IEEE Student Leadership Conference 2018 Arduino Coding/Circuit Design Competition Guidelines Contact: NIU IEEE Student Branch Caleb Owen: Sagar Shah:
Introduction: Student Leadership Competitions are a core part of the Student Leadership Conference simply because there is no replacement for actual experience. The Arduino Coding/Circuit Design Competition is designed to provide a challenge for participants to help them hone their leadership, communication, and design skills. Purpose: The purpose of the Arduino Coding/Circuit Design competition is to provide a challenge to participates that includes coding and circuit design. This competition also has a vital communications component that may not be initially obvious to participants. Objective: The Arduino Coding/Circuit Design competition objective is to create/design an autonomous robot that will go from the starting location (S) to the finish location (F) (marked by an RFID card) in the most efficient way, in the least amount of time. The robot will indicate its arrival at the finish location by performing a unique action that clearly identifies that the robot has reached the finish location. Each robot should complete the course within a tenminute period. *Please bring your own device for coding. Setup: will work in teams. These teams will be broken up into two parts (circuit design and coding). The circuit design group will be responsible for designing and building the electrical circuits that drive and control the robot. The coding group will be responsible for writing the code that guides the robot through the course. Each group will by necessity need to communicate with the other group to ensure that the circuit and code work together to produce a functional robot. Each group will be given a standard set of parts for their discretional use. Among these parts is an RFID reader. RFID will be used to identify the finish (F) location. However, there is a second location (the false finish location
(FF)) that also has an RFID card marker. will need to design their robot to correctly identify the finishing location to be successful. The competition will be held from 1:00-4:00pm on Saturday of the event. will have to design and build their robot during this time. Goal: Ideally, the product of each team should be a functioning autonomous robot that begins at the starting location (S) and ends at the finish (F) location and indicates its arrival by performing a prechosen action. The robot should finish the course within a ten-minute period. Judging 1. Teams entered participating in this competition will be judged by industry professionals, graduate students, and professors from the Northern Illinois University. 2. Judges will be given a judging rubric that they are expected to follow when judging. 3. The team with the most points will be awarded first place. Prizes Winner: Arduino Supplies ($100 value), and certificates Runner up: Arduino Supplies ($60 value), and certificates Team members shall share equally in the allocation of awards.
Judging Rubric (Robotic competition) Area Minimal Partial Mastery Documentation - 10% include citations for sources and permissions for non-student produced materials? None of the required documentation present. Some or most required permissions present. ALL required permissions present OR none needed. Complete and Functional - 15% complete the entire project? Robot does not work at all. Robot is incomplete and still needs more work to be fully functional. Robot is complete and performs desired tasks as designed through student created programming. Creativity - 20% demonstrate a high level of creativity throughout the design process? demonstrated Minimal levels of creativity in their design. The robot looks like it was copied off the internet. demonstrated a moderate level of creativity in their design. A few creative solutions were implemented. demonstrated a high level of creativity throughout the entire design process. The robot is unique, wellplanned, and creative.
Understanding - 25% demonstrate a solid the software and hardware used in the project? Can team members adequately answer questions about their design? Student(s) displayed little to no the software and hardware used. When asked about their design, they don t have any how it works. Pre-built scripts are used to control the robot. Student(s) used a drag-and-drop interface to program the robot. Student(s) can explain some basic concepts of how their code/circuits function. Mastery in the choice and use of software to program the robot. Student(s) can answer specific questions about their project and the methods used to control the robot. Student(s) displayed mastery in understanding of the programming language used. Intended Purpose - 30% Did all elements of the project work together to serve the intended purpose? No elements of the design fit the intended purpose of the robot. Robot requires some human intervention after the machine is started. Some elements of the design are unnecessary or do not fit the intended purpose of the robot. Some elements of the design do not work or are missing. Robot performs one or more tasks through student created programming with no human interaction or remote-control input once the machine is started. Entire machine presented a focused and efficient solution for the stated task.
