IEEE-INTERNATIONAL ADVANCED ROBOTICS COMPETITION 2017 THEME: SUSTAINING THE ENVIRONMENT THROUGH REFORESTATION DATE: NOVEMBER 2017 VENUE: UNIERSITI TEKNOLOGI PETRONAS, PERAK, MALAYSIA COMPETITION The International Advanced Robotics Competition has been organized to harness the best of engineering and science students from globally to compete in a friendly and challenging team-based Robotics event. The competition would involve the use of autonomous robots to pick objects that represent trees and place them in appropriate place to mimic the act of tree planting (reforestation). The winners of this competition would be determined based on the maximum scores acquired during the event. 1. CONTEST OUTLINE 1.1 The game will be conducted with one robot from each team simultaneously. 1.2 The game field is divided into three parts which is the starting point, nursery region and reforestation region. 1.3 At the starting point, each robot is set to start moving. 1.4 Each robot has to travel to the nursery region from the starting point to pick up the shuttlecock provided. 1.5 The robot has to travel to the reforestation region then to plant the shuttlecock. 1.6 Points will be given based on the number of shuttlecocks planted according to the arrangement of the poles in five minutes. 1.7 Each pole has its own different value of points. 1.8 The winner will be decided by who has the highest score at the said end of the game. 1
2. TERMS AND DEFINITIONS TERMS Robot Shuttlecock Pole Starting Point Nursery Region Reforestation Region DEFINITIONS The robot that will carry and plant the shuttle in the respective places. The shuttle is to be used in the competition. Product name : - Product quantity : - Abbreviation : Shuttle The place to plant the shuttles. On the field, there are five poles with respective numbers. Point where all the robots start their games. Abbreviation: SP Region where the robots will pick up the shuttles Abbreviation: NR Region where the robots plant the shuttles. Abbreviation: RR 2
3. GAME PROCEDURE Set up 3.1 Each game, a one-minute set up time is allocated to the teams through the signal from the referee. The robot has to be in the HOME BOX (HB) before the set-up time. 3.2 Only three (3) team members and one (1) coach are allowed to participate in the set up. 3.3 Each team shall initiate the set-up time once the signal is given and must stop when the one (1) minute is over. The team members have to prepare their robot in HB once the signal sounds. 3.4 If a team fails to complete their preparation within the given time, they may resume the preparation upon the starting of the game by obtaining permission from the referee. 3.5 The allowed preparation work to be continued is restricted to the adjustment of the robot in the Home Box (HB). The set up must be done by three (3) team members only. Start of the game 3.6 After the set-up time ends, the game shall begin at the signal from the referee. 3.7 Teams that complete their set up after the start of the game need to obtain permission from the referee before started to move their robot. Team members during the game 3.8 No team members are allowed to enter the game field without permission from the referee. 3.9 No team members are allowed to touch their robot except after referee permission during a retry. Handling the shuttle 3.10 During the game, a team may load the shuttle when all the parts of the robot is in the Nursery Region (NR) and permission is given by the referee Only a shuttle needs to be loaded at a time The shuttle needs to be carried to the Reforestation Region for the planting Once the robot successfully planted the shuttle, then it may return to the Nursery Region to load another shuttle The shuttle and planting spot need to be in sequence The shuttles are to be prepared by the organizer If the shuttle that was loaded onto a robot falls on the floor in or outside the game field during the game, that shuttle becomes invalid and can no longer be used. End of the game 3.17 Once a team finishes all the spots, the game end The game shall also end if the game time of five (5) minutes passes The game shall also end if the team uses up all the shuttles given Deciding the winner 3.21 The winner will be decided in the following order of priority: 3.22 The team who finishes all the spot The team with highest score The time will take into consideration to decide winner when both teams have same scores. 3
4. SCORING METHOD 4.1 A team is given the following points for picking and planting the tree on the required spot. PICKING 1. Pick Tree-1 = 1 2. Pick Tree-2 = 1 3. Pick Tree-3 = 1 4. Pick Tree-4 = 1 5. Pick Tree-5 = 2 6 PLANTING 1. Pick Tree-1 = 2 2. Pick Tree-2 = 2 3. Pick Tree-3 = 2 4. Pick Tree-4 = 2 5. Pick Tree-5 = PENALTY 5.1 THREE (3) Trees from No. 1-4 must be planted first before planting Tree If Rule 5.1 is not followed, scores for planting Tree 5 would not be considered. 5.3 Penalty will be given if not meeting the basic safety requirement, refer Section Penalty of 1 point per damage on the nature structure of the game field will be apply to the team. 6. ROBOT 6.1 The robot must be autonomous 6.2 The maximum size of the robot should be within 60cm (W) x 60cm (L) x 90 cm (H). 6.3 There is no restriction on the weight of the robot. 6.4 The DC power source of 12V / 24V / 36V could be employed. 6.5 The total cost of the robot should not exceed USD The Bill of Materials (BOM) should be provided by the team. 7. TEAMS 7.1 One representing team from each university /college/polytechnic from region shall participate in region international advanced robotic competition A team consists of three (3) team members who are students and one supervisor, who all belong to the same university/ college/ polytechnic. 7.3 The three (3) members should be work together and the supervisor allowed to only assist the team members. 7.4 Graduate students are not allowed to participate in this competition. 4
8. SAFETY 8.1 All robots must be built with emergency stop buttons. 8.2 Specifications: it should be a red button to symbolize as emergency stop buttons. 8.3 Placement: the emergency stop buttons should be placed where it is easy to find and activate, so that team members or the referee can stop the robot immediately in an emergency situation. The robots will be check by the referee and organizers to make sure the safety requirements of the robots and prohibit any team that does not meet them from participating. 8.4 Lead acid batteries (including colloidal), power sources that involve flames and/or high temperatures, anything that may contaminate the game field, as well as anything that may cause the robots to break down and/or create a situation that hinders the procession of the competitions are prohibited. 8.5 If the robot has laser feature, laser should be class 2 or less. The laser should be taken full care as not to damage the eyes of anyone in the venue, from the design and practice stages. 8.6 All the robots must be designed and built so as not to pose any danger to anyone including the team, the opposing team and the people in the surrounding. 9. UPDATES 9.1 Guided lines are added to the nursery and reforestation region to ease the pick and plant process. 9.2 A thick guided line is added at the nursery region and a thin guided line added in the reforestation region respectively. 9.3 Barriers are added to prevent robot fall from the game field. 9.4 The highest tree need to be placed lastly at the # position shown in the drawings below. 9.5 Colors on the diagram just for illustration purposes, there will be only black and white on the actual game field. 5
