their continuing support The Selector Decopot Ltd and Primo Clays Morris & James, Matakana Ltd Janet Smith for taking on the tough job of selecting while preparing for her son s wedding at her home Ceramic Artists All the potters who submitted work, selected or not. Without you there would be no exhibition. The team at Pataka Thanks to all working behind the scenes designing the invitation, unpacking, setting up, selling and packing up again The Wellclay Team Hard workers Nicola Dench, Meagan Blake, Aimee McLeod, Rebecca Flowerday And thanks to all of the helpers, especially Neil McLeod, who provided time and effort to support the team. About the Selector I have been potting for 35 years. I love the challenge of salt glazing and soda glazing, with the flame taking the salt or soda throughout the kiln glazing the surface of the work. I also like to develop new forms stemming from a functional basis. The challenge of producing a teapot, cups and saucers used every day in our homes. I enjoy tutoring students in the joy of firing with salt or soda firing. I co-ordinated the Diploma of Ceramic Arts course for the Otago Polytechnic in the Waikato for some four years and have tutored and assessed the workshop practice component for this course. I was President of NZ Society of Potters co-ordinating with clubs and individuals all over New Zealand. I have served on the committee and as President of the Waikato Society of Potters. I am President of the Waiclay team, an organisation that has produced several national exhibitions at the Waikato Museum of Art and History. This involves working as a partnership with Waikato Museum s team producing a national ceramic exhibition featuring the elite of master potters in New Zealand. I am part of a small team that organises wood-firing conferences in New Zealand called Woodstoke, and have served on the Creative Communities Grants Assessment Committee in Cambridge. I have received the Arts Waikato Outstanding Service to the Arts Award and been made a Life Member of both the Waikato Society of Potters, and the New Zealand Society of Potters. Janet Smith 14 3

7 Welcome to the NZP tableware exhibition 2017 Trends come and go but the demand for more interesting tableware reflects a new-found respect for artisanal craftsmanship. Presentation of food is so important and the tactility of a handmade plate only adds to a dish. Five years ago, when writing about a restaurant, the crockery would be noticed and perhaps mentioned but now close attention is paid not only to the food but to the potter and designer of the plates. New Zealand Potters biennial tableware exhibition was a staple of the Christchurch ceramic calendar. This year Wellington is hosting the exhibition. New Zealand Potters has secured an award for an article in Dish, a bi-monthly magazine for people who love food. For the recipient, this will be a great opportunity to showcase their work. Another exciting addition to the awards is the Development Award, for a week s professional development residency at Collis studio. Gordon Harris is supporting our merit award with a $200 materials voucher. We would like to thank our sponsors this year for their generous support. I would like to thank the Pataka staff for curating the exhibition, Janet Smith for the difficult task of selector, Aimee for all the work putting the exhibition together and to all the potters who submitted work, while sometimes work doesn t make it through to the final selection, this is the opportunity to learn, re-evaluate and have another go next year. Nicola Dench President New Zealand Potters Inc Collis Studios Collis Studios is the work place of potters Peter & Julie Collis. Located in scenic Birkenhead their Studio and Gallery is a busy place. Peter is well known throughout NZ for his masterful throwing of extreme forms, as well as his extensive knowledge of clay and glazes and his constant experimentation with both. He shares his knowledge and space with wife Julie, also a potter, who works primarily in slip casting, and is usually tutoring a student or intern or two. He is currently working towards a major exhibition in Christchurch in July while at the same time creating bespoke tableware for many of the top NZ restaurants. 2 15

8 Comment on the Selection It has been a great honour to be asked to select our New Zealand Society of Potters National Tableware Exhibition 2017 TABLEWARE What does this mean!! For me it was anything that could be used on the table or kitchen. FUNCTIONAL Work that has a function it is one of the hardest challenges facing a potter, to make pieces that have a difference but the form still remains functional. I received images of entries from all over New Zealand so feel this exhibition reflects what is happening with Tableware. More and more of our chefs and restaurants are seeking out tableware that fits with the unique dishes they are creating. We as potters are providing this work liaising with the chefs and producing some interesting designs for this market. In this exhibition, you will see the traditional work alongside more innovative work.
