2 WORKSHOP WITH JEAN FONTAINE Contact : Françoise Nugier - nugierfrancoise@yahoofr, tel : Jean Fontaine has devoted his time to sculpture since 1990 After gaining a degree in Fine Art in Paris and then at the Ecole de Beaux Arts in Mâcon he became a Professor of Fine Arts He lives and works in the village of Davayé in Burgundy Website : wwwjeanfontainecom Where: Atelier de Alain Pierre, rue Bernard Palissy, Giroussens Number of participants: 10 Preferred level of ability: professionals and experienced amateurs Memory of the body The workshop is intended for sculptors, ceramists, or other artists, whether professional or not, who want to acquire a technical approach to taking an imprint of the body using using plaster, and who want to develop this record of the body in different aesthetic ways As well as creating a mould we will look at the importance of the relationship between the model and the modeller and at the richness of the relationship between the interior and the exterior Taking a cast from a mould is much more than just techincal means of making a stolen copy: it is an exchange, a dialogue depending on the quality of this relationship the sculptor is later able to catch and prolong a moment in time, and the model can feel they have undergone a strong and enriching experience A model will be present during the first two days Day 1 : Introductions, a brief outline of my career and of the use of moulds in my work, preparation of the model and the choice of a pose, setting up and creating a first shell; during the afternoon the creation of the second shell and completion, with time to look at photos at the end of the day Day 2: Creation of further casts in groups of three and a discussion between the models and the modellers, analysis of the experiments, of the experience and of the importance of the psychological environment Day 3: We will use the moulds, casting, creating positives in clay: mixing different techinques for shaping, the installation of internal structures for creating larger works, discussion of problems with drying, transport, firing, assembling The aesthetic aspects of using moulds as a tool

5 demonstration Tests by the participants, which will lead to a proposition of realization within the course time frame Day 2: establishment of a working process for each student Individual work or within small chosen groups Day 3: continuation of work and firing tests with existing means: in gas/electric kilns or built in situ: pit-firing, paper kilns Materials will be those available at the course venue But any personal materials the student wishes to bring to test will be especially welcome, particularly those intended for incorporation in clay compositions
